CHE244: Chapter : 3 : Stoichiometric table and Material Balance

1. The following gas phase reaction is carried out in a plug flow reactor (PFR)

Q+½P 2R

The feed consists of 60 mol % Q and 40 mol % P enters the reactor at 300 K and 12 atm. Given R
is 0.082 dm3.atm/mol.K

i) Calculate the initial feed concentrations of Q and P in units of mol/dm 3

(4 marks)
ii) Identify the limiting reactant
(1 marks)
iii) Construct a complete stoichiometric table to show the relationship between the species
and changes taking place during the reaction. (8 marks)

2. Consider the reaction below for the batch reactor and develop a complete stoichiometric table
to show the relationship between the species and changes taking place during the reaction.
3 NaOH (aq) + EtOH (aq) 3 EtONa (aq) + H 2O (aq)

3. Phospine vapor decomposes at the temperature and pressure of 650oc and 11.4 atm,
respectively. The reaction is to be carried out isothermally in a plug flow reactor (PFR) as
follows:
4PH 3 (g) P 4 (g) + 6H2 (g)

Given R is 0.082 dm3.atm/mol.K

i) Calculate the total entering concentration in mol/dm 3

(2 marks)
ii) Develop the complete stoichiometric table
(4 marks)

4. A hazardous organic liquid chemical A decomposes from A to B ( A B) according to the

following rate equation : -rA = 4.5CA/1 + 1500CA mol/L.min. Determine the volume of CSTR in the
unit of litre for 99.99% conversion. The chemical A enters the reactor at a molar flowrate and
concentration of 10 mol/min and 1.5x10-3 mol/L, repectively. ( 7 marks)
