EXPERIMENT : B2
TITLE : BENDING MOMEN
DURATION : 2 HOURS
PAGE : 1 0F 4

Objective

At the end of the lab session students should be able:

1. Comparing the effect of bending moment on the simple supported beam and cantilever
beam
2. Determine the maximum point of the simple supported beam

1.0 Theory

When the force P acting on the beam, the equation for the displacement of an f at the point
force P acting:-

P L3
f=
3 EI

Where: f – displacement
P – Force
L – Length of beam
E – Modulus of elasticity

bd 3
I=

Where: I – second area of moment

b – Width
d – Thick

3.0 Safety Precautions

i) Make sure the apparatus and its accessory are in good and save condition.
ii) Make sure the workplace environment is clean and tidy.
iii) Use an appropriate safety guideline of equipment handling.
iv) Place the apparatus to its initial.
v) Keep the workplace clean and tidy.
vi) Do a report to the lecturer if any problem occurred.

4.0 Procedures
1. Using a ruler, measure the length of the test bar. Mark the values at the bar.
2. Set up the apparatus experiment as shown in Figure 1.
3. Hang weight hanger at P1 and P2 as shown in Table 1.
4. Load the weight of 10N at P1 and 20N at P2. Record the data at Gauge 1 and Gauge 2 in the
table 1.
5. Repeat the procedure for the other length and record in the Table 1.
6. Repeat all procedures for CASE 2 using the other bar. Refer the Figure 2 and Table 2

6.0 Discussion

1. Calculate the force act at point A and D for simple supported beam.
2. Draw shear force diagram (SFD) and bending moment diagram (BMD) for simple supported
beam.
3. Determine the maximum point of the simple supported beam
4. Compare the results you have obtained from theoretical and practical value.
5. If any differences in values , explain why?

7.0 Conclusion and Recommendation

Make a conclusion about reaction force and bending moment.
