Introduction
With more than 60% of its population under the age of 35, Africa is rapidly becoming the
world's largest youth population, which raises many questions about its future. It is with this
in mind that the YALI network was created. What is it? And how does it work?

I- WHAT IS YALI?

1- context of creation
The Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) was launched by U.S. President Barack Obama as
an iconic effort to invest in the next generation of African leaders.
2- Purpose and Role
-Objective

The objective is to support young African leaders in their efforts to stimulate growth and
prosperity, strengthen democratic governance, and improve peace and security on the
African continent. Initially, it consisted of a series of high-level forums, including the August
2010 Obama Forum with Young African Leaders, the June 2011 Young African Women's
Pioneer Forum, and the June 2012 Innovation and Partnership Summit for Mentoring Young
African Leaders, in addition to the more than two thousand (2000) youth activities that took
place at U.S. Embassies across the African continent.
-ROLE OF YALI
The program offers training in three streams of study: Business and Entrepreneurship, Civic
Leadership and Public Management. The training also aims to provide participants with
cross-cutting leadership skills.
3- YALI Benefits
YALI will provide many outstanding young emerging leaders with access to peer networks,
entrepreneurial support services, and innovative technology solutions. They benefit from
public management in a 4-week residential format with a focus on individual and team
leadership skills, innovation, creative learning and communication.
II- How does it work?

1-The different YALI programs

The Young African Leaders Initiative programs are designed to attract, nurture, and
empower the next generation of exceptional and emerging young African leaders who are
deeply interested in improving business and entrepreneurship, civic leadership, and public
management.
- The program focuses on two themes: the Emerging Leaders program for young African
leaders and the Executive Leadership program for the most experienced group of African
leaders.
- The Emerging Leaders program provides young African leaders with modern leadership
skills. The program is divided into four phases: a five-week face-to-face or online course,
with the remaining 12 weeks consisting of a mentoring program, an internship or public
service, and a reporting period.
- It focuses on the five-week course phase and includes three core courses (Leadership and
Accountability, Ethics, and Current Issues Affecting Africa) and one elective course covering
three topics: Entrepreneurship, Public Policy, and Administration and Civil Society.
Based on the success of these events, YALI has expanded into three main programs: the
Mandela Washington Fellowship, the YALI Network, and the YALI Regional Leadership
Centers.
2- Fellowship Eligibility

YALI application requirements

- Open to teenagers between 18 and 35.
- Applicants must be citizens and residents of Togo, Nigeria, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, The
Gambia, Burkina Faso, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.

- They should be motivated to take on a leadership role and work hard to transform their
countries.

- Are proficient in reading, writing, listening and English.
Conclusion

In conclusion, we can say that YALI is a very beneficial initiative for students from diverse
backgrounds that allows young Africans to be able to flourish, to at least hope for a great
future.
But nevertheless, wouldn't it be better to widen even more the area of acceptability of
students?
