For questions 1-9, choose the best answer (A, B or C). Mark your answers on the separate Answer Sheet. Shamanism Because there is no clear definition of what shamanism is, itis difficult to say how it first arose. Broadly speaking, itis a religious practice evident in tribal societies, in which a shaman interacts with the spiritual world through an altered state of consciousness. He or she usually acts on behalf of another person in order to bring energy into this world or communicate with spirits. A person of status, a shaman is considered to be a sort of priest in his or her tribe. It is believed ‘that caves in South Africa have wall paintings of shamanic practices dating back 25,000 years ago and in Europe over 17,000 years old, but these are open to interpretation. However, the remains of a female shaman found ina tomb in Israel from about 12,000 years ago are considered firm archaeological evidence of shamanistic practices. ‘One of the main reasons that shamanism defies definition is that the idea of a shaman was created by academics and social scientists; so-called shamans do not think of themselves as such, and many object to the term, Itis evident how vague this definition is when one examines the cultures that supposedly practise shamanism. The term was first used by anthropologists to refer to practices of ancient Turks but was soon broadened to describe practices observed in Asia, Africa, and South and Central America, Most scholars are in agreement that, in order to be considered a shaman, the person must be acting to help heal or restore spiritual or physical balance to someone who is ailing. Shamans see themselves as intermediaries between the person in need and the spirits which can solve the problems, and they interact with these spirits by entering enother level of consciousness. Classic shamanism has obviously declined significantly in modern times, since most tribal societies have disappeared. One notable exception is the nomadic Tuvan tribe of Russia, who have managed to preserve their ancient customs due to their lack of contact with modern societies. Interestingly enough, while science advances, some beliefs in more ancient traditions and holistic therapies are being rekindled. Shamanism is an example of this tendency and is becoming popular among some medical doctors and clinical psychologists all over the world. It is being used as a ‘complementary therapy in both physical and emotional disorders by medical practitioners who are being trained in ancient shamanistic techniques, with varying degrees of success. To many, unlike traditional shamanism, modern shamanism means being your own healer by finding your own unique balance. Through every-day practices of meditation, people are trained and encouraged to recognise the root of their ailment, which is often a buried trauma. The essential philosophy of shamanism remains the same: all humans are connected through higher energies and, despite being individuals in the physical world, we are interconnected as part of a larger whole. Through our connection with the universe, we can be healed. 34 Practice Test 3 Practice Test 3 LEVEL C2 What is TRUE according to the 1% paragraph? A. Shamans hold a respected position. 8. Practice Test 3 nd Passage B The impact of text messaging A lot has changed in the world of mobile phones, and most youngsters would have trouble recognising what an old mobile phone was, due to its gigantic size and primitive functions. However, one constant is the ‘text message which, against all predictions, continues to enjoy great popularity. There are positive aspects to this. People can contact each other with far less hassle. You know that the recipient of the message can always ignore your SMS, so you send texts without hesitation, whenever you feel the need. Because of this convenience, texting has led to more frequent communication amongst people, especially the young. It also means that schedules are simple to change, and you can always be on top of the latest developments. However, sociologists complain that communication, though more frequent, has become more superficial. Since an SMS message can only hold 160 characters, not very much is expressed beyond simple facts. Messages are not conducive to deeper and more meaningful conversations, so we talk in short bursts, only getting across what is deemed necessary. Text messages also fail to convey tone, and misunderstandings are common. This can be especially tricky in complicated or romantic relationships, in which understanding the subtext is as important as what is actually said. Due to the convenience and economical aspect of messaging, whether via cell phones or through the Internet, it will continue to grow in popularity. Let's just hope that people still continue having meaningful discussions. 44, According to the 1st paragraph, what is TRUE about text messages? ‘A. In the past, mobile phones were more complex, B.
