For questions 1-9, choose the best answer (A, B or C). Mark your answers on the separate Answer Sheet. The Development of the Spanish Language Many English speakers do not know that, after Mandarin Chinese, Spanish is the most widely spoken native language in the world. Derived from Vulgar Latin, Spanish is classified as a Romance language, brought to the area of Spain by the spread of the Roman Empire. Similar to the other Romance languages (Portuguese, French and Italian, to name the main ones), Spanish began to evolve as a spoken dialect of Vulgar Latin, which had different variations according to region. Although the dialects were different, they were mutually comprehensible for many centuries Eventually, however, communities drifted apart, geographical distances were increased, and dialects developed into languages. This process was spurred on by the collapse of the Roman Empire in the 5® century, when Roman territories were taken over by Germanic tribes. In Latin America, where Spanish is widely used, it is known as Castilian, the name of the dialect it originated from. But in Spain itself, the native language is also increasingly being referred to as Castilian. This ancient dialect can be traced back to the 9th century in north-central Spain, also known as Old Castile. When Spain was conquered by the Moors in 711, the dialect spread southward towards central Spain and Madrid by the 11% century. The Moors were Islamic forces from North Africa which invaded Spain and lived in the region for centuries. The period between 711 and 1492 was completely unique, as Christians, Jews, and Muslims lived together in harmony. Based on records, there was not complete equality, however, s Muslims were the conquerors, and so Jews and Christians were often treated as subservient. The Arabic influence on the Spanish language is obvious, especially in southern parts of the country. Approximately 4,000 words of Arabic origin exist in regional dialects of Spanish, most strongly near the Iberian Peninsula. The linguistic influence of Arabic on the Spanish language is most easily discernible in nouns and names of people and places, but not in verbs, adjectives or adverbs. Many word pairs exist, in which there are two words for one noun, meaning the same thing, one being Spanish and the other Arabic. For example, oil is both dleo and aceite, the first being Spanish and the second having Arabic roots, though pronounced in a Spanish way. Even after Catholic kings freed their lands of the Moors, many loan words were retained, such as ole, which comes from wa'llah. ‘The Spanish language was also influenced by the native languages of the Americas, especially for food items which were introduced into their diet by explorers. Example words are tomato, chocolate, and coyote, words which have also reached the English language. The Spanish language, like all European languages, accepted and incorporated words from other languages, especially as it was the major diplomatic language until the 18th century. More recently, it has borrowed many English words to describe technological phenomena, such as ‘chat’ and ‘blog’. Passage A The Rosetta Stone Originally used in Egypt for religious inscriptions, the Rosetta Stone is a tablet of black granodiorite stone which broke off from a larger stone that was probably about two metres high. Dating back to 196 BC, it is of great archaeological importance because it was the key which allowed us to understand Egyptian hieroglyphics. Hieroglyphic writing ceased to exist after the fourth century AD and, eventually, the ability to interpret this writing system died out as well. ‘The writing on the stone is a decree passed by a group of priests and was written in three languages: hieroglyphics, demotic (an everyday language of the people) and Ancient Greek (the language of the courts). The last of these was the key which allowed 19% century scholars to decipher the corresponding hieroglyphics. Ancient Greek, although no longer spoken, is to date a well-studied language, so the translation into hieraglyphics allowed scholars to decipher the grammar, vocabulary and syntax of Ancient Egyptian writing. The Rosetta Stone came into the hands of Europeans when Napoleon took his army and invaded Egypt in 1798, together with a team of scholars who immediately recognised its importance. In the same year, the British defeated Napoleon's army in the Battle of the Nile and, eventually, all artefacts collected by Napoleon were confiscated by the British. in the year 1802, the Rosetta Stone was taken to the British Museum, which became its permanent home where it is still on display today. 128 Practice Test 7 Two Important Archaeological Discoveries 10. 11. 12. 413.
