SNAKE BITE PREVENTION MEASURES

There are many snakes may be encountered during construction activities at work site. It is general
guidelines to the employees working 11 BRRI pipeline replacement project. It is important to consider
if snakes in the work area and what steps needs to be taken to prevent any type of injury or incident
due to them. There are many occasions that the construction workers come in contact with snake
while at their work that may create a risk to their lives. Obviously not all snakes are venomous, but
there are hazards created by nonvenomous snakes as well.

SAFEGUARDS TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM SNAKES

 Inspect your work area before entering, where the snakes are may suspected to be present.
 Wear personal protective equipments always including long sleeve shirts and pants. Clothing
and PPEs will help to reduce the impact of snake bites.
 Do not use bare hands or leg to bushy areas or the material storage areas that left
unattended for a period of time and where there is a potential for snake might be present.
 In order to avoid bite, leave the snake alone. If the removal is necessary, inform professional to
remove the snake, especially if it is poisonous.
 Do not handle snake yourself, even it is small. Young venomous snakes are just as dangerous
as the adult.
 Never tamper with a seemingly dead snake, as many have the nasty habit of playing dead
when scared or threatened, only to strike out the moment an opportunity arises.
 Keep a torch in your hands at nights; many snakes are active after sunset.
 When encountering a snake at site, inform supervisor and alert others if the snake escaped
from the vicinity.

INCASE OF SNAKE BITE

Snake bites do occur, although rarely and require professional medical treatment with ANTIVENOM.
In the event of a snake bite:

 Do not cut or suck the wound. Cutting or sucking at a snake bite site or applying a too-tight
tourniquet will not work and in fact, may cause further damage.
 Let trained first aider to apply first aid. Keep the victim calm and still.
 If it is safe to do, take picture of the snake and take it with you so it can be positively identified.
 Time is very precious, get the victim immediately to the nearest hospital as soon as possible.
