Q-1. In this assignment you are going to identify an ethical dilemma you have experienced as an
individual in your personal relationship and/social relationships and describe the situation/Incident. You
will then select one ethical theory, to show how it is linked to the one you have experienced. What is the
rating you want to give yourself for handling the situation out of 10? What is the rating you will desire to
give if you agree that an improvement in the score is possible? Give reasons for your answer.

As an individual I have faced many ethical dilemmas in my personal and social life. I would like to
mention about an old situation in my life which was almost 8 years before. When I was studying in 9 th
standard me and friend used to return to home by public transportation bus. One day while walking
from the bus stop to home we noticed a wallet lying on the road. There was no one at that time he
asked me to take the wallet and I took it. When we opened that we got surprised there was 2000rs
inside it. First, I told him that let us try to find put that owner and give it back. It might be someone’s
near to that place because there were many houses nearby. But he wanted to take the cash split it up.
He stared saying some financial problems and his needs. First, I was not ready for it but somehow, he
convinced. Even I also had many needs and financial problem.

But I was kept thinking about the it. I felt very bad because I haven’t taken someone’s money illegally
before. I was in an ethical dilemma, wheatear to take the money or give try to give it back to the owner.
At that time 2000rs was very big amount for us. If we split each person get 1000rs.I had been thinking
about that when we were walking. I also thought about there was some poor families near that road
where we got money. At last I changed my mind and told him that we had to return the money. He was
not ready that time. So, I tried to convince him, but it didn’t go well as I expected. I told him that lets try
to find the owner if we couldn’t then take the money. He didn’t agree on that also. So, I told him that I
would inform his father about it. Because of the fear of his father he agreed. Then returned to the place
where we got the wallet. We went to 3-4 house and asked them if they lost wallet. At last in the 5 or 6 th
house we found put the owner and we verified with the proof that he had said and gave the wallet to
him.

So, I would like to connect it with the Social Contract Theory which states that persons' moral and/or
political obligations are dependent upon a contract or agreement among them to form the society in
which they live and also Utilitarianism, which says that the right thing to do in any situation is whatever
will “do the most good” (that is, produce the best outcomes). As I live in a community, I must be more
ethical towards them. I can give only 6 out of 10 as rating. Because one in a time being, I also changed
my mind and thought about taking that money. At that time being I was not ethical but somehow I
managed and changed my mind. I could have improved this score by not changing my mind and take
decision to return that money in the first only. A person should have ethical values such as honesty,
kindness, compassion, respect, and personal responsibility etc.
Q2. In this assignment you are going to identify an ethical dilemma you have experienced as a
professional in your professional relationships and/ situations (relationships at school, college with
teachers, fellow colleagues or in workplaces, if you have work experience). You will then select one
ethical theory, to show how it is linked to the one you have experienced. What is the rating you want to
give yourself for handling the situation out of 10? What is the rating you will desire to give if you agree
that an improvement in the score is possible? Give reasons for your answer.

As a student I faced many ethical dilemmas. I would like to mention about one when I was in 1 st year of
my degree. I have studied in state owned school till my 2 nd PU. So, my English communication and
reading ability, was very bad. I went to Bangalore for my graduation in BBA. For some days I didn’t
understand what they were speaking in the class and couldn’t communicate with friends from other
states. Then the class test came. I have got least mark in 4 subjects out of 8.I felt very bad about it. If I
know something also I couldn’t covey it to the paper. After some days I got to know that many of my
friends copying in the exams using phones. I also thought of doing the same. But if they catch our
phone, we want to get it back and if start copying every time won’t learn anything also.

I was in dilemma wheatear to copy or not. But in the time of exam I had choose the wrong path. I had
my own justification in that time because most of the students are getting good marks by copying. So, I
took my mobile to the class and copied for the exams. I could do this only for class test not for the
semester exams. I had done this for my 2 years of degree life and at last I felt something bad. But for the
sake of getting mark it had been continued. I stopped it only after graduation.

I can link my dilemma to Kantianism which says the rightness or wrongness of some acts are
independent of the consequences that it produces, and the act may be good or evil in and of itself. I can
give only 2 out of 10 as rating. The two is only for I stopped it after 3 year. I hope hadn’t copied in my
exams. It gave only marks for me. I couldn’t learn much more. I wish I could give my self-rating gout 8
out of 10. I should have managed the issue of getting lower marks by studying harder instead of copying.
I haven’t managed the issue properly.
