RAFALE

From first generation rudimentary flying machines like Westland Wapiti to the fifth generation
fighters like Tejas and Rafale, Indian Air Force in last 75 years has transformed itself
into a potent force having all weather, day and night, standoff offensive and defensive capabilities.
Along with acquisition of latest weapon systems, the evolution of tactics has been a constant
endeavour to make it a formidable force.

C-130

Starting with the vintage Dakota and Packets to the state of the art C-17 and C-130 platforms, the
airlift capabilities of the Indian Air Force has had a pragmatic shift from being primarily tactical to
strategic. Modern transport aircraft not only undertake airlift of men and material, they are also
capable of a variety of combat support operations. The transport fleet flies nearly 70,000 hrs every
year and maintains an impressive safety record.

CHINOOK

IAF helicopters have utilised their versatility to venture to destinations where no one has ever
been. The fleet grew from the piston engines to the turboshaft engines, with recently acquired attack
helicopters. The heavy lift Mi-26 in previous decades and Mi-17 V5 and Chinook now, provide
formidble capability to quickly switch resources from one tactical battle area to another. At the same
time, the Chetak continues to fly with aplomb and remains an aviator's delight.

PC-7 MK-II

In yesteryears HT-2 and HPT-32 were used for basic flying training. Over the years, facilities have
been modernised to prepare ab-initio pilots to fly the state of the art platforms with multi-dimensional
capabilities. The PC-7 MK-II with digital displays and tandem seating transformed the ab-initio
training. Acquisition of Intermediate Jet Trainer Hawk to replace MiG-21 FL and Hunter is a
stepping stone to fighter flying.

ROHINI

Ground based air defence weapon systems and operational philosophy have evolved over time from
point defence to area defence. Indian Air Force has multilayered Air Defence network, which can
detect, intercept and neutralise any aerial threat. The array of acquired and indigenously developed
AD weapon systems make Indian airspace a lethal trap for any intruding aircraft. Planned acquisition
of S-400 system will add airspace denial capability to our AD network.

LIGHTING
Major thrust has been given to upgradation of the airfield infrastructure to keep up with the current
flow of technology and, more importantly, to compliment the all weather day/night ops capability of
modern aircraft with similar ground infrastructure for undertaking missions at high tempo all through
the day. At the same time, many more IAF airfields are being added to 'Joint User' category for regular
civil flights. This will enhance versatility and directly contribute towards national economy.

Knowledge has always been power. The speed of flow of information can be a game changer in any
conflict. IAF foresaw the communication and IT revolution and commissioned AFNET; which is the
backbone of information flow within the service. It provided a major impetus for seamless voice and
data communication between ground to ground and air to ground entities. Today, video
connectivity all over the country, however remote the location of an IAF detachment, is a reality; along
with host of applications on the AFCEL that most air warriors carry in their pocket.

Initially, basic flying training was spread between the Elementary Flying Training School and
Service Flying Training School. The establishment of Air Force Academy led to the entire officers'
training being brought under one umbrella. Airmen Training Institutes have been modernised to keep
pace with technology and intake level of the trainees. For in-service training, there are TETTRA
schools for each type of system, institutes for Professional Military Education (PME) and plethora of
avenues for acquiring civil qualification under project 'Akashdeep'.

1971 WAR

Soon after independence, the fledging and much depleted Air Force was called up to prove its
mettle in Kashmir when mix of Pakistan regulars and irregulars attacked the state. Airlift of Indian
Army troops to Srinagar proved to be a game changer in the valley and to Leh for the Ladakh region.
Since then, the contribution of the air element has had a decisive impact on the outcome of every
operation.

DBO LANDING

In the last 75 years, the IAF has taken its men and machines to their extreme limits and beyond.
The first Indian in space, landing at strategic DBO airfield, the only formation aerobatic team in the
subcontinent and highway landings by transport and fighter aircraft... IAF has achieved many 'firsts'
in its glorious years. Today, IAF fighters fly all across the globe to take part in international exercises.
Direct ferry of the Rafale aircraft from France to India without any stopover, undertaken on
29 Jul 2020, proved the capability of not only the machine but also the magnificent men who fly them.

HADR OPS

Indian Air Force has always been the first respondent in providing disaster relief to far flung areas
and in hostile terrain. IAF has been at the forefront in extracting civilians from conflict zones in
West Asia and Africa. The transport fleet flew 3,700 hrs during Covid pandemic to ferry in civilians
and equipment, and to deliver Covid vaccines to other countries. Through these flights precious
human lives were saved and stature of our nation grew manifold at global level.
