6th October 2021 Statute of Artificers 1563

Factual test tomorrow

Death rate has been reversed, it begins to rise during the increase of epidemics like influenza and
disease.

Pastoral – rearing of livestock

Middle class and upper class – worried about the potential for revolting peasants as they do not
have anyone to answer to due to their poverty and lack of jobs i.e., vagrants.

In 1563, statute of artificers was the first example of central government attempting to recognise
and resolve Tudor problems in society. It is now being funded by the subsidy tax as well now (i.e.,
the people). A government for the people, by the people. It led to the further importance of JP’s
who were expected to enforce this, along with their extreme variety of roles further.

The Statute lasted for the rest of the Tudor period and it got rid of the previous ‘piecemeal’. But it
does place an extreme amount of onus on the JP’s.

It enhanced the importance of apprenticeships and protected the statutes of the skilled workers
(needed within the country). Under the new law, people are not able to enter a skilled trade without
a 7-year apprenticeship.

This statute outlines that everybody should have a master, implementing an aspect of responsibility
for those who are in charge of the ones beneath.
