LSG Requirements
Last updated 8:30 pm August 11, 2011
The following tables list the hardware, software, and other materials needed to set up a lab
to conduct a class of course AN15 ERC 2.0.

Hardware requirements for a full class

Table 1 lists the number of machines, HMCs, and the resources required to conduct the
class for the course class size (8 students)

Note: If you mention only 1 HMC, all the managed systems will be attached to it. If you
specify more than one HMC, each one will be attached to a different managed system.
Note: The physical ethernet adapters requirement could also be satisfied with IVE; the
assumption here is that we are using actual PCIe adapters.

Special HMC configurations:

Special HMC user accounts should be created (enough for the enrollment) with enough
authority to view all aspects and to additionally shutdown and activate the LPARs assigned
to this class. It is suggested that the names be something like: hscroot_01, hscroot_02, and
so on. It is also suggested that the password should be the same as the username.

Hardware requirements for one team lab set (2 students)

A labset is comprised of 2 students sharing three LPARs: two “client” LPARs and one
“server” LPAR. The LPARs are referred to as lpar1 or lpar2, but these names are only
placeholders for whatever LPARs are forming a pair to work as a team; the actual names
will likely be different. The server LPARs should have a naming convention that
distinguishes them from the client LPARs, such as having “srv” as part of the name. If such
a naming convention is not used, the provisioning organization must inform the instructor of
which LPARs were setup as “server” LPARs.
Table 4 and Table 5 list the POWER system configuration needed to prepare a lab set.
When preparing for a class, multiply the items below by the number of lab sets needed for
the class.

Note: The vscsi disk backed by the LUN intended for a client LPAR’s rootvg must be
discovered as hdisk0. The virtual FC accessed disk must be the last disk discovered by the
client LPAR (hdisk5).
To expedite the zoning of LUNs to the defined virtual FC adapters it is suggested that a
standard WWPN format be used. The create client virtual FCs should be updated to follow
a standard WWPN format. Zoning of the LUNs for the virtual FC adapters should follow the
same WWPN format:
The structure of the 16 character WWPN will be:
1 “C”
2-5 System# and class number (such as 3041 for sys3041, 3042 for sys3042.....etc.)

15,16 Team-based number (01, 02, 03, etc.)
It is assumed that the 4 character field in positions 2 through 5 is a combination of the 3
digit managed system identifier and a single digit class number.
For example, if we have an AN42 and an AN14 running on the same managed system
sys324, we would have the following LPAR names:
sys3241_lpar1 sys3241_lpar2 .... etc for the first course provisioned
sys3242_lpar1 sys3242_lpar2 ...etc for the second course provisioned

Note: The virtual slot numbers may be whatever is convenient for the provisioning
organization. The ones shown here are just filled in for convenience. It is suggested that in
a 4 labset class, the lab sets use the following ranges for all virtual storage adapters (both
VSCSI and FC):
- labset1: 20 through 29
- labset2: 30 through 39
- labset3: 40 through 49
- labset4: 50 through 59
All virtual FC adapters will be mapped to fcs0.
If the provisioning organization is not able to setup NPIV virtual FCs, inform the instructor
so that he may adjust the lab exercise.
The matching VIOS virtual server adapter will match the virtual slot number used by the
client.

Table 19 lists the virtual Network Adapters configuration for one class lab set LPARs on the
managed system(s). Duplicate the table if more than one managed system.

Note: The CLP team may change the VLAN IDs to facilitate courses integration, but the
VLAN shared with the vios1 must be en0 on the client LPARs. The VLAN shared with the
vios1 must bridge to the default network that supports remote access.
Note: The Port group MCS value should be set to value to allows at least16 total logical
ports (MCS=2 would work), of which 8 will be used by this class, using two of the four IVE
physical ports. Another class that uses IVE can co-exist on the same server by being
allocated logical ports for the remaining two physical IVE ports.

Hardware and virtualization (VIOS) setup instructions

Use the following information in addition to the normal hardware installation procedures to
set up the lab hardware.
__ 1. Allow remote connection and command execution to the HMC.
__ 2. Define the VIOS per the above requirements
__ 3. Install the specified level of VIOS.
__ 4. Configure the VIOS services according to the above requirements.
__ a. On vios1, define SEA for bridging VLAN traffic to the class network. Example
command:
$ mkvdev -sea ent0 -vadapter ent1 -default ent1 -defaultid 1
(assuming that ent0 = physical Ethernet adapter, ent1 = Virtual Ethernet adapter
bridging the VLAN1
__ b. On vios1, define virtual SCSI support (virtual target devices under each vhost,
mapped to the appropriate backing storage)
__ 5. Configure the managed system to use appropriate MCS values for the IVE prt
groups.

V5.4.0.3
Lab Setup Guide

LSG __ 6. Define the student LPARs per the above requirements. When creating student LPAR
profiles, use a name of “default”.
__ 7. Replace the generated WWPNs for the client LPARs with the standard WWPNs
according to the previous requirements. LUN zoning must match the WWPNs used
by the virtual FC adapters.

Software setup instructions

Use the following information in addition to the normal software installation procedures to
set up the lab software.

Operating system setup instructions

Perform the following steps:
__ 1. Install into the student LPARs the specified level of AIX.
__ a. Ensure that only hdisk0 is in the rootvg.
__ 2. In post install configuration,
__ a. Set the root password to ibmaix.
__ b. Install any additional software not already installed.
__ c. Only one disk (which contains the standard rootvg logical volumes) in the
rootvg should be bootable. Clear the bootable status for all other disks on the
system by running the following command, substituting the appropriate numbers
for all other disks on the system for the # symbol:
# chpv -c hdisk#
__ d. Complete network minimal configuration:
configure en0 with the appropriate class network IP address and mask.
set the initial hostname (and name resolution of the IP)
and define the appropriate IP gateway to allow remote access.
__ e. Customize /etc/hosts as specified.
__ f. Install the ssh and ssl utilities. The suggested levels are:
openssh.base.client 5.2.0.5301 C F Open Secure Shell Commands
openssh.base.server 5.2.0.5301 C F Open Secure Shell Server
openssh.man.en_US 5.2.0.5300 C F Open Secure Shell
openssl.base 0.9.8.1300 C F Open Secure Socket Layer
openssl.man.en_US 0.9.8.1300 C F Open Secure Socket Layer

__ g. Install the lab files

Lab Setup Guide

copy the labfiles tar ball to /tmp (or access via NFS mount from a server)
Extract the tar ball contents (to /home/).
For example:
$ cd /home
$ zcat /tmp/an152labfiles.tar.Z | tar -xvf - | more
$ ls
__ h. Backup the existing inittab, remove the platform_agent entry, and kill the
slp_srvreg process (if it exists):
# cp /etc/inittab /etc/inittab.bak
# rmitab platform_agent
# ps -el | grep slp
# kill <pid of slp_srvreg>

Additional setup instructions for the “server LPARs”

Perform the following steps:
__ 1. gencopy the AIX7 TL0 SP1 base and fix packs (matching what is installed in the
LPARs) into /lpp_source7100-00-01. The space requirements should be
approximately 1.75 GB. It is suggested that this be a separate file system which is
automatically mounted at system restart.
__ 1. gencopy the AIX7 TL0 SP2 fix pack only into /export/AIX_7100-00-02. The space
requirements should be approximately 512 MB. t is suggested that this be a
separate file system which is automatically mounted at system restart.
__ 2. Copy the bos.sysmgt.7.1.0.0.I file from the /lpp_source7100-00-01 directory to the
/usr/sys/inst.images directory.

NIM setup instructions for an additional server (if needed)

No additional server NIM configuration needed; students will configure their “server” LPAR
to act as their NIM server. Skip to the next section.
Perform the following steps (if needed):
__ 1. If not using a specified LPAR while partitioning the class server, allocate a machine
(or LPAR on some non-class server) with enough storage and other resources to
effectively act as a NIM server.
__ 2. Install AIX at the same level as the LPARs.
__ 3. Set root password to ibmaix.

__ 5. Configure the NIM master.
__ 6. Define the specified resources (may need to first gencopy the necessary software
from media into a directory or mount a remote software repository)
__ 7. Define the client machines (all student LPARs).
__ 8. Allocate the resources to the client machine objects.
__ 9. Execute the specified operation for each client machine object.

Verification procedures
Use the following information to verify the installation and configurations of the lab and/or
instructor systems. Login to each student LPAR and:
For the server LPARs:
__ 1. Log in as root with a password of ibmaix.
__ 2. Run setclock.
You should get a date and time displayed. If setclock hangs then the IP address
defined in /etc/hosts is not responding (it may be in invalid timeserver address). If
setclock gives an error that the nameserver is not defined, then the nameserver
entry is missing in /etc/hosts
__ 3. Run oslevel -s and check that the level is 7100-00-01.
__ 4. Validate that the /export/AIX_7100-00-02 directory exists and has contents.
__ 5. Validate that the /lpp_source7100-00-01 directory has contents.
__ 6. Execute exportfs and check that there are no NFS exported filesystems.
On the client LPARs:
__ 1. Ensure that the lab exercises are installed:
# ls -l /home/workshop
__ 4. Check to be sure the man pages are working (for example, by typing # man ls).
__ 5. Execute lspv to validate that there are four virtual disks with hdisk0 associated with
the rootvg.

__ 6. For each disk in the lspv listing, run the command:

# bootinfo -s hdisk#
Ensure that hdisk0 and hdisk1 are large disks (for example: 8 GB), while hdisk2 and
hdisk3 are small disks (for example: 2 GB).
__ 7. Type in the alt_disk_copy command to check for the alt_disk_install filesets (should
get a syntax error, rather than a command not found message).

Instructor information
Provide the instructor the following information:
__ 1. IP addresses and hostnames (HMC, AIX LPARs, VIO servers, etc.) and the
associated login information (user name and password).
__ 2. NIM server access (IP address) and login information (user name and password).
