PROFESSIONAL AREA – ADMINISTRATIVE AND SERVICE AREA (III)

GROUPS OF PROFESSIONS – LEATHER AND SHOE AS WELL AS TEXTILE AND CLOTHING PROFESSIONS

AN INTRODUCTION TO E‐RESOURCE

E‐RESOURCE Leather Industry

ENGLISH

Furrier business and leather‐working are specific professions, a branch of craft and industry manufacturing and repairing products of
leather, plastics and textile materials.

A leatherworker carries out tasks related to manufacturing accessories of leather, plastics, and textile materials. Typical leather products
are the following: briefcases, suitcases, attache cases, rucksacks, handbags and accessories (wallets, men's clutch bags, cases, belts, dog
collars, and leads). During training, a student learns to use specialist machines and equipment. A leatherworker may work in the
following workplaces: industrial plants manufacturing mass‐produced products, service establishments making products strictly
according to customers’ orders with the use of the service establishment’s own materials or materials handed over by a customer as well
as providing repairing and altering services.

A leatherworker may work in a team manufacturing large series of products, and during the implementation of production processes do
activities exactly according to instructions or carry out their own business operations, e.g. leathercraft services. Currently, a lot of small-
and medium‐sized companies are operating in the leathercraft trade.

A furrier makes clothes and accessories of common, semi‐precious, and precious fur skins, but also conserves and repairs finished fur
products. A person educated in this subject creates designs of fur products that may be implemented on request of private customers,
wholesalers, and retailers.

Furrier workplaces are production plants and service establishments making products to customers’ orders with the use of their own
materials or materials handed over by customers, where a product has to be tailored to a customer’s individual preferences.

A furrier may also decide to set up their own business operations and take orders from individual customers, wholesalers, and retailers.
Furthermore, they can find employment in plants for cleaning and renovating leather clothes as well as in leather clothing trade.

The main tasks carried out by a furrier include the following: operating machines, equipment and tools used in the furrier business
taking into account industrial safety and fire protection recommendations, modelling and making forms of fur clothes, choosing and
preparing skins and accessories as well as making furs in garment and service production.

A leather product process technician makes, plans and supervises the production of products made of grain leather and fur skins,
imitation leather, plastics and of textile materials following technological, operation, functional, quality, and aesthetic requirements.
Typical products include accessories (attache cases, rucksacks, bags, wallets, cases, belts, etc.) and products of fur skins (fur coats, hats,
collars, bedspreads, rugs, etc.).
A technician’s main tasks are the following: preparing the technical documentation and process documents of a product, carrying out
a qualitative assessment and deciding on their usefulness for production, choosing materials, machines, equipment and tools for
production tasks, preparing organisational documents, supervising the production process, assessing the quality of products.

Because of a different technical and organisational level, dissimilarity of production, and also the diversity of the products manufactured
in workplaces, a leather product process technician requires many‐sided professional training. A graduate with the speciality of
a leather product process technician may be employed in craftsman’s plants and in production companies manufacturing fur coats and
accessories. A leather product process technician may work in: a service establishment as its owner, a production plant as a master of
the production department, QC technician, technician for standardization and technical progress, modelling technician in the
showroom, technician in the production preparation department.

For a profession of leather product process technician, the following two qualifications are separated: A.11. (furrier) or A.7.
(leatherworker) and A.46. (leather product process technician). One can get a title of leather product process technician by getting
qualification A.7. or A.11., they both are the foundation for qualification A.46. (leather product process technician).

The labour market seeks people with qualifications acquired during vocational training. Workers who would do their job with
commitment and professionalism are needed. Analysis of Internet job offers, carried out based on the Polska Izba Przemysłu Skórzanego
website, http://pips.pl/pl/ogloszenia/, indicates that experts in the leather trade belong to a group of sought‐after workers - qualified
leatherworkers, furriers with a knowledge of traditional and modern methods of production of leather products and furs.

The situation on the labour market of countries of the European Economic Area, i.e. covered by the free movement of workers, can be
observed, for example, via the European Job Mobility Portal [www.eures.europa.eu].

PRESENTATION OF MATERIALS CONTAINED IN THE E‐RESOURCE AND INFORMATION ABOUT HOW TO USE THEM

According to a project’s assumptions, materials prepared for the e‐resource are aimed at showing typical professional situations in the
context of a trade language.

The scope of professional tasks carried out by a leatherworker which is the foundation for a clothing production technician includes the
following

1. preparing the documentation for a leather product for the purposes of an order;
2. operating machines and equipment for manufacturing leather products;
3. manufacturing leather products;
4. making repairs, renovations and alterations of leather products;
5. making calculations of the costs of production and leathercraft services.

and by a furrier,

1. constructing and modelling furs;

2. choosing fur skins and accessories for a furrier product;
3. operating machines and equipment used to manufacture furs;
4. making furs;
5. making repairs, renovations and alterations of furs.

During their carrier, a leather product process technician concentrates on the following

1. choosing raw materials and materials for making leather products;

2. preparing technical documentation and process documents;
3. operating machines and equipment used in the production process;
4. organising and inspecting leather product manufacturing processes.

The scope of these professional tasks is what students will learn in a Polish school preparing for given professions. Innovation in the
Polish vocational school is the introduction of compulsory foreign vocational language lessons in the training process.

Command of a foreign language is more and more important for Polish employers more often start cooperation with foreign companies
from the clothing industry. Also, the employees themselves who at any time can take up employment in the European Union countries
which the opening of labour markets favours are interested in developing their language competences.

Making an effort to meet these expectations, we equip teachers and students of Polish vocational schools with e‐Resources for learning
a foreign vocational language in the following professions: leatherworker, furrier and leather product process technician. We encourage
all to use them!

GRUPY ZAWODÓW – SKÓRZANO‐OBUWNICZE I WŁÓKIENNICZO‐ODZIEŻOWE

WPROWADZENIE DO E‐ZASOBU

i materiałów włókienniczych.
specjalistycznymi maszynami i urządzeniami.
w zakresie napraw i przeróbek.

W obecnych
warunkach w branży kaletniczej funkcjonuje wiele małych i średnich firm.

konserwacją i reperowaniem gotowych wyrobów futerkowych.

hurtowników i handlarzy detalicznych.

z uwzględnieniem zaleceń bhp i ppoż., modelowanie i wykonywanie form odzieży futrzanej, dobieranie i przygotowanie skór i dodatków
oraz wykonywanie wyrobów kuśnierskich w produkcji konfekcyjnej i usługowej.

skóropodobnych, tworzyw sztucznych i materiałów włókienniczych z zachowaniem wymogów technologicznych, eksploatacyjnych,
użytkowych, jakościowych i estetycznych. Do typowych wyrobów zalicza się wyroby galanteryjne (nesesery, plecaki, torby, portfele,
futerały, paski itp.) oraz wyroby ze skór futerkowych (futra, czapki, kołnierze, narzuty, dywaniki itp.).

Główne zadania technika to: wykonywanie dokumentacji technicznej i technologicznej wyrobu, dokonywanie oceny jakościowej

produkcyjnych wytwarzających futra i wyroby i galanteryjne.
technicznego, technik modelarz we wzorcowni, technik w dziale przygotowania produkcji.

Dla zawodu technik technologii wyrobów skórzanych wyodrębniono dwie kwalifikacje: A.11. (kuśnierz) lub A.7. (kaletnik) oraz A.46.
(technik technologii wyrobów skórzanych). Tytuł technika technologii wyrobów skórzanych można uzyskać nabywając kwalifikację A.7.

Rynek pracy poszukuje ludzi z kwalifikacjami nabytymi w toku kształcenia zawodowego. Potrzebni są pracownicy, którzy
z zaangażowaniem i fachowością wykonywaliby swoją pracę. Analiza internetowych ofert pracy, prowadzona w oparciu o portal Polskiej
Izby Przemysłu Skórzanego http://www.pips.pl/pl/ogloszenia/ wskazuje, że fachowcy w branży skórzanej należą do grupy
poszukiwanych pracowników – wykwalifikowanych kaletników, kuśnierzy ze znajomością tradycyjnych i nowoczesnych metod produkcji
wyrobów kaletniczych oraz kuśnierskich.

Sytuację na rynku pracy krajów Europejskiego Obszaru Gospodarczego, czyli objętych swobodnym przepływem pracowników, można
obserwować m.in. poprzez Europejski Portal Mobilności Zawodowej [www.eures.europa.eu].

example, of pigskin and imitation materials. They are fitted with strong locks, catch
fasteners, and trunk corners. Travel bags are adapted for carrying objects during a trip.
They are made, for example, of imitation leather, coated fabrics, leatherette. These bags
have zip fasteners and belong to semi-rigid and soft goods. Attache cases are made of
leather and fabrics. Attache cases may be semi-rigid or soft. Fastened with zip fasteners or
envelope-like locks. Tourist and sports bags are smaller than travel bags. They are used as
hand luggage. Their distinctive feature is a strap replacing a handle. By shortening or
lengthening the strap, they can be carried in hand or hung over shoulder. They are made of
imitation leather, leatherette. Polypropylene grocery bags are intended for carrying food.
They are made of coated and linen fabrics. We can separate two types: with the stiffened
and soft bottom. Briefcases may be semi-rigid or soft. They are made, for example, of
pigskin, cowhide, horsehide, goatskin, sheepskin. They are divided into: school bags,
document cases, office folders, office travel bags. Handbags are products with different
structural and design solutions, sizes and shapes. They have different types of fastenings.
They are intended for storing and carrying small and medium objects while being out. Belts
are divided into men’s, women’s, and children’s ones. Men’s belts are made of leather or
rubber straps. Women’s belts are made of varnished, suede leather. Children’s belts are
often made of fabric. The basic feature of belts is their uncomplicated fastening. Wallets are
personal use articles in the shape of a rectangle or square with inside pockets, used for
keeping notes and documents. Elegant wallets are made of the best quality goatskin,

Techniques of the assembly of leather products.

The material is the contents of internal information in a leathercraft workshop, reminding
about which essential elements of the process of making and assembling leather products
are.

Leather products are made by means of: sewing, welding, fixing fittings.

Sewing is joining the components of a product with the use of hand- or machine‐done
stitches. In leathercraft, manual sewing is used when it is required to join elements
strongly, and this joining cannot be done by machine. For example, handles for suitcases
made of hard leather. Leather products made by means of machine sewing can have edges
cut to the edge, rolled up edges, and edges sewed together and turned inside out after
sewing them together. These edges should be appropriately trimmed so that a finished
product has an aesthetically pleasing look.

Welding is joining components of thermoplastic materials with the use of a welder.

Components cut out of foil of thermoplastics are joined into a finished leather product
using capacitive welding method. For example, make‐up cases, children’s handbags, bags
for clothes, etc.

Fixing fittings is joining the components of a product with the use of rivets or rigid
fasteners. It consists in fastening metal parts on the elements of a product or on a finished
product, e.g. riveting a handle down, riveting a tool bag together, etc.

Ordering products to a leathercra workshop

The scene is set in a leather products warehouse. A conversation of a seller with a leather worker who wants to order products to
his workshop.

-Good afternoon!

-Hello, how can I help you?

-I’m interested in materials I can buy here.

-We have a wide range of grain cowhide, pigskin, lining fabrics, leathercraft fittings. On the other hand, we also have coated
fabrics, leatherette. What are you interested in?

-I’m the owner of a service establishment. I usually provide leathercraft services on my own. Most often, these are repairs of bags,
belts, leather accessories.

-Perhaps you’d be interested in decorative fabrics, camo fabrics and checked fabrics. In our offer, we also have zip fasteners,
leathercraft hardware and others.

-Great. I also need PVC binding tapes and lines.

-Maybe you also need some auxiliary materials used for leather products?

-Can I see these materials?

-Come with me. So here, next to the entrance, you have all fabrics that you can use in leather‐working. Next to them, on the left,
there are stiffening tapes with different thickness. On a shelf next to the threads, we have different containers with fasteners used
in bags. A shelf to the right is full of imitation leather and leather‐like products – artificial ones. The brighest colours are at the top.
Darker colours are at the bottom.
-Great, and what about an order, payment, and delivery?

-You can send an order by e‐mail. After making a wire transfer to our account, we can deliver products to a given address.

-That would be good. I wouldn’t have any problems arranging the materials in transport.

-I’m waiting for your order.

-Thank you very much and have a nice day!

-You too.

moduł 13.2, In our furrier’s workshop we offer different furs and fur goods as well as furrier services. We process fur skins
into hides, furs, jackets, sheepskin coats and fur goods – caps, shawls. The range of fur skins is very wide. To make it
easier to identify them we divide them into types – most often by their origin. Skins from hunting and fur farming, for
example martens, muskrat, polecats, foxes, otters, minks, coypus.Skins from domestic animals, for example sheep, lambs,
karakul sheep, goats, rabbits. Skins from marine animals, for example seals. Skins from birds, for example swans, geese.
Tanned fur skins consist of skin tissue and coat. The coat depends on the skin type and as a result of tanning, colouring
and refining processes it can be very different, it can be: natural – no treatment, sheared – with shortened hair shafts,
depending on the customer’s needs, plucked – with removed guard hair and direction hair by means of plucking, curly in
the form of karakul lamb fur curls or curled on purpose The customer of our furrier’s workshop can choose from skins of
different animals with different properties:coat (captions: colour, lustre, density, height and thickness of the hair, softness
and elasticity),skin tissue (thickness, softness, tensile strength and elongation, chemical composition)properties of skin
fur as a whole.(area, weight, heat insulation, durability). In the workshop we use skins after quality tests for skin defects –
of the coat and skin tissue, which guarantees the high quality of products and services.

Shopping for a furrier’s workshop

A furrier came to a warehouse. He wants to order skins and auxiliary consumables used to manufacture and repair fur
products. He is talking about the conditions of buying, range and properties of skins and materials and their transport to
the shop.

-Good morning!

-Hi, how can I help you?

-I’m interested in the fur skin types I can buy from you.We have a wide range of skins with coat of many animals. The
cheaper and popular, for example of: coypus, rabbits and the more expensive and rare minks, foxes, karakul sheep. We
also have sheepskins and lambskins – velour leathers for sheepskin coats. We also offer auxiliary consumables used to
manufacture and repair fur products. What are you interested in?

-I am an owner of a service outlet, in which I provide furrier’s services. They are most often alterations and repairs of fur
and fur goods.

-Maybe you’d be interested in lower quality skins. They have thick coat and they will be good for fur repairs.

-That’s great. I also need skins with strong hairs.

-Maybe you also need some auxiliary consumables used to sew furs?

-Can I see them?

-Come with me, please. So here by the entrance you have all the textiles that you can use in a fur. Next to them, on the
left, there are strengthening tapes with different thickness. On the near rack we have different packages with fasteners
used in furs. The rack on the right is filled with materials similar to fur – fake furs. The lightest colours are at the top. The
dark colours are at the bottom.

-I see that your materials are of good quality. What about orders, payment and delivery?

-You can send the order by e‐mail. After a transfer to our account we can deliver the goods to the given address.

-It would be good. I wouldn’t have a problem with placing skins in transport.

-I’m waiting for your order.

-Thank you and have a nice day!

-You too.

Choosing leathers for produc on of leather

moduł 48.1, The basic material used in the production of leather products are tanned
leathers. We divide tanned leathers into hard and soft leathers. Because of their properties
hard leathers can be used in production of footwear soles and special bags. Soft skins are
used in the production of clothes, goods and footwear, for example: coats, trousers, purses,
bags and gloves. A good choice of leather for a product is important for the properties the
product will have. Can you imagine walking in trousers made of hard leather?

Laboratory tests of leather and imita on leather

products
The boss of a workshop producing leather and imitation leather products informs the
employees about a new laboratory testing the properties of materials and half‐finished
products.

Ladies and gentlemen,

I have very good news for you. Starting with the next year we are opening a laboratory for
tanned leather testing. We will be doing the tests we need and do tests for other
customers.
To cut laboratory samples we bought a mechanical press and steel blanking dies. Our
laboratory will do tests of the strength properties of materials and half‐finished products.
This will let me offer tensile strength, bending strength, permanent and elastic elongation
tests to our customers. We equipped the laboratory with a tensile testing machine and two
Bally flexometers to do these tests. We have a climate chamber to store the samples.

Regards,

BW

Designing leather products

Film dostępny na portalu epodreczniki.pl
Source: Funmedia, cc0.

moduł 48.2, Designing leather products starts with sketching, which means drawing the
external lines of the template model. After that, drawings are created for particular parts of
the template, e.g. pockets, connection methods, ferrules, straps, etc. Next, a mock-up is
made, which is a product of natural size, but made of replacing materials, such as paper,
cardboard, stiffener. Based on the mock-up, working and documentation templates are
made. Working templates are divided into cutting templates, meant for cutting elements of
the products by hand. They are made of more resistant materials, for example pressboard.
Working assembly templates are used for connecting elements into a finished product – all
the places of the pockets, fasteners, where the patterns are connected, etc. are
marked.Based on the templates, a prototype is made, the first product made of proper
materials. It is used to check the design of the designer and prepare the proper templates.

Designing leather products

The material contains information on the process of designing leather products. It’s an
e‐mail to a customer explaining this process.

Dear John,

I will tell you shortly how the process of designing products looks. If you have any more
questions, please e‐mail me.

Designing leather products starts with sketching which means drawing the external lines
of the template model. After that we make drawings of each part of the template: top,
stiffening and lining. After that we measure each part of the template and mark the bends
and connections between the parts. The design also shows drawings of ferrules (buckles,
fasteners, etc.) and the places where they are fitted. For complex designs also drawings
showing fragments of parts of the template, methods of connecting them and the order of
actions in the process of production of the product template, etc. When designing
products, we need to remember that the top patterns need to be bigger than the patterns
stiffening the product and they must have some allowance for wrapping the edges and
sewing the connections. The lining patterns, if it is separately stiffened with cardboard,
also have to be bigger than the cardboard stiffening and must have space for wrapping the
edges and sticking them on the stiffening. The lining patterns and the product stiffening
patterns should be designed so that they have good dimensions and fit well to the other
parts of the top and the stiff parts of the inside of the product. After that we make
a mock‐up.

If you have questions – I am here.

Regards,
MK

Announcement on the best-made leather product

compe on
The announcement is for the employees who combine elements into finished products.
The best product will become the showpiece of the workshop. The prize will be a bonus
and the product presentation at the Polish leather goods trade show.

Greetings, employees. It is a tradition at our works to organise an annual competition for

the best‐made leather product. I am giving you the details today, as high quality of
manufactured products applies to the whole company. This year’s competition is for
a leather women’s purse.

The most important will be the assessment of the quality of products and half‐finished
products, performed at the works by the quality control employees. The quality control
inspector using, among other things, a pattern set, technical and technological
documentation and the current standards, will perform the final assessment. The
assessment will cover: correctness of assembly, external and internal dimensions. The most
important thing will be product usability and the classification of goods in terms of use and
looks. As the subject of the competition is a women’s purse, so a leathercraft product. In the
assessment of products we can distinguish admissible and inadmissible errors. These apply
both to material and processing errors. However, a competition product must be perfect.
A competition at such a prestigious trade show places our works among the best. After
initial assessment the competition committee will choose the best product. I encourage
you to take part in the competition.
