Week 7: The size and shape of the industry

In class we looked at the Creative Skillset Employment Census from 2015. You
will need to refer this document (it’s on eStudy) for this week’s task.
You will also need to refer to another Creative Skillset report: The Full Picture.
This is also on eStudy.

Task 1 The size and shape of the industry

Using statistical data from the Skillset Employment Census, describe the size
and shape of the Creative Industries in the UK.
You will find this easier if you concentrate on the one specific sub-sector you
would like to work in.
Your write-up should answer the following questions:
 Do you think jobs in your chosen sector or sub-sector are increasing or
decreasing? Why?
They are getting higher because not too many people are too intrested
in being a camera person.
 Where are jobs concentrated geographically?
A cameraman can work in a variety of settings, including in television studios,
production studios, sports venues or at private events such as weddings. They may
also work on location at remote destinations for films, music videos, documentaries,
commercials, short films or advertisements for the Web.
 What proportion of freelancers are there in this sub-sector?
Data on the total number of employed and self-employed photographers, audio-
visual & broadcasting equipment operators in the United Kingdom (UK) from 2011 to
2020 shows that as of 2020 there were 88 thousand photographers, audio-visual &
broadcasting equipment operators in employment in the United Kingdom.
 From a personal perspective, are there any equality and diversity
challenges presented by this sub-secton
Yes there are a few

Task 2 Skills gaps
Now look at The Full Picture. This is a report based on employers’ opinions of
where the skills gaps are in the TV industry – basically, where there are jobs
available but not enough people with the right skills or experience.
Again, you should choose just one sector in the report to focus on:
 News / current affairs
 Factual / factual entertainment / entertainment
 Drama / comedy
 Post production
 Childrens’ entertainment
 High end TV drama
Find the section where the reports describes the skills shortages in your chosen
area of TV production and answer the following question:
 What are the skills gaps in my chosen area of production?
Some of the main shortages in these pre prodution areas are editing
assistances as people don’t have too much real word expireances and as
the indestry is getting more advances there more to learn which can make
it more differcalt.

It’s worth noting that there’s a list of companies who contributed to The Full
Picture at the back of the report. Do any of these have a local/regional
presence? Could you approach them for work experience?

Task 3 Conclusion
Use all the information above to write a conclusion to your Professional
Practice studies so far. Things you might want to consider:
 Whether you would go to university, an apprenticeship or work your
way up
 Which skills it would be useful to gain, given the skills gaps in your
chosen sector
 What sort of working pattern you would be most likely to follow
 Where you could/should go, geographically, to further your career
 Whether or not your research has confirmed or altered your original
plans
I feel like an aprentership would work the best as you get your education
payed for while getting a real life expireance helping you to get picked for your
future employers. From these skill gaps I would need to learn real life skills to
help me be able to edit proply and deliver whats needed. The working pattern I
would want is5 days a week most likely as I love to work and eger to learn
more. I should keep working up the career ladder till I get to an amazing
comapney like bbc or some cool TV shows that I love or that is really popular at
the moment. My reasearch has helped me find out that the best way forward
would be an aprentership for a media company.
