Harmony of Ideology in Movie Fast and Furious 6

Introduction

Fast & Furious 6 is a film about a professional criminal gang led by Dominic Toretto,
who is offered amnesty for their crimes by US Diplomatic Security Service agent Luke
Hobbs, in exchange for helping him take down a skilled mercenary organization led
by Owen Shaw. One of its members is Toretto's ex-girlfriend Letty Ortiz.

Fast and Furious 6 film presents several ideologies. Gunawan Setiardjo said that
ideology is a set of basic ideas about humans and all realities that are used as
guidelines and ideals of life. There are 4 ideologies in this movie, those are feminism,
liberalism, multiculturalism and hedonism. This ideology is the life guide for the
characters in Fast and Furious 6. This essay is written with the aim of knowing what
and how ideologies are used in the movie.

Content

a) Feminism

Feminism comes from the word "femina" which means having a feminine nature. A
Theoretical Review” by Suwastini, describes a general definition of feminism as “the
belief that women, purely and simply because they are women, are treated
inequitably with in a society which is organized to prioritize male viewpoints and
concerns”. In addition, there is also another opinion expressed by Weedon, feminism
is an understanding, study, and social movement that aims to change the
subordinate status of women in patriarchal society or that prioritizes the male
perspective.

Dialogue from movie :

32:40 -- 32:50 --> LETTY: Yeah. That's the guy I shot.

33:30 -- 33:50 --> Letty : Klaus, aren't you team muscle? Don't make me go over
there and make you team pussy.
In the first dialogue Letty is asked about Dom and he says he has shot the man. The
second dialogue Letty have a small fight with Klaus because Klaus thinks he is a
traitor. In these two dialogues, it is clearly seen that Letty has the same position as
men. He uses a gun and he fights. He even wanted to fight with Klaus. Klaus is the
guy from the muscle team who has a big build.

Comment : This film tells about how feminism is, how we can defend ourselves as a
woman. We are not portrayed as weak humans. In feminism ideology, women are
equal to men. If this ideology develops further, we may achieve gender equality. The
world will be better for women.

b) Liberalism

John Locke argues that freedom which is the basic value of liberalism is understood
as the absence of external intervention in individual activities. Freedom is a private
property right. Therefore, the government is limited (at least) to the lives of its
citizens.

Hobbs : How's the life of the retired international criminal?

Toretto : I like it here. It's quiet. Nice weather, and no extradition.

Dom says no extradition. This means that the government does not interfere with
the privacy of citizens. The government let the criminals live there without any rules.

Comment : In my opinion, ideological liberalism is too free. I don't like strict

countries like China or North Korea, but living without rules or only limited rules can
lead us to the worst environment. Crime can happen anywhere and anytime.

c) Multiculturalism

Multiculturalism comes from the words multi (plural) and cultural (about
culture),multiculturalism is an ideology that recognizes and glorifies differences. The
differences in question are individual differences or cultural differences, such as
differences in values, systems, culture, habits, and politics. Multiculturalism includes
an understanding, appreciation and assessment of one's culture, as well as a respect
and curiosity about other people's ethnic cultures (Lawrence A Blum, 2007)

34:20 -- 34:50 --> Rome : Mmm-hmm. Yeah, right. This is crazy, man.

Tej : What are you talking about now?

Rome : I'm sitting here, looking at these images. It's like we're hunting our evil twins.
Look at this black dude, right here, he's handsome, Clearly, that's me. We got a white
Hobbs. This is Han. Tej, it's an African in a beanie. That's like your Mini-Me, man.
(LAUGHS). And Brian! When did you do this photo shoot? I'm just playing, man. You
know you're the prettiest blonde around here.

Roma explains how he saw the enemy from the pictures. He shows that the enemy
team is just like them, multiculturalism. There was a black man, an Asian man, a
white man, blonde hair and black hair. They come from different ethnicities of
course.

Comment : multiculturalism is a great ideology. I've always been amazed by the

differences. Differences make us tolerant and respectful of each other. Without this
difference, life will only be monotonous and boring

d) Hedonism

According to Collins Gem (1993: 97) the notion of hedonism is a doctrine which
states that pleasure is the most important thing in life. In other words, hedonism is
an understanding held by people who seek the pleasures of life solely.

08:00 -- 08:10 --> Hobbs : This is what 100 million buys?

Hobbs asks Dom if this is how he spends his 100 million dollars. Dom got the money
after stealing a machine from the previous episode. Then he bought a nice house
with a beautiful view in Spain. He spent 100 million dollars on the house, beer and
barbeque.

Comment: In the ideology of hedonism, people tend to be selfish. In addition, they

are also consumptive, as is currently done by Dom. He wasted a lot of money on
unnecessary things like luxury cars and houses. It is better for him to invest and learn
to manage finances.

Conclusion

The existence of ideology makes humans have a way of life. Of course, every
ideology has advantages and disadvantages. Often in everyday life we find many
ideologies that live in a society. Like in the movie Fast and Forious 6, ideologies meet
in society so that it becomes a beautiful harmony.
