COMPARISION OF TWO RETAIL


BUSINESS IN COVID TIMES

Introduction
The retail business that I have chosen are V-
Mart and D-Mart. V-mart is an online shopping
of various branded clothes. D-Mart is a
supermarket which has household items from
vegetables to cleaning items. It is easier to
compare two retail business when they are
involved different retail aspects.
V-MART
It is an online shopping retail business started
by Lalit Agarwal in 2002. He focused on the
concept of affordable fashion. They have opened
more than 100 stores in 91 cities and have an
website where online shopping can be done.
D-MART
It is a super market where any household items
can be bought at market value or less. The D
stands for Damani. The person who started this
market was Radhakishan Damani founded in 2002.
They offer items at less than market value and
which promotes functionality and cheap but quality
items.
BEFORE COVID TIMES
V-MART
Before covid and the lock down V-mart had a
daily monthly (online) of above 1 crores. They had
many policies which promoted of buying online.
Here is one example Free delivery for people who
purchases over Rs: 1000 and for the people who
purchases less than Rs: 1000 will have delivery
charges of Rs: 49. These policies promoted more
sales and attracted more customers to the website.
They promoted online selling in many ways. They
had a policy where every month you will have
product combos or have discounts in many
different products. They hire locals to improve job
employment and give a mean of lively hood for
them. They help in employment of the locals rather
than professional.

D-MART
Before covid and lock down the outlets which are
over 220 in all Indian states and major cities gave
a total profit Rs: 114,000 in 2019. They have fresh
produce like vegetables, fruits and dairy products.
The fruit and vegetable are replaced twice a day to
maintain freshness of the produce and attract
customers with its cheap, quality, and organic
produce. The old produce is either bio composted
or used as manure in their fields or sent to the
farmers to be used as manure from who they buy
from. They hire locals to improve job employment
and give a mean of lively hood for them. They
gave up dumping waste and help farmers with the
of bio-compost.

DURING LOCK DOWN


V-MART
During the lock down this online shopping retail
had suffered losses of more than twenty crores.
Not only did they suffer from loss of sale but
their stock prices had also fell during lockdown.
They were not prepared for the lock down which
prevented business. They also had a lot of unsold
stock in their outlets and many ware houses which
were either thrown away or given to the customers
less than their original price. In this period there
were lot of orders but the delivery was not done
because of travel restrictions during the period.
There we only limited stock in home wear which
was sold out in four days. The main point is that
they were unable to deliver the product which cost
the a lot of money and refund some it to. They
lost money because they could not deliver the
product. If they could have given the product to
the customer there would not have been no
wastage of product. Due to no performance the
stock price had been lowered.
D-MART
During the covid lock down period this household
super market suffered a loss of forty crores. Not
only did they suffer from non – sales but also the
stock prices also had crashed because of covid.
They were not prepared for covid lock downs. The
sales were halted so much so that all super
markets had to dump not only fruits, vegetables
and dairy product but also the drinks they had,
chips, etc. This wastage alone had come up to
twenty five crores. They did not have home
delivery because they wanted customers to pick
what they wanted and see the quality themselves.
When the restrictions eased they found it difficult
to keep up with customers coming to buy their
produce. The fresh produce was wasted, the farmers
they supported by buying produce were let down.
They money which was present had stopped due to
the reasons. Due to no performance the stock price
had been lowered.

AFTERMATH
V-MART
After the first lock down in 2020 ended V-Mart
made many changes to the system of delivery
system in their outlets. The one of the many
changes is to make sure that they could do
deliveries during lock down. The permission was
given to all the outlets and personnel were trained
to make sure covid did not spread. The personnel
were to follow the rules the government had placed
and the personnel had to follow that and the
companies rules. The excess stock they had over
during the lock down was given with different
combination or gave the product for less 50 % less
than their original price to increase sales. During
the second lock down the sales dropped but not to
the level of the first. The delivery will be free for
all the money brackets. The sales turnover was
more than what they thought in the aftermath.
There some strategies in planning said the owner of
V-Mart. The stock prices has also increased in the
last few days to prove that their strategies had
worked. More strategies to work during covid and
lock down. These strategies improved performance .
These performances increased the in turn of cash.

D-MART
After the first lock down in 2020 there were many
changes that had occurred in this particular market.
One of the many changes done by them were to
make sure that all the employees were gloves,
mask, and face shields. Then they received
permission for all their outlets to be open till a
certain point of time during upcoming lock downs.
The government put special rules if they are going
to be open during lock downs. After carefully
analysis and to make sure they do not go on a
loss again they sold many vegetables, fruits and
dairy products for half their original price but also
paid the farmers in full when buying produce from
them. The plans were very difficult to implement
and took a lot of time to process. The strategies
proved to be good since the stock prices have
gone up and people bought produce from them
during the second lock down. More plans to work
during covid and lock down. These plan improved
performance . These performances increased the
sales and customers in lock down.
