1. For each of the following substances, calculate the density in a convenient unit. Using
the table below, identify the substance.
a) A volume of 0.50 m 3 of a substance has a mass of 6.3 x 102 kg.
630 kg/0.5 m^3
1260 kg/m^3
Glycerine
2. A mining engineer has a mineral sample that looks like pure gold. The sample is found to
have a mass of 4.0 x 102 kg and a volume of 0.025 m3. Determine the density of the
sample and use it to decide whether the sample is pure gold.
16000 kg / m^3
VD = VM/V
Cancel out:
VD = M
V = M/D
4. A rectangular solid brass plate is 8.0 cm long, 6.0 cm wide, and 1.5 cm
thick. a) Calculate the volume of the plate in cubic cm.
V = LWH
8*6*1.5 = 72
72 cm^3
b) Calculate the plate’s mass in grams and kilograms.
72 cm^3 x 8500 g/l = 612 grams
5. One winter it was estimated that one million kilograms of ice had formed on a small
lake. Calculate the volume of this mass of ice to two significant figures.
6. Use the kinetic molecular theory of matter to explain how solid wax can turn into liquid
wax and then into a gas.
As the wax gets hotter, its molecules vibrate faster. Eventually, they overcome the force
keeping them in a coherent shape and turn into a liquid. As they get even more
energetic, the molecules overcome their mutual attraction and fly off into the air in the
container.
