2.1.3 Hardware Installation Steps

Please follow the steps mentioned below to install the hardware of WL-API330-039:

The WL-API330-039 requires a Power over Ethernet (PoE) connection or 12V DC Power Supply.

If your Ceiling or Wall socket does not already have AC Power, then you must insert an

Ethernet cable into Ceiling or Wall, and connect one end of the cable to a port on your

PoE switch.

The following steps describe how to install the WL-API330-039 on the Ceiling or Wall:

Step 1
Position the Mounting Bracket in the desired location. Use the screw and anchors in the mounting kit to secure the
Bracket into position.

10
Machpower - User Manual
WL-API330-039 IEEE802.11bgn Ceiling/In-Wall AP

The WL-API330-039 can also act as a central connection point for any device (client) that has an 802.11n/g wireless
network interface or Ethernet port and is within range. Wireless clients must use the same SSID (wireless network name)
and channel as the WL-API330-039 in order to establish a wireless connection. If wireless security is enabled, the client
will need to enter a password.

Wireless Installation Considerations

The Mach Power WL-API330-039 In-Wall Access Point lets you access your network using a wireless connection from
virtually anywhere within the operating range of your wireless network. Keep in mind that the number, thickness and
location of walls, ceilings, or other objects that the wireless signals must pass through, may limit the range. Typical
ranges vary depending on the types of materials and background RF (radio frequency) noise in your home or business.
The key to maximizing wireless range is to follow these basic guidelines:

1. Keep the number of walls and ceilings between the Mach Power access point and other network devices to a minimum.
Each wall or ceiling can reduce your adapter’s range from 3-90 feet (1-30 meters). Position your devices so that
the number of walls or ceilings is minimized.

2. Be aware of the direct line between network devices. A wall that is 1.5 feet thick (.5 meters), at a 45-degree
angle appears to be almost 3 feet (1 meter) thick. At a 2-degree angle it looks over 42 feet (14 meters) thick!
Position devices so that the signal will travel straight through a wall or ceiling (instead of at an angle) for better
reception.

3. Building materials make a difference. A solid metal door or aluminum studs may have a negative effect on
range. Try to position access points, wireless access points, and computers so that the signal passes through
drywall or open doorways. Materials and objects such as glass, steel, metal, walls with insulation, water (fish
tanks), mirrors, file cabinets, brick, and concrete will degrade your wireless signal.

4. Keep your product away (at least 3-6 feet or 1-2 meters) from electrical devices or appliances that generate RF
noise.

5. If you are using 2.4 GHz cordless phones or X-10 (wireless products such as ceiling fans, lights, and home
security systems), your wireless connection may degrade dramatically or drop completely. Make sure your
2.4 GHz phone base is as far away from your wireless devices as possible. The base transmits a signal even if
the phone is not in use.

control.
! MCS: This parameter represents transmission rate. By default (Auto) the fastest possible transmission rate will be
selected. You have the option of selecting the speed if necessary.
! Short GI: Select Enable or Disable. Enabling a short guard interval can increase throughput. However, be aware
that it can also increase the error rate in some installations due to increased sensitivity to radio-frequency
installations.
! Aggregation: By default, it's “Enable”. To “Disable” to deactivated Aggregation.
Increase efficiency by aggregating multiple packets of application data into a single transmission frame. In this way,
802.11n networks can send multiple data packets with the fixed overhead cost of just a single frame.
! Aggregation Frames: The Aggregation Frames is in the range of 2~64, default is 32. It determines the number of
frames combined on the new larger frame.

3.2.2 Wireless Advanced Setup

To achieve optimal wireless performance, it is necessary to tweak advance setting per requirements properly, not
necessary higher the better or lower.

The administrator can change the RTS threshold and fragmentation threshold settings for the system. Please click on
Wireless -> Advanced Setup and follow the below setting.

! Slot Time : This setting is used to specify an amount of time the AP will wait after a collision before retransmitting a
packet. Reducing the slot time decreases the overall back-off, which will increase throughput.
! ACK Timeout : To effectively optimize throughput over long distance links, enter a value for Acknowledgement time
Out from 1 to 372 microseconds in the 2.4 GHz in the field provided.
! RSSI Threshold : RSSI Threshold is in the range of -128~127.The default value is 24.

RSSI is defined as Received Signal Strength Indication, when the received signal strength from peer is below this
threshold, the peer will be consider as disconnected. Set the threshold higher will make roaming happen earlier, set
lower will allow weak signal peer to connect. In normal situation, the longer distance the lower signal strength will be
sensed between peers people could consider to lower RSSI threshold to have bigger coverage from the AP or AP
client perspective. If it doesn’t work well then people could consider to jack up RSSI threshold to have stable smaller
coverage and leave AP clients in longer distance to associate with closer AP.

! Beacon Interval : Beacon Interval is in the range of 1~5000 and set in unit of millisecond. The default value is 100
msec.

Access Point (AP) in IEEE 802.11 will send out a special approximated 50-byte frame, called “Beacon”. Beacon is
broadcast to all the stations, provides the basic information of AP such as SSID, channel, encryption keys, signal
strength, time stamp, support data rate.

All the radio stations received beacon recognizes the existence of such AP, and may proceed next actions if the
information from AP matches the requirement. Beacon is sent on a periodic basis, the time interval can be adjusted.

By increasing the beacon interval, you can reduce the number of beacons and associated overhead, but that will
likely delay the association and roaming process because stations scanning for available access points may miss the
beacons. You can decrease the beacon interval, which increases the rate of beacons. This will make the association

19
Machpower - User Manual
WL-API330-039 IEEE802.11bgn Ceiling/In-Wall AP

and roaming process very responsive; however, the network will incur additional overhead and throughput will go
down.

! DTIM Interval : The DTIM interval is in the range of 1~15. The default is 15.

DTIM is defined as Delivery Traffic Indication Message. It is used to notify the wireless stations, which support power
saving mode, when to wake up to receive multicast frame. DTIM is necessary and critical in wireless environment as
a mechanism to fulfill power-saving synchronization.

A DTIM interval is a count of the number of beacon frames that must occur before the access point sends the
buffered multicast frames. For instance, if DTIM Interval is set to 3, then the Wi-Fi clients will expect to receive a
multicast frame after receiving three Beacon frame. The higher DTIM interval will help power saving and possibly
decrease wireless throughput in multicast applications.

! RTS Threshold : RTS Threshold is in the range of 1~2346 byte. The default is 2346 byte.

The main purpose of enabling RTS by changing RTS threshold is to reduce possible collisions due to hidden wireless
clients. RTS in AP will be enabled automatically if the packet size is larger than the Threshold value. By default, RTS
is disabled in a normal environment supports non-jumbo frames.

! Short Preamble : By default, it’s “Enable”. To Disable is to use Long 128-bit Preamble Synchronization field.

The preamble is used to signal "here is a train of data coming" to the receiver. The short preamble provides 72-bit
Synchronization field to improve WLAN transmission efficiency with less overhead.

! IGMP Snooping: Select Enable or Disable. Internet Group Management Protocol allows the AP to recognize IGMP
queries and reports sent between routers and an IGMP host (wireless STA). When IGMP snooping is enabled, the
AP will forward multicast packets to an IGMP host based on IGMP messages passing through the AP.
! Greenfield: Enable this option to reduce interference from other wireless networks in your area. If the channel width
is operating at 40MHz and there is another wireless network’s channel overlapping and causing interference, the
AP will automatically change to 20MHz.

! WMM: Select whether to Enable or Disable the WMM functionality of the access point.
# AC Type: A different type of data is associated with each queue. The queue and associated priorities and
parameters for transmission are as follows:
% (Best Effort, BE): Medium priority queue, medium throughput and delay. Most traditional IP data is
sent to this queue.
% (Background, BK): Lowest priority queue, high throughput. Bulk data that requires maximum
throughput and is not time-sensitive is sent to this queue (FTP data, for example).
% (Video, VI): High priority queue, minimum delay. Time-sensitive data such as video and
other streaming media are automatically sent to this queue.
% (Voice, VO): Highest priority queue, minimum delay. Time-sensitive data such as Voice over
IP (VoIP) is automatically sent to this queue.
# CWmin: The value specified for the Minimum Contention Window is the lower limit of a range for the initial
random backoff wait time. Setting this value gives the WL-API330-039 a starting point before beginning to double
the window size when a collision is detected.
# CWMax: The value specified in the Maximum Contention Window is the upper limit for this doubling of the
random backoff. This doubling continues until either the data frame is sent or the Maximum Contention Window
size is reached.
# AIFS: The Arbitration Inter-Frame Spacing (AIFs) specifies a wait time (in milliseconds) for data frames. The AIFs
20

ensures that multiple access points do not try sending data at the same time but instead wait until a channel is
free.
# TxOp Limit: The Transmission Opportunity (TXOP) is an interval of time when a WMM client station has the right
to initiate transmissions onto the wireless medium.
# ACM BIT: Enabling this checkbox will allow the AP to broadcast the admission control bit.
# No ACK Policy bit: When the no acknowledgement (No ACK) policy is used, the recipient does not acknowledge
received packets during wireless packet exchange.

3.6.2 Extra Information

Users could pull out information such as Route table, ARP table, MAC table, Bridge table or STP available in the drop-
down list from system. The “Refresh” button is used to retrieve latest table information.

! Route table information : Select “Route table information” on the drop-down list to display route table.

WL-API330-039 could be used as a L2 or L3 device. It doesn’t support dynamic routing protocols such as RIP or
OSPF. Static routes to specific hosts, networks or default gateway are set up automatically according to the IP
configuration of system's interfaces. When used as a L2 device, it could switch packets and, as L3 device, it’s
capable of being a gateway to route packets inward and outward.

! ARP table Information : Select “ARP Table Information” on the drop-down list to display ARP table.

ARP associates each IP address to a unique hardware address (MAC) of a device. It is important to have a unique IP
address as final destination to switch packets to.

! Bridge table information : Select “Bridge Table information” on the drop-down list to display bridge table.

Bridge table will show Bridge ID and STP's Status on the each Ethernet bridge and its attached interfaces, the Bridge
Port should be attached to some interfaces (e.g. eth0, ath0~ath7 and ath0.wds0~ath0.wds7).

• Aggregation: By default, it's “Enable”.

! Aggregation Size: The Aggregation Size is in the range of 1024~65535, default is 50000. It determines the size (in
Bytes) of the larger frame.

4.1.2 Advanced Setup

To achieve optimal wireless performance, it is necessary to tweak advance setting per requirements properly, not
necessary higher the better or lower.

The administrator can change the RTS threshold and fragmentation threshold settings for the system. Please click on
Wireless -> Advanced Setup and follow the below setting

Slot Time: This setting is used to specify an amount of time the AP will wait after a collision before retransmitting a
packet. Reducing the slot time decreases the overall back-off, which will increase throughput.

• ACK Timeout: To effectively optimize throughput over long distance links, enter a value for Acknowledgement Time
Out from 1 to 372 microseconds in the 5 GHz in the field provided.

Beacon Interval: Beacons are packets sent by an access point to synchronize a wireless network. Specify a value in
milliseconds. The default (100) is recommended. Setting a higher beacon interval can help to save the power of
wireless clients, while setting a lower one can help a wireless client connect to an access point faster.

DTIM Interval: Set a Delivery Traffic Indication Message setting between 1 and 255. The default value is 1. DTIM is
a countdown informing clients of the next window for listening to broadcast and multicast messages.

• RTS Thresholds: RTS Threshold is in the range of 1~2347 byte. The default is 2347 byte.

• Short Preamble : By default, it’s “Enable”. To Disable is to use Long 128-bit Preamble Synchronization field.

The preamble is used to signal "here is a train of data coming" to the receiver. The short preamble provides 72-bit
Synchronization field to improve WLAN transmission efficiency with less overhead

Greenfield: Enable this option to reduce interference from other wireless networks in your area. If the channel width
is operating at 40MHz and there is another wireless network’s channel overlapping and causing interference, the
49

WL-API330-039 IEEE802.11bgn Ceiling/In-Wall AP

router will automatically change to 20MHz.

WMM: Select whether to Enable or Disable the WMM functionality of the access point.

$ AC Type: A different type of data is associated with each queue. The queue and associated priorities and
parameters for transmission are as follows:
# (Best Effort, BE): Medium priority queue, medium throughput and delay. Most traditional IP data
is sent to this queue.
# (Background, BK): Lowest priority queue, high throughput. Bulk data that requires maximum
throughput and is not time-sensitive is sent to this queue (FTP data, for example).
# (Video, VI): High priority queue, minimum delay. Time-sensitive data such as video and other
streaming media are automatically sent to this queue.
# (Voice, VO): Highest priority queue, minimum delay. Time-sensitive data such as Voice over IP
(VoIP) is automatically sent to this queue.

# CWim: The value specified for the Minimum Contention Window is the lower limit of a range for
the initial random backoff wait time. Setting this value gives the device a starting point before
beginning to double the window size when a collision is detected.

# CWmax: The value specified in the Maximum Contention Window is the upper limit for this
doubling of the random backoff. This doubling continues until either the data frame is sent or the
Maximum Contention Window size is reached.

# AIFS: The Arbitration Inter-Frame Spacing (AIFs) specifies a wait time (in milliseconds) for data
frames. The AIFs ensures that multiple access points do not try sending data at the same time but
instead wait until a channel is free.

# TxOp limit: The Transmission Opportunity (TXOP) is an interval of time when a WMM client
station has the right to initiate transmissions onto the wireless medium.

# No ACK Policy bit: When the no acknowledgement (No ACK) policy is used, the recipient does
not acknowledge received packets during wireless packet exchange.
