WHAT IS A PHD
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is a three year full time research degree.
A PhD challenges you to make a significant and original contribution to knowledge in your field by developing new ideas, or new
ways of approaching existing problems.
Through the course of your PhD, you will help develop new theories, methodologies and models that may shape the future of
your profession or discipline.

A PhD can be undertaken in any of AUT’s faculties. Within each faculty specific specialist Research Institutes are available.

FINANCIAL INFORMATION
• International PhD candidates enrolled in a PhD programme and conducting the majority of their study in New Zealand are
eligible for domestic tuition fees
• Wives/husbands of PhD candidates are eligible for work permits and dependent children are eligible for NZ Schooling at
primary or secondary level

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
The admission requirements for a doctoral degree is one of the following in a discipline which is appropriate to the
proposed research:

1) A master’s degree with honours; or,


2) A bachelor’s degree with honours (equivalent to four years of study)
The degree must have been gained at the standard equivalent to first class or second class (first division) honours
3) Admission to doctoral programme requires advanced learning in research and completion of a research project including a
written report on that research.
4) English Language requirements are an IELTS (Academic) of 6.5 overall with 7.0 in Writing, and no band less than 6.0.
For the Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering or Computer and Mathematical Sciences an IELTS (Academic) of 6.5 overall with
6.5 in Writing and no band less than 6.0.
Other English Language Tests are also acceptable such as TOEFL and Pearson Test of English.
APPLICATION PROCESS:
• Email the Graduate Research School doctoral.and.mphil.admissions@aut.ac.nz with the following documentation:
• Area of study
• Academic transcript and completion certificate for your Bachelor’s and Master’s degree including the grading system
• Evidence of English Language proficiency
• Title of Master’s thesis/dissertation/research project
• 1-2 page outline of proposed research project
• 2 written academic references (if your study is in the field of Engineering)
• When this is received it will be sent to the relevant Faculty for evaluation
• Once the Faculty confirms that they have appropriate supervision available and resources for the proposed research, you will
be asked to make a formal application.
• Details regarding the formal application process for doctoral programmes and relevant information will be sent at that time.

FARKHONDEH HASSANDOUST
PHD STUDENT
After graduating from University in both Iran and Malaysia Farkhondeh is currently pursuing her
PhD at AUT’s School of Business. Working as a strategic marketing manager for a global company,
providing cloud solutions, brought her to an interest in researching information system user
behaviour and how it can help management make good investment decisions.
She is finding AUT a friendly and supportive environment for this chapter of her global journey
and has already presented a paper at the prestigious European Conference on Information
Systems in Germany.
