About VOIP

▐ VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol

▐ Uses a IP based network to transmit voice traffic – common
infrastructure for voice, data, etc.
▐ TDM technology was designed for voice applications and guarantees
64kBit/s channels end to end
▐ Data networks were originally not designed for voice streams.
▐ Today, QoS (Quality of Service) can be implemented into IP networks
such that VoIP can be used
▐ Voice Traffic requires a constant data stream with short and constant
delays

© ABB
November 8, 2016
VoIP standardisation

▐ Open Standards:
▐ H.323 ITU-T standard
▐ SIP Session Initiation Protocol (RFC 2543, RFC3261) Emerged from the Internet
Community

▐ H.323 and SIP are not compatible,

▐ H.323 is older, and has currently a larger installed base but is more complicated to
implement than SIP

▐ To operate various VoIP products (multiple vendors), they must

comply to the same standard

▐ Proprietary Standards
▐ Skinny implemented into Cisco’s Call Manager
▐ Access limited to Cisco’s Partners
▐ Proprietary IPDECT protocol

IP - Mixing everything??

▐ VoIP does not necessarily mean to mix all traffic together

▐ IP is rather
Ø a standardised protocol that guarantees connectivity everywhere and allows
interaction of various processes
▐ IP still allows to have
separate networks for dedicated Applications
dedicated channels for IPBX trunks This is called engineered QOS
• Separate VLAN on FOX Networks
dedicated channels for VoIP subscribers • Dedicated Module for dedicated Traffic
(Ethernet instead Exlan-SUBH1)

Routers may allow

communication
between VLAN

Using IP does not mean mixing everything

VoIP - Gateway interface module
COSI1 : Media gateway for POTS to SIP

COSI1 key features

▐ Media gateway for POTS to SIP (Session Initiation Protocol)
▐ Registration with several IP PABX (Private Automatic Branch Exchange) possible
▐ 1:1 equipment protection supported
▐ Local call routing in case of lost connection to IP PABX supported
▐ QoS (Quality-of-Service) supported
▐ Up to 916 subscribers supported per card
▐ Up to 200 simultaneous calls supported
▐ Fully integrated in FOX615 platform and Network management system
▐ Fully supervised solution
▐ Subscribers from FOX515 (e.g. SUBH1) or FOX615 (LESU1) can be integrated

▐ The local call routing option further increases the availability of the
voice system. If this option is chosen, the COSI1 interface can act as a
local PABX for all connected POTS subscribers, in case the connection
to the IP PABX system is lost. Together with the hardware redundancy
option, as well as the ability to register on various IP PABX, this feature
helps users build telephony networks of the highest availability.

▐ To ensure high availability, 1:1 protection can be applied and

redundant registration to several IP PABX is possible. At newer
locations where VoIP phones are already installed, the EPOI1 PoE
interface can be integrated into FOX615 with the ability to feed IP
phones directly from the multiplexer. This ensures the availability of
the voice system during blackout conditions, since the multiplexer is
usually installed along with a backup power system.

Proposed upgrade steps using SV9100 IP PABX

• new IP PABX SV9100’s to be grouped together to create one

single PABX (Distributed PABX) per region
• Connect existing SOPHO PABX to SV9100 to build a second
layer
• Use remote subscribers for end stations where less capacity
required. With IP remote subscriber, it gives all the PABX
Features as a local subscriber.
• Delete inter area connections and interconnect the
SV9100 of all regions to build an IP based core telephony
