Friends Are Good For You!

Regular exercise, a healthy diet and a good night’s sleep are all important for our health. However, more and
more research suggests that being socially connected is just as important for our physical and mental health.

Studies show that having strong social connections can improve the quality of our life. People who are socially
connected are more likely to be confident, cooperative, and have more empathy for others. This then makes
them better company so they attract more friends, which makes them even more confident, and so it goes on!
Having friends gives people – teenagers in particular – a sense of belonging. Friendships also teach young people
valuable social skills, such as being more understanding of people who may be different from themselves.

Having friends doesn’t simply meet our basic human need to feel accepted and to belong, but friends also make
us happy. Happiness is not only good for our mental health; it’s good for our bodies, too. Feelings of happiness
reduce stress and studies show that people with positive social connections are less likely to get sick and are
50% more likely to live longer.

On the other hand, studies show us that a lack of social connection is linked with poor mental and physical health.
Loneliness can actually be as bad for the body as smoking, obesity, or high blood pressure.

Although social media has made us more connected to other people than ever before, more and more people
report feeling lonely and not having a close friend who they can talk to about problems. People who are lonely
are more likely to suffer from heart disease and take longer to recover from illness.

Some researchers say that our need for social connection is so powerful, that when we don’t feel connected or
accepted, or when we are being bullied, we can feel a “social pain”. One study by the University of California,
Los Angeles, suggests that when relationship problems such as these cause us stress, the body starts to release
white blood cells, just as it would if it were fighting a physical disease.

An interesting fact is that being socially connected isn’t linked to the number of friends you have. Have you ever
felt lonely in a big crowd? The most important thing is the feeling we have of being connected with others. If you
feel socially connected, then you will still have all the health benefits. The good news is that we may not be able
to control the number of friends we have, but we can control the quality of our friendships. So, next time you are
thinking about going to the gym or eating healthily, think about which healthy social habits you can develop
alongside these other habits. Spending more time face to face with your friends, being kind, and creating deep
connections with the people around you are good for others and good for you, too.
