MD SHA Roady Ready 2011
Road Ready E‐Construction Brochure
Spring and summer in Maryland offer a wide variety of recreational opportunities easily
reachable by a short road trip. These seasons also offer the best weather for road construction,
which is often most active during “off peak” time to avoid heavy traffic. Keep your road trip
from turning into a slow moving construction tour, the State Highway Administration (SHA)
created “Road Ready” to help you avoid construction zones or allow extra time to reach your
destination.
Road Ready provides a list of the major projects along State highways. Designed in an all-
electronic format this year, each project listing links to more information and/or a map. SHA
includes nearby Scenic Byways information to consider alternate routes when avoiding
construction zones.
In addition to the major projects listed you may also encounter mobile or short-term work zones.
Always drive attentively and slowly through any work zone. Whether it’s a tree trimming
operation or a bridge replacement project, highway crews deserve a high degree of safety so they
can go home at the end of the day unharmed. Think Orange-the color of construction
equipment and slow down.
Over the past 10 years in Maryland there has been an average of 2,600 work zone crashes each
year, injuring more than 1,400 and killing 12 people. Nationally, more than 700 people are killed
each year in work zone crashes – and the majority of them are motorists or their occupants.
Hundreds of state employees, contractors and sub-contractors will be in work zones this season.
While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to keep traffic safely moving in work
zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes.
Citizens can also follow SHA on Twitter @MDSHA for current news releases, alerts or major
incidents in Maryland.
