We have completed our Literature Circles on The Marrow Thieves. As your final project, you will
complete a “The Marrow Thieves” Portfolio to show your understanding of the unit.

Your portfolio will be submitted via your Weebly Blog that we created earlier this semester.

Blog Topic #1:
Large urban cities no longer exist. This book is set wholly or partly in small towns, villages or
settlements. You have grown up in a small town. Discuss in what ways this has been a positive
experience and in what ways it has been a negative experience. Then, discuss whether you
plan to live in a small town (the same one?) in the future, or move away to a larger city.

Blog Topic #2:

Who is the bravest character in this book? Explain your choice. Describe who you think is the
bravest person you know. Explain clearly why you selected that person.

Blog Topic #3:

Do some research into how Indigenous people are treated by the Canadian justice system, by
the police and the courts. Try to find out about a recent case in the news involving Indigenous
people, then summarize what happened. The final question to answer: Is the Canadian justice
system fair and just in its treatment of Indigenous people?

Now that you have finished reading the novel, discuss why this book should or should not be
required reading on the grade 9 course today. Some possible questions to answer to help guide
your response: Is the book relevant? Did you learn things about yourself and the world? Did it

1. Passage/Quotation Analysis

You will select three passages/quotations which are particularly important, powerful, beautiful,
interesting, shocking, or noteworthy in some way. Quote the passages, with page reference, and
explain the importance of each one in a complete paragraph. Complete the following:

Passage: Importance:

“But there was no more north in my
heart. And I wasn’t sure what I meant
to do until I said it out loud. I’m going
after Minerva.” (Dimaline 153)
I find this quote very powerful for different reasons.
First of all, Frenchie shows that he really cares
about the others in the group like they are family to
him. Secondly, he wanted to abandon the safety of
all of them so that they could save Minerva. Finally,
this shows that Frenchie is very brave to try to save
Minerva by going to the Recruiters.

“No one is more important that anyone
else, French” (Dimaline 58)
I find this quote to be very important. First of all,
Miig is showing that he is a very wise man by saying
everyone is equal and nobody is more than
anybody else. Secondly, this shows that Miig is a
wise elder in the group because he knows important
things like this.

“I heard him whine a little at the end of
his plea. But then, maybe it was just
the wind. I pulled the trigger and the
wind stopped blowing.” (Dimaline 137)
I find this quote to be very powerful. This quote
described the part in the story where Frenchie
changed greatly as a character. After seeing Lincoln
kill RiRi, Frenchie was so angry that he decided to
shoot Travis. This changed Frenchie’s character
making him get out of the child stage and move into
the adult stage.

2. Artistic Analysis
You will submit 3 drawings, photographs, video clips, etc. that each capture a significant
moment, scene, character, etc. from the section. Copy the exact words from the text your visual
is attempting to capture, then explain why your selections are important.

I chose this image
because it represents
when RiRi died because
she got pushed off the
cliff, and Frenchie looking
down at where RiRi fell,
noticing the boot. This is
an important part of the
story because this is the
first death of the group,
making it very sad for
them.
I chose this image to
represent what the council
base could look like. This
was an important event
because this is the first
time they see the council
and their base.
I chose this image to
represent the area where
they tried to save Minerva
in. It happened in a forest
on the road with a truck.
This was an important
event because this was
when Minerva died and it
was the last climatic event
in the story.
 3. Interior Monologues

Select any 3 characters from the end of the novel, and write one-paragraph monologues from
each characters’ point of view. Consider what each character is thinking/feeling at the end. What
is each sorry/happy about? What is each hoping/planning for the future? Complete the
following:

“A week has passed since Minerva died. We still haven’t gotten

Frenchie over it but we are starting to feel better now. I’ve decided that I
want to stay with the council so I can be close to the group and
Dad. We are planning on staying around the same area but trying
to get new members to join the council.”

“Lately I’ve been feeling a lot happier. I’m still sad that Minerva has
Miig died, but Issac has been helping me get over it and think about the
present. I have decided that I’m going to stay at the council to stay
safe until the Recruiters stop coming.”

“It has been around a week since Minerva died. I’ve still been
Rose feeling really sad about it, but Frenchie has recently been trying to
cheer me up. I’ve really been thinking and decided that I’m going to
stay with the council with the rest of the group to stay close with
them. I’ve been worried about being captured by the Recruiters, but
we haven’t seen any since the Minerva incident.”
