Quarter 1 – Module 3:

MULTIPLICATION OF FRACTIONS

Introduction

This module is designed to help you think and develop Business mathematical ideas. There
are times when you will feel confused, and there are times when it will be necessary to work
on an idea over a period of several days. You will encounter many interesting and
challenging problems in this module.

Objectives:
 Multiply fraction by another fraction.
 Multiply fraction by a whole number.
 Multiply whole number by a mixed number.
 Multiply mixed number by a mixed number.

Vocabulary List:

 Fraction – represents a part of a whole.

 Numerator – is the number above the fraction bar.
 Denominator – is the number below the fraction bar.
 Proper fraction – These are fraction that express amounts which are less
than a unit.
 Improper fraction – These are fraction that express amount which are equal
to or greater than a unit.
 Mixed fraction – These are numbers that consist of a whole number and a
fraction.

Getting Ready:

Direction: Find the products of the following.

5 9 9
2 5
3. 12 × × =¿
7 6

Starting Point:

There are 3 simple steps to multiply fractions

1. Multiply the top numbers (the numerators).

2. Multiply the bottom numbers (the denominators).

3. Simplify the fraction if needed.

Example 1:

1/2 × 2/5

Step 1. Multiply the top numbers:

1/2 × 2/5  =  1 × 2   =  2

Step 2. Multiply the bottom numbers:

1/2 × 2/5  =  1 × 2/2 × 5  =  2/10

Step 3. Simplify the fraction:

2/10 = 1/5

Example 2 :

1/3 × 9/16

Step 1. Multiply the top numbers:

1/3 × 9/16  =  1 × 9   =  9

Step 2. Multiply the bottom numbers:

1/3 × 9/16  =  1 × 9/3 × 16  =  9/48

Step 3. Simplify the fraction:

9/48 = 3/16

(This time we simplified by dividing both top and bottom by 3)

Example 3:

5 is also 51

Then continue as before.

2/3  ×  5

Make 5 into 5/1 :

2/3 × 5/1

Now just go ahead as normal.

Multiply tops and bottoms:

2/3 × 5/1  =  2 × 5/3 × 1  =  10/3

The fraction is already as simple as it can be.

Answer = 10/3

Or you can just think of the whole number as being a "top" number:

Example 4:

3 × 2/9

Multiply tops and bottoms:

3  × 2/9  =  3 × 2/9  =  6/9

Simplify:

6/9 = 2/3

Example 5:
What is 3 1/4 × 3 1/3 ?

Convert Mixed to Improper Fractions:

3 1/4 = 13/4

3 1/3 = 10/3

Multiply

13/4 × 1/03 = 130/12

Convert to a mixed number:

130/12 = 10 10/12

And simplify:

10 10/12 = 10 5/6

Here it is in one line:

3 1/4 × 3 1/3 = 13/4 × 10/3 = 130/12 = 10 10/12 = 10 5/6

Practice your skills:

Test 1: Find the product of the following. Use method 1 and method 2 if mixed
numbers are involved. Always reduce answer to lowers term. Write your final answer on the
space provided.

Developing skills:
Problem solving: Solve the following with complete solution.

1. An only son inherited a 3/4hectare lot. He decided to build a 40-door condominium

on the lot. The floor area of the units is uniform and the total floor are of the entire
condominium is 1/5 less than the area of the lot to provide for certain amenities.
Compute for the floor area each condominium units.

clothing, and 1/20 for recreation:

a. How much does he spend for each?

b. How much is his total expenses?

c. How much does he save?
