INTRODUCTION OF THE LESSON

Our lesson focuses on the relationship of human freedom to responsibility.

Let’s face it, life can be challenging. We all have things in our life that
challenges us especially our freedom and its relationship with responsibility– whether
it is people, situations or the environment we live in.

What is the relationship of freedom and responsibility?

I. The Freedom Model: Are you Proactive or Reactive?
One of the highly sought speaker and self-improvement author today is Stephen
R. Covey. In his bestselling book he enumerated seven habits of highly effective people.
The first in his list is being proactive. According to him, there are two kinds of people –
the reactive and proactive. Highly proactive people recognize the true meaning of the
word responsibility –“response-ability” – the ability to choose your response. While the
reactive people are easily affected and controlled by their social environment, by the
“social wheather.” When people treat them well, they feel well; when people don’t, they
become defensive or protective. Let’s look at his Proactive Model below.

The Proactive Model

Freedom
Stimulus (environment, Response (based on your
culture, events and
conditions)
To Choose motivations, intensions and
goals)

We have self-awareness – an ability to understand one’s feeling, attitude, motives and other
personal conditions. An imagination – the ability to create in our minds beyond our present reality.
Conscience –deep awareness of right and wrong. An independent will – the ability to act based on our
self-awareness, free from all influences.

II. Freedom Circle: The Circle of Concern vs The Circle of Influence
In the book “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People,” Stephen R. Covey
also talked about the revolutionary concept of Circle of Concern and Circle of
Influence.
As we look at those things within our Circle of Concern, it becomes apparent that
there are some things over which we have no real control and others that we can do
nothing about. We could identify those concerns in the latter group by circumscribing
them within the smaller Circle of Influence.
By determining which of these two circles is the focus of most our time and
energy, we can discover much about the degree of our proactivity.

Circle of

Circle of

Circle of Influence Circle of

Influence

Concern

Concern

PROACTIVE FOCUS (Positive REACTIVE FOCUS (negative

energy enlarges the Circle of energy reduces the Circle of
Influence) Influence)
Proactive people focus their effort in the circle of influence. They work on the things they can
do something about. The nature of their energy is positive, enlarging and magnifying, causing their Circle
of Influence to increase.

Reactive people, on the other hand, focus their efforts in the Circle of Concern. They focus on
the weakness of the other people, the problem in the environment, and circumstances over which they
have no control. Their focus results in blaming and accusing attitudes, reactive language, and increase
feelings of victimization. The energy generated by the focus, combined with neglect in areas they could
do something about, causes their Circle of Influence to shrink.

How can I exercise freedom in a responsible and beneficial manner?

Roberto D. Abella in his book, Introduction to the Philosophy of the Human Person gave us at least
three ways to exercise freedom in a responsible and beneficial manner.

1. Freedom should be exercised with control and a recognition of reasonable limits. We set limits to
our own freedom and learn to moderate or control our thought, emotions, and actions depending on
the situation.

2. It should also be exercised with regard for knowledge and truth. As rational beings, it is natural for
us to think before we act. We use our freedom to act and acquire more knowledge, and we use this
knowledge in orderQ2.

situations.

3. We should recognize and uphold not only our individual freedom but also the freedom of others.

As human persons, our nature drives us to uphold human dignity and goodness. This view has led to the
assertion that freedom is a recognized and guaranteed right for for all persons
