It was 2010 and the war in Iraq was still raging on. Families had lost loved ones, and friendships ended tragically. Why did it start?
When will it end? These are the questions that our characters will soon enough ask…..
Serena and Henry had just walked out of McDonald’s and into their car. They had been friends ever since they could
Henry suddenly turned to Serena, and his brown eyes bore into her hazel ones.
“Serena, would you marry me?”, Henry asked pulling out a diamond ring.
He out the ring on her finger with a smile on his face. But then it suddenly got serious.
“There’s something else. I’m going to have to go to Iraq for a year.” , he said.
Henry then dropped her off, giving a hello to her parents, and telling them the news. They wished him good luck and
that he would be safe. He thanked them and they both went their ways.
Serena went to bed with questions in her head. Would he be alright? Will he be alive? Will I ever see him again?
This went on in her head all night. She couldn’t life without Henry. She remembered him standing up for her when she
admitted being Orthodox in a Lutheran school and everybody stared at her like she was a new species. He didn’t care at all and
still hung out with her and always watched her back.

The nest morning Henry came to say goodbye. Both had tears in their eyes and never wanted to say goodbye. Both
wished that they didn’t have to be separated just because of someone else’s cruelty.
Serena twisted the ring on her finger and watched Henry go into the bus that was waiting for him. Neither one looked
back.
Every night Serena prayed to God for Henry’s safety. She knew that without God, love and life would be meaningless.

Henry looked around at the helicopter ahead of him. His mind was wondering of the memories of him and Serena. One
memory made him laugh. Serena was singing to herself a little louder than usual. Henry looked at her with curious eyes and
asked what she was doing. She replies that singing was her passion and that she sung to herself a lot. Serena always had a way to
Henry then started to pray for Serena. He prayed that she would be comforted at knowing he was safe. People stared at
him as they watched him pray. They were amazed that he didn’t care what they thought of his openness. They wondered if they

Dear Serena,
Not a day goes by that I don’t miss you. The war is filled with so many deaths every day. My best friend that I made
here, his name was Lamont, died yesterday of battle wounds. We all mourn his death as we speak. He was such a good person
with a smile on his face all the time. I wish you could have met him.
Thank you for the care package you sent me last month. All those pictures you sent were beautiful. You always were a
good photographer.
Love,
Henry.
Serena was saddened that Lamont had died. She hoped that his family would find comfort. She was also glad that he
liked the care package. She still worried about his safety.
Dear Henry,
Since you’ve been gone, it feels pretty empty. My friends aren’t as kind or funny as you are.
Most people want me to forget about seeing you again, but I don’t listen to them. I know you’re safe because God is keeping you
safe.
Write soon.
Love,
Serena
Serena put her letter in the mail and walked away with comfort knowing that Henry was alive. She also remembered
there were six months until he got home. That put a big smile on her face as she anxiously counted the days until he came back.

Two months later there was a knock on Serena’s door. She opened it and found a young man of about 20 standing at
her door.
“I’m supposed to give this letter to you.” , he said holding out the envelope. He then turned on his heel and left.
It is my condolences to inform you that Henry Evangeline has been missing action.

Two months later Serena sat on her doorstep going over the recent events. She was still in shock over Henry. Just then,
a man she didn’t recognize walked over to her. He had a scar on him arm and warm, comforting brown eyes.
“My fiancé left for the war. He was supposed to be back today, but they said that he went M.I.A.” ,she replied.
“He was smart, handsome, and funny. He was always a gentleman, and listened to what I had to say. There’s no one
“Did he also give you a locket that silver heart with diamonds all over it.?” He asked curiously.
“Yeah, how di- wait, Henry?!” , she asked with a smile on her face.
They embraced with joy that they were together again. Henry was last seen at one battle, but after it was over, he went
with the rest, but those people were spies on the other side and kidnapped him. He managed to escape using a secret tunnel he
found. The scar had come from a barb brushing against him.
Serena didn’t care whether he had a scar or not. She was overjoyed that Henry was alive and happy, and that they could
