1. Chlorination: The process of addition of chlorine tablets in water for purification is called chlorination.
2. Decantation: The process of separating clean water
from sediments is called decantation.
3. Evaporation: The process of changing of liquid into
vapour is called evaporation.
4. Condensation: The process of changing of gas into
liquid is called condensation.
II. Answer the following questions:
1. List three ways to conserve water in day-to-day life. Ans: The three ways to conserve water in day-to- day life are as follows: a) Close the running tap while brushing your teeth. b) Get the leaky taps fixed. c) Do not pollute sources of water by throwing garbage into the water.
2. Explain water cycle and name the processes that
are involved. Ans: The movement of water from land to sky and back to land again is called water cycle. The heat of the sun evaporates water from the oceans, seas, rivers, lakes, ponds etc. This water vapour goes up in the air. In the upper layer of the atmosphere, the temperature is low. When water vapour comes in contact with the cooler air, it condenses and forms tiny droplets of water. These droplets come together to form clouds. It is called condensation. When clouds become heavier and cannot hold together, they fall in the form of rain, hail or snow. This process is called as precipitation. The rainwater flows into rivers, streams, lakes and finally into seas and oceans. This is called collection. This cycle continues again and again.
3. What is rainwater harvesting?
Ans: The technique of collecting rainwater for future use is called rainwater harvesting.
4. Name some methods to purify water.
Ans: The different methods to purify water are filtration, boiling, chlorination, decantation and water purifiers.
III. Give reasons for the following:
1. We cannot drink water from a pond or lake directly. Ans: We cannot drink water from a pond or lake directly because this water is not pure and contains many impurities.
2. There are liquid droplets when we take out a
water bottle from refrigerator. Ans: When a cold bottle is taken out from the refrigerator, the water vapour present in the room surrounding the bottle condenses and form droplets of water on the surface of the bottle. Note: Draw and colour a neat labelled diagram of water cycle in the Science CW.
