ORIGAMI

We are learning to:

• Use symmetry to create a paper sculpture

PROJECT OVERVIEW
For this assignment, you will make three origami boxes. For your first box, follow the instructions for the Masu
box. You will need to make two identical boxes. One for the base and one for the lid. Next, you will research a
second box that is of interest to you. Follow the directions (printed or video) for the box you have selected.
Your third box will be of your own design. Below are some things to think about when designing a box.

1. What finished shape do I prefer?

2. What size do I want the finished box to be?
3. Does it need to open and close from more than one side?
4. Should the base and lid be separate or will there be a hinge?
5. Do I prefer flaps that interlock to hold box closed?

You will be rapid-prototyping the box. This is where you make dozens of scale models to find a solution. Use
scrap/recycled paper. Old magazines, newspapers or junk mail are perfect at this stage. Once you have the
steps down, create one with good quality origami paper, of hand painted/stamped/decorated paper for your
final copy. Your box must open and close with the use of tape, glue, string or staples.
