Trouble Deploying OVF Template from vSphere datastore (2117310)

Details

After you Export OVF Template, then Upload Files to Datastore, the MD5 checksum of the VMDK file changes. When you try to Import OVF
Template, it fails with the message "OVF deployment failed: SHA1 digest of file <VMname>.vmdk does not match manifest" and claims "the task
was canceled by a user."

Whereas Import OVF Template works fine from a drive on your Windows host running vSphere Web Client.

Solution

Steps to duplicate:

1. Select a VM and Export OVF Template to your Windows host running vSphere Web Client.
2. Following documentation for Upload Files to Datastores, create a new folder, and upload the .mf, .ovf, and VMDK files.
3. From a browser on the ESXi Welcome page, click Browse datastores on this host's inventory.
4. Navigate to the uploaded VM directory, find the OVF file, and copy its link location.
5. In the vSphere Web Client, click Import OVF Template and supply the link location as source URL.

One workaround is to copy the exported OVF files directly to the ESXi datastore using WinSCP or equivalent. (SSH must be enabled on the ESXi
host.)

An easier workaround is to remove, or not upload, the *.mf manifest file. Without the SHA checksum in the manifest, vSphere allows the OVF
template to be imported, and the resulting VM should boot.
