I. Introduction

Cybercrime also known as computer crime involves a wide range of criminal activities that
are carried out by using and/or targeting a computer related system especially illegally to access,
transmit or manipulate data. Cybercrime is a criminal activity that either targets or uses a
computer, a computer network or a network device. Most cybercrime is committed by
cybercriminals or hacker who want to make money. However, occasionally cybercrime aims to
damage computers or networks for reasons other than profit.

Crimes that use computer networks or devices to advance other ends include among others,
the following:

 Fraud;  cyber stalking and harassment;

 identity theft;  cyber contraband

 email spam;  cyber laundering;
 the propagation of illegal obscene or  cyber terrorism;
offensive content;  cyber vandalism
 cyber extortion;

The popularity of social networks and the rising use of online technology in daily life
together with the advancement of mobile technology, help to create the ideal environment for a
variety of cybercrime categories and the spread of illegal internet content. Children and teenagers
together comprise not only the most enthusiastic adopters of new technologies and features, but
also the most innocent group within the population. Additionally, the general populace is not
fully informed about how serious the issue is.

The first Canadian resource of its kind, Cybercrime: Awareness, Prevention, and
Response, effectively addresses the role of crime in this more technologically dependent age and
networked world. A broad range of cybercrimes, such as online fraud and exploitation, identify
fraud, social engineering, phishing and cyberbullying are presented in detail, with prevention
measures, information collecting techniques and reaction plans. Students and professionals will
be prepared to diplomatically handle cyber-related crimes from a law enforcement perspective.

In addition, according to the article entitle, Cyber Security Statistics, The Ultimate List of

Stats Data, & Trends For 2022, (n.d), 71.1 million people fall victim to cybercrimes yearly. It

also added that the top 5 cybercrimes in 2021 were:

o Extortion

o Identity theft

o Personal data breach

o Non-payment

Identity fraud damages for the year totalled $56 billion, according to a 2021 identity

fraud study by Javelin Strategy & Research. Cybercrime may have a significant negative impact

on both persons and businesses, including money loss, trust erosion, and reputational harm.
