LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET IN SCIENCE-9

WEEK 3-QUARTER 3

I. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT:
Our country is a home to more than a hundred of volcanoes, energy has been tapped from them.
Actually, the Philippines ranks second in the world’s production of geothermal energy. According to the
Department of Energy, 14.4% of the country’s total power generation is produced from geothermal energy
which is cheaper than the electricity production using natural gas, coal, and hydropower. The earth is said to
be extremely hot from within. The heat from the Earth’s interior is a source of energy called geothermal energy.
The energy is generated in two ways: geothermal power plants and geothermal heat pumps. They differ in the
depth of heat source to produce energy.

II. LEARNING SKILLS FROM THE MELCs:

Illustrate how energy from volcanoes maybe tapped for human use.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:
1. Describe how geothermal powerplant works.
2. Illustrate how geothermal is transformed to generate electricity.
III. ACTIVITIES:

ACTIVITY 1

Using the flowchart and figure 1 on page 2 , illustrate the steps in the generation of electricity in a
geothermal power plant by filling-in the flowchart with the appropriate descriptions. Choose and write the
appropriate description in each box.
1.
• The cooled water is pumped
back into the earth to begin the process
again.
2.
•The steam spins a turbine, which is connected
to a generator that
produces electricity.

• ooling tower cools the steam

where it condenses back to water.

• hen the water reaches the surface, the drop in

W
pressure causes the
water to turn into steam.

• Wells are drilled deep into the

earth to pump steam or hot water to the
surface

ACTIVITY 2: Give the functions or importance of the different parts of the geothermal power
plant. Complete the given table below.
Parts Functions

1.Production Well

2.Steam Brine

3.Turbine

4.Generator

5. Cooling Tower

6.Injection Well

B. ANALYSIS for Activity 1 and 2

1. How does hot water reach the surface of the ground?

2. What causes the water to turn into steam?

3. What is responsible for the spinning of a turbine?

4. How does the steam condenses back to water?

5. Where is the cooled water pumped back?

6. What do you think is the function of the generator in a geothermal power plant?

C. ABSTRACTION
1. What is geothermal energy? Why is it a renewable source of energy?
2. How is geothermal energy transformed into electricity for human use?

D. APPLICATION
Mount Malinao is considered as potentially active volcano. The geothermal energy
supplied in the Geothermal Power Plant in Tiwi,Albay comes from Mount Malinao. Do you
think there are hazards/danger in the community of Tiwi and Malinao due to its Geothermal
Power Plant? How can those hazards of the Geothermal Power Plant be prevented?
