Lesson 4

In this lesson, Varun will shed some light on the central ideas at the core of
multiple movies across eras, and tell you the steps to be taken before arriving at
the “one idea” that will birth your screenplay in the future.

In a nutshell:

Write what you know

If you know a singular world then explore it from various angles alike Robin
Cook and John Grisham

Chase authenticity. It is the biggest aesthetic in cinema

Develop the instinct to know the worth of your idea (perform the exercise at
the end of this lesson)

Lesson 4

Before you move further:

Perform the emotional mapping exercise for yourself.

1 First make a list of films you wish you would have made like whatever;

2 Lagaan, Apocalypse Now whichever film you would have loved to see your

credit as a writer on.

3 Make another list of movies you would remake if given a chance and write

down what changes you would want to make to them.

4 Then make another list for novels, short stories that you want to adapt

Make sense of your own thoughts:

Perform the emotional mapping exercise for yourself.

Make a list of your ideas now

Bring out the emotional map that you created from the previous

exercise and see what ideas combine with your strongest felt emotions

Continuously filter till the whole list boils down to 4-5 ideas

Rewatch the films you have mentioned, read those novels and short stories again

and just live with this list, before you finalize that one idea you’re willing to invest

your next two years in
