Clearing the Confusion Over Vented Regulators

Regulators are complex devices that can perform a number of different functions in a fluid system that are often cru-
cial to facility operations and safety. Vented regulators increase accuracy, safety and overall performance over non-
vented regulators under certain operating conditions and applications. Here we will clarify this important feature so
you can make the best decision for your system.

With a non-self-venting regulator,

you cannot reduce the down-
stream pressure if a valve is closed
downstream. Venting the system
using a purge valve will be neces-
sary for the gauge to display the
new set-pressure.

The purpose of a self venting regula-

tor is for when flow stops. The
downstream pressure needs to be
relieved, and rather than place a
relief valve downstream, the cus-
tomer can opt for a venting regula-
tor and eliminate the need for a
valve. The downside is that an o-
ring has been added so you will
have to deal with potential issues
like material compatibility.

In critical applications, if the
diaphragm were to fail, then it
may release toxic gas to atmos-
phere. This captured vent will
allow for a safe way to prevent
this from occurring. The cap-
tured vent is for particular ap-
plications, but it is generally
more in demand than the self
venting.

In those critical applications

where you want to incorporate
the benefits of downstream
pressure relief and the safety
of the captured vent port, the
self vent with captured vent
may be the best option. The
two piece cap design allows for
alignment of the vent port as
you may want that to vent
safely away from an operator.
