MENTAL HEALTH
MENTAL HEALTH
Mental health is an integral and essential component of
health. The WHO Constitution states, "Health is a
state of complete physical, mental and social well-being
and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity."
Mental health is a state of well-being in which a person
realizes his or her capabilities and is able to cope with
the normal stresses of life, to work productively, and
to contribute to his or her community.
Determinants of Mental Health

✔ Individual mental health is determined by multiple social, psychological and

biological factors. Persistent socioeconomic pressures are a well-known risk to
the mental health of individuals and communities. The most obvious evidence
relates to indicators of poverty, and in particular to low educational attainment.

✔ Poor mental health is also associated with rapid social change, stressful working
conditions, gender discrimination, social exclusion, unhealthy lifestyles, risks of
violence and poor physical health, and human rights violations.

✔ There are also specific personality and psychological factors that make a person
more vulnerable to mental disorders. Finally, mental disorders also have
biological causes, dependent, for example, on genetic factors or biochemical
imbalances in the brain.
HOW TO IMPROVE MENTAL HEALTH

✔ Maintaining a positive attitude

✔ Finding a balance between positive and
negative emotions
✔ Practicing gratitude (be grateful)
✔ Take care of your physical health
✔ Being physically active
✔ Getting enough sleep
✔ Eating healthy
RISK AND PROTECTIVE
FACTORS
ASSOCIATED WITH
DRUG USE
What are risk factors?

These are aspects of the environment or personality that make it

more likely (risk factors) that the person may develop a given
problem.

What are protective factors?

An individual attribute, situational condition, environment or context
that reduces the likelihood of problematic drug use.
The following table describes how risk and protective
factors affect people in five settings, in which
preventive interventions can be made

Environments Risk Factors Protective Factos

Individual Early aggressive behavior Selfcontrol

Family Lack of parental supervision Parent monitoring

Friends Substance abuse Peer communication

School Drug availability Anti-drug policies

Community
Poverty Strong neighborhood attachment
Thus, the individual, family, peer, school and community
environment must be considered when detecting these
factors and establishing prevention programs.

Risk factors can influence drug abuse in several ways.

The greater the risks to which one is exposed, the
greater the likelihood that a person will abuse drugs.
Similarly, certain protective factors, such as strong
parent-child bonding, may have a greater impact on risk
reduction during early childhood.

An important goal of prevention is to change the balance

between risk and protective factors, so that there are more
protective factors than risk situations.
DRUG
PREVENTION
DRUG USE PREVENTION

Drug use prevention is the "set of actions aimed at eliminating or modifying

risk factors and promoting protective factors against drug use or other
addictive behaviors, in order to prevent them from occurring, delay their
onset, or prevent them from becoming a problem for the person or their
social environment".

It is proven that the best way to combat addictions is precisely with
