Atoms: the building blocks of the universe. They

combine to create everything. Everything you see
and taste and touch, their existence defines our
reality. From the helium hearts of stars to our
calcium-filled bones or the silicon that drives the
smartphones in our pockets, our entire,
observable universe is made from this small,
specific list of elements; these tiny structures that
make up every last part of our reality. The Atomic
Tarot is so named after these essential parts of
being and inspired by the pieces of our lives that
make up our world, each card adds its own
element to create a larger piece of the whole.

Science, at its core, is about the observation of

patterns, about asking the right questions and
about learning from results. For the infinite
number of problems the universe presents us,
there are an uncountable number of ways a
person can approach them. Tarot is not science of
course, but there is a strange sort of symmetry
when you combine the unlikely pair. Science and
magic. The balance of logic and interpretation.

divided into their subgroups of noble gasses,
transition metals, and alkali, so too can the tarot

all the ups and downs, stops and starts, loves and
heartbreaks along the way.

Atomic Tarot

MAJOR
ARCANA

The Major Arcana is a 22 card set within the tarot

which many consider to be the core of a deck.
These cards take us on a journey through a post-
apocalyptic landscape shaped by fantasy and logic,
and populated by creatures from both sides of the
divide.

Beginning with the innocent wonder of The Fool to

the wizened fulfillment of The World, the cards
also tell the story of a spiritual evolution into
enlightenment in a world shaped through the
combination of magic and science.

We tried to fill our cast of this tarot deck with a

collection of characters that was reflective of
reality and inclusive to the wide variety of shapes,
colors and sizes that a person can be in this
world. Our hope is that everyone will be able to
recognize a little bit of themselves somewhere
inside.

And so, as we follow the Fool on their journey, our

hope is that you can draw on common parallels
between your own stages in life and those in the

major heart of the cards.

At one time, the atom-bomb was regarded as

something of great potential, yet we know that its
fallout can poison lands. Atomic power might be a
solution to our energy crisis, but only if we treat it
with the respect pure power deserves. Otherwise,
we find ourselves in disaster after disaster,
unaware that it's our own naivety that’s destroying
us.

Appropriately, the number of the Fool is zero, a

number which is neither positive nor negative but
has properties and potential of both. And while it
may be true that we all begin as a blank slate, all
things must begin somewhere. That speaks true
for all things, across all areas of the spectrum;
0 both positive and negative alike. So while the Fool
may speak of unknown and eager potential, it also

The Magician

The Magician is full of active energy. Creative,

innovative, quick-thinking, he represents the
number One. The first. The start. A catalyst of
motion. He is a person who holds power in his
own hands and works hard to possess the
necessary elements that fuel his creations.
Because of this, his limitations are bound only to
the workings of his own imagination.

Originality, mystery, and the ability to stand on

one’s own are all things the Magician encourages.
He stands restless, relentless in his search for the
next step beyond and we see him lifting his own
hand, drawing the power of his creations to him.
The tides flow beneath and the stars shine above;
at the edge of the sea and the sky, the Magician
finds infinity around him. A universe full of
potential, he sees possibilities where others might
see only fantasy.

This can cause others to see him as a bit eccentric,

but they say true geniuses often are. In fact, the
Magician of the Atomic Tarot is inspired by real
world inventor, Nikola Tesla, a great engineer
whose innovations were undermined by

Priestess has access to it all. She is literally

plugged into the universe, her pen poised to
record as she processes all the information
flowing through her. The Priestess is not just a
conduit, letting the data wash over her. To truly
know something, we can’t just hear it, we need to
understand. Under the ancient light of stars, the
Priestess quietly and patiently sorts through the
facts, till she comes to an understanding of truth.

The Priestess
Element: Water
A beautiful guardian of knowledge and power, the
Priestess is a being of both patience and instinct. Ruling Planet: Moon
One who processes information before she acts,
but is able to do so with such grace and fluidity,
it’s as if it were a supernatural ability.

She has strong ties to the number two - an even,

balanced number. Also, a reminder that there are
often two sides to everything. The black and white
pillars at her sides indicate that not everything is
good and not everything is bad, but often a
peculiar mixture of both. Life is a very mysterious
thing, and the better informed you are, the better
your decisions will be.

She sits restful, mindful and waiting, with a world

of knowledge at her fingertips; shining with the
glow of enlightenment, illumination and creation
beneath the crescent of a moon. Her lesson is that
knowledge is the most powerful commodity. And
that access can change everything. From small
personal issues, like wanting to know all sides of a
story before acting, to grand sweeping knowledge,
such as fulfillment through higher learning, the

The Empress is most definitely a symbol of

femininity, and she carries a staff embedded with
the sigil of Venus; a proud and significant symbol
of the female gender.

Her belly is literally fertile, overflowing and full of

life. An archetype of mother earth, she herself is a
self contained ecosystem; a woman who takes joy
in being able to nurture and care for her world.

The Empress

A beautiful queen, enjoying the fruits of her own Ruling Planet: Venus
labor, The Empress is a symbol of fertility and
creation. She bears a fragile garden inside herself,
safe where it can grow without harm. She knows
that to truly protect what she holds dear, she must
be strong and she must provide. What grows
inside her may not be life, but an idea, a dream or
an emotion. None of which are always easily
brought to fruition, and down her arm trickles a
thin line of blood that proves her hardship. But
The Empress has the strength to protect and
provide for her joy. And with her caring, nurturing
demeanor, it becomes something that can spread;
something that can make the whole world grow.

The Empress walks alone in a vast field of wheat

beneath the bright blue of a sky as she eats a
ripened pomegranate. The pomegranate itself
contains eons of history, including a variant of
Eve’s apple or the fruit which binds Persephone to
Hades. Frequently painted as temptation that a
woman gives into, it is often glossed over how it
can also provide empowerment.

The Emperor is plugged into the world, not only a

participant but part of its very structure. The
tallest buildings must also have the strongest
foundations, if they want to remain standing and it
falls to the Emperor to see that the foundation is
laid, that the base code has been set, and that his
world will be able to function at its optimal
potential.

Leadership and stability for the future are

something the Emperor's ultimate goals strives
tirelessly to achieve. But despite his imposing
exterior and sometimes aggressive demeanor, he
is a man possessing a strong and powerful heart.

escape, but to understand where we came from
and what ties us all together so that we can
appreciate it all the more.

Some are open to his message; open to learning

and listening and light. Others are not. But their
choice not to listen doesn’t just hurt themselves,
ignorance hurts us all. We’re all on this world
together, and the better that we all understand
that, through science and through ourselves, the
better this world will be for us all.

The Priest
Reversed: Abuse of Position, Breakdown, Poor
Another card of many that was inspired by a real- Counsel, Rejection of Values
world person, the Priest of the Atomic Tarot is an
homage to the great Carl Sagan. The card of the Element: Earth
Priest is less about religion than its title presents,
but more about connection and the belief that we Ruling Planet: Venus
are all a part of a much greater whole. Although he
was not a personal fan of things like divination and
the occult, he was definitely a champion of higher
knowledge for the benefit of us all.

For many, Carl Sagan introduced and lead a

movement for the love of learning. He was a
mentor who could take hugely daunting concepts
and make them tangible, relatable and real. This
was his gift as a leader, not of any religion nor of
any nation, but of the human mind. He showed us
how far we can truly reach and taught us that we
are all made of stars.

This is a card that speaks of harmony, balance,

leadership and the good of all. In the image, The
Priest cradles the Earth, the pale blue dot we all
must share. But he welcomes all to explore the

expected, and there is no promise of a safer path,

but they know within their hearts that they
complete each other.

In the image of The Lovers, an angel protects his

beloved. The fawn, with their connection to the
earth, grounds them and keeps them steady. The
mermaid brings harmony, beauty and joy.
Together they are more than they ever could be,
apart, and even if they separate they will be
forever changed.

The Lovers

Love comes in many shapes and forms, has many Element: Air
different faces, and can come for us at any time,
even when we aren’t looking. It touches us far past Ruling Planet: Mercury
the skins we wear; changes us into something new
at our very core. But on some level, it can be
explained as simply as a chemical reaction; the
release of enzymes and hormones in the brain
that stimulate our pleasure sensors. This is why
the constellations of the stars behind them are
not the familiar shapes in our own night sky, but
take the form of oxytocin; the chemical associated
with love.

But love is so much more than reaction. It can give

us something to look forward to every morning,
keep us up long past a perfect sunset and it can
sooth us to sleep in the darkest nights. Love can
create us as easily as it can destroy us. It touches
each person in a unique and unexpected way. In
the card of The Lovers, this trio ignores the
boundaries between worlds, genders and forms
with their devotion to one another as they try to
become something greater. Love is not always

VII
The Chariot

In the card of the Chariot we join again with the

Fool, and her journey has not proved to be easy.
The terrain is harsh and her transportation is well
worn, held together by a wish and a prayer. But
she travels forward, knowing she needs to reach
her destination, no matter how hard the journey
is.

A pause in the midst of motion, the Chariot carries

implications of struggle or hardship. To go the
distance, you have to put the miles behind you,
but sometimes, those miles are rough. Operation
of the Chariot requires reflex, balance and a clear
head; strength of both mind and body. Dangers
may present themselves if you do not take care of
these two very important parts of your being.

The occulted sun marks a significant place of her

journey, and she pauses to watch this enchanting
and strange event. She must control her fear of
the unfamiliar and when she does, she is witness
to great beauty; a gift she will only see once in a
lifetime.

harnessing its power to your benefit. We witness a

young girl pushing her way to freedom with
nothing but her patience and willpower. She has
not just learned to love the creature she was
imprisoned with, but to see that it is not a monster
but a companion. Tamed, he will serve her well on
her journey, only adding to her fortitude.

Strength Ruling Planet: Sun

In the dark of a cage is a beautiful girl, trapped

inside with a lion. But this giant beast, this king of
the jungle, lays beside her at peace, with a crown
of roses in his hair. The lion beside her is not her
enemy but a powerful friend that she has tamed
with the gentleness of her heart. Her troubles are
not with him, but lie far beyond the cage that
confines her.

She is standing proof that gentleness does not

mean weakness. In fact, the card of Strength
represents that of quiet, unstoppable power. The
ability to put your energy to good use, to conquer
the fear that is holding you back so that you may
break free of whatever cage that binds you.

Strength is never where we expect to find it; not in

others, and not in ourselves. We never know
where that deep reservoir is until we need to tap
into it; until we can look past what we’ve been
taught to fear to find where the real enemy is.

Strength’s advice is courage and inner strength.

Literally taming the wild beast inside of you, and

The Hermit has accepted this, and has learned

that they are the only person they need. They
wander the world with their eyes wide open,
looking, learning and bringing what they need.
They enjoy peace in solitude not because they
have shunned the company of others but because
they find truth walking their own path.

If you can do what you can do, that can be

enough. Sometimes the smallest human kindness
can change an entire life. The Hermit will never
walk away from doing the right thing because it
seems too small or insignificant, and they would
never find it beneath them. They bring
thoughtfulness into action, encourage life, an

they can. And it’s enough.
The Hermit

In the wastes of an old world, the land has gone
barren and dry. The only color left seems to
belong to that of the sky, as the constellation Virgo
shines bright in the violet, empty night. But even in
the wastelands, hope can be found, as a
wandering stranger stoops to care for a small but
thriving plant. Its life-giving light is rare and
precious. A simple thing of impossibly great value,
and this man knows that if it is left on its own,
without protection and care, it may wither and die.

The Hermit is a card of humility, maturity and the

discovery of inner self. The ability to see that what
is right is not always easy, and that sometimes, the
only way things will happen is if you take on the
responsibility yourself. But finding comfort with
one’s self is sometimes the hardest journey. We
live in a world that touts self love while
perpetuating self hate: your ideas are wrong, your
body is wrong, your existence is a burden.
Learning that those are hollow lies meant to
control you is sometimes the hardest truth to
accept.

around the Sun. Everything new will someday be

old, and the universe will continue on.

Despite the promise of inevitability, The Wheel has

strong resonance with the idea of fate. The entire
universe may be out of your personal control, but
that doesn’t mean you aren’t exactly where you
need to be. Even the number ten of the Wheel has
a nice rounded sense of completion to it. The
combination of One and Zero, we’ve begun to use
numbers that we have already seen. Numbers we
find at the beginning, that suggest the start of
something new. Their combination may have new
meaning, but they may ring familiar, too.

The Wheel

In the sky there is the Milky Way and the light of Reversed: Bad Luck, Disappointment, Misfortune,
three billion stars. And on the slopes of an old hill, Mishap, Unforeseen Setback
a traveler has made their camp amidst the metal
skeletons of world-changing machines. Old Element: Fire
windmills used to grind wheat into flour. Modern
turbines used to convert motion into energy. All Ruling Planet: Jupiter
around her, young and old coexist. New grass and
old rock. Even her fire that burns bright in her
eyes is infinitesimally young in comparison to the
burning hearts of stars that faintly touch her with
their ancient light.

The Wheel speaks of a world far larger than

yourself. That only time and luck are the true
guardians of fate and no matter where you go…
there you will be. Even if you cheat the game, you
can only play the cards in your hand and the
universe has always had a way of course-
correcting itself, despite your best interventions.

It all comes back around.

The world spins on its axis. The Earth rotates

the direction of logic.

Still, she found a way to express her art through

numbers with her “poetic science” as she called it.
The equation written on her sword are notes
containing the first computer program, meant to
be carried out by machines that wouldn't be
invented for years.

Reversed: Dishonesty, Imbalance, Lack of

Accountability, Legal Flaws, Unfair Treatment

Justice

Universal balance is an unbiased phenomenon. Ruling Planet: Venus

The whole of existence is just balancing an
equation on an unfathomable scale. X must equal
Y for Z to be correct. Objective reason and the
understanding that your immediate actions affect
your future situations, the card of Justice speaks of
harmony, adjustment and consequence. In her
hands Justice carries both a sword and a scale;
one to measure the truth and facts of a situation
and one to do what is necessary. The shape of the
constellation Libra is formed on the computer chip
behind her, another symbol of scales and balance.

Justice doesn’t need an opinion, it must be a path

to find what is right.

For the face of Justice, we were inspired by real-

world mathematician, Ada Lovelace. She was the
creator of the algorithm, and the mother of
computer programming. But this 19th Century
woman was not only a woman in STEM during a
time when women couldn't even vote, she was
also the daughter of the famed poet Lord Byron,
whose mother encouraged her away from the
 MAJOR ARCANA PAGE | 18

And only he will truly be able to understand its

meaning once he’s given himself the time to truly
understand. But patience, waiting, literally hanging
around while the dust settles is sometimes the
best (or only) thing to do. There may not be an
inherent struggle, but suspension is a huge part of
this. He hangs in a limbo between two worlds;
where he is and where he wants to be. He’s almost
there. Just a little more to go.

Element: Water
The Hanged Man

Often thought to correlate to the story of Odin Ruling Planet: Neptune

who hangs himself from the world tree to gain
higher knowledge, the card of the Hanged Man
speaks of self-sacrifice and a shift in perspective.
Here, a young man hangs from the titanic limb
suspended over stardust. The branches seem to
grip him as he reaches across a great and
expansive void for something just beyond his
reach.

From one point of view, he might be reaching

down for something, but we live in a universe of
many dimensions, angles and perspectives, so who
is to say that he is not reaching upwards, inwards,
or sideways?

Only he will ever truly know.

This is something that only he can experience.

That only he can do.

Rather than the marigolds traditionally associated

with the holiday, her crown is made of the same
roses that grow inside her, completing a loop in
the cycle of life.

With Death comes transformation, change and

progression. After all, the sun will rise tomorrow
and bring on a new day. So if yesterday was a bad
one, then let it die with the sun, because
tomorrow can only be better if today comes to an
end. New leaves cannot grow until the old ones
have fallen, and it may be time to let go.

Death Reversed: Loss, Depression, Living Unaware,
Resistance to Change, Unwilling to Let Go
Death; a word synonymous with endings, is not
always an omen of ill. Just as the winter must come Element: Water
before the spring and the sun must set before it

Alchemists of old attempted to turn lead into gold
and were ever seeking answers to some of the
biggest questions in life. Countless hours and
intricate notes devoted by men and women, who

chemistry and medicine were born in archaic
laboratories that combined science, religion, magic
and symbolism on their quest for understanding.

The card, Alchemy, is inspired by adaptation,

creative combinations and the unifying notion of
completely different things coming together to
work as one; the notion that two things that may
be different can also work together in strong and
powerful ways. In the card, we see mixtures of
gases and light spill from vials that swirl into

The Devil, in polite society, is something we have

been encouraged to reject. A symbol of power,
restraint and temptation, we would do well to
remember that desire can also be something to
fear and power can be controlling. It’s easy to get
addicted to the rush of dopamine that floods our
brains when we’re given something that we crave
or that we think we want. But those needs can be
dangerous and selfish, especially when the only
thing you’re fighting against is yourself.

But the Devil can make us doubt. Make us believe

we can’t survive without the things that we’ve
allowed to control us. It gets into our heads, the
chemicals in our brains, and makes us doubt our
own strength.

Here, we see The Devil pushing those who care for

him away, using them to reach what gives him
mindless bliss, without care for the consequences
it may cause to either them or to himself. Caught

There is a serene calmness that seems to emanate

from the Star. A lovely girl who has all the
elements at her command; the sea, the earth and

a very connected place. Symmetrical and brilliant,
there is a constant flow of give and take. She has a
mastery of the fine and delicate balance between
the physical and the subconscious; she knows

The Moon (Luna) is the Earth's only natural

satellite. Although she is only one of many among
the moons discovered in our star system, she is
still our moon. Our one and only.

Known for her regularly changing appearance

across the black and blue of our sky, The Moon is
often seen as a sign of change and a symbol of the
mystery we feel when we stare in the black void of
space. But she is also the comfort we feel as she
lights up the darkness in a chilled and sunless
night. She has the face of a dream and a wise and
gentle intuition of a woman who has traversed the
world.

Here, The Moon is represented by a lovely but

somehow unnerving mermaid presiding over a
surreal landscape full of illusions. Across her
forehead is her third eye suggesting a higher
mystical knowledge, but she is also clad in bones.
And looking into the origins of those bones may
not be recommended. Still, The Moon sits upon
her throne, or is that too simply an illusion, a hoop
she hangs from to make you believe she holds the
moon at her fingertips?

The scale of the universe is a rather baffling thing.

What might seem small from a distance may in fact
be enormous up close. An entire galaxy can fit
inside the eye of a needle if you line them up
correctly and huge things can happen in ways that
may seem insignificant to someone who doesn’t
have the right perspective.

Where the cards of the Major Arcana are

representative of major events in your universe, it
is to the Minor Arcana of the tarot that we look to
show us what is right in front of us, staring us in
the face every day.

Divided into four distinctive suits, the Elements,

Bees, Tides and Stars were all chosen for their
symbolic significance, with each suit consisting of
ten numbered cards and a court of four faces. The
individual suits share common themes, feelings
and ideas within themselves.

The Suit of Elements (related to Wands, Fire,

Clubs) begin with the literal building blocks of the
universe: Hydrogen, Helium, Lithium, Beryllium.
The first ten cards of the Minor Arcana center
their focus on energy, creation, and growth, while
the court carries the weight and value found in

everyday precious materials. All the Elements have a very

fiery and energetic nature to them. They’re about

practically invisible yet capable of being essential

The Suit of Bees (also known as Pentacles, Earth,
Diamonds) is identifiable in honeyed gold and
purple, covered with clean honeycombs and a
queen. Bees are an essential part of our natural
earth-bound world. Tangible, touchable, material
things, the very existence of these wonderful little
pollinators allow us to have the fruits and flowers
of Earth today. A few steps up in the scale of the
universe from the elemental atoms, bees are a
practical, purposeful part of our daily existence.
They are resourceful, natural builders with direct
ties to health and reproduction, and are natural
symbols of productivity and hard work. The Bees
of the Atomic Tarot are a bit more fantastical than
their Earth-bond cousins, as they take their work
to the stars.
The Suit of Tides (also known as Cups, Water,
Hearts) is found by sliding the scale of the
universe a little higher. Tides affect the world on a

they send out to one another. Too much honey and too much
smoke can be a terrible mixture of things.

A hard loss can force you to reconsider what is important in your

Stars is not representative of peace. With five beams of laser-light
and a powerfully reflective mirror, this flower-shaped vessel is

are set on the world. There’s an electric charge in the atmosphere.
Tension builds and it’s every man for himself in times like these.

Where this vessel has come from, how far it has traveled to get
here is not entirely known, but its intentions are menacingly clear.
You know trouble when you see it. Perhaps it’s wiser to keep out
of battles you cannot hope to win. Especially if not everyone is
playing fair.

quite advanced and their journey will take them to see the light of
new stars. New views beyond their wildest imaginings will bid to
them, "Explore. Escape. Find something better."

The Six of Stars carries with it the thrill of travel. A change of

scenery, another place, may be what is best for you. But there are

and final breath of a star that has come to the end of its life.

The explosion will be painful, there’s no doubt about it. But it’s so
much easier if you have someone to share it with. Don’t close

that became so huge, so inflated and unstable that it was doomed
for an inevitable collapse.

Atomic Tarot

CARDS

Ruling over the four suits of the Minor Arcana, the

cards of the Court are not as much
representations of events in life, but rather, the
people in life that fill them. They could be
someone in your life, someone you have yet to
meet, or merely a reflection of your own self. We
all carry pieces of someone else inside us.

There are sixteen members of the Court who

preside over the energetic Elements, realistic
Bees, romantic Tides and idealistic Stars. Four to
each suit. The character windows for these cards
are slightly larger than the rest of the Minor
Arcana, while still maintaining the main elements
of their respective suits.

More commonly known as the Page, Knight, Queen

and King in traditional tarot decks, we wanted the
court of the Atomic Tarot to be a little less
traditional, a little less monarchical in title, so we
chose the Heart, Champion, Luminary and
Shepard for our court titles, though their
meanings are still quite similar.

Hearts (Page) of each suit carry youthful, and

active energy within them. They are inspired and
willing to believe. Champions (Knight) are already

reflections of believers and have things for which they are willing
to fight. Luminaires (Queen) offer guidance and

are Shepherds (King) who watch over and protect
that which is important in this world.

The catalyst. The spark that gets everyone else
going, the Heart of Elements is full of creative
