1. Provide a short introduction to your submission (5%)

2. Explain which chapter of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea applies to all “small
craft” and when you would apply the remaining chapters to such vessels. (10%).

3. Explain in your own words the term “white list”, “grey list” and “black list” with regards to flag state
administration performance tables. Discuss how these tables affect the possibility of port state control
inspection of internationally trading vessels (15%).

4. Discuss why the coating condition is of great importance to a steel small craft constructed with zero
corrosion allowance for hull plating design thickness. Explain how you would deal with a situation where
such a vessel is in dry-dock and you note that the coating is damaged over a 1000x1000mm area on the
bottom plates, but the owner has no intention to repair this.

A. The owner
B. A potential purchaser of the vessel
C. Flag State Administration or their delegated Certifying Authority. (15%)

5. Provide a detailed description in your own words of two methods used in the construction of Fibre
Reinforced Plastic vessels. Include one error which may occur during each method. (10%).

6. A client has advised you that they have purchased a used railway engine for use in their harbour tug.
Discuss two design changes which may be required for this engine to be “marinised” prior to installation,
and why (5%).

7 Explain both the two stroke and four stroke diesel engine cycles for a marine engine. Describe five
major components of a
marine diesel engine, one of which should be the holding down arrangements. (20%).

8 Including a step by step working calculation for your answer, calculate the block coefficient of a non-
propelled barge shaped vessel where:
Submerged volume of the hull is 200m3
LOA =24.00m
LBP=22.00m
Breadth moulded = 5.00m
Draught = 2.50m
Cargo capacity= 100m3
