THEORY AND PROCEDURE

FOR CALCULATON OF
KN VALUES
NAME: A. Manish Kumar
ROLLNO: 319106918066
Lines Plan:
From the Lines Plan using the ordinate values a body plan is constructed. In the
current report ANSYS SpaceClaim 2021 R2 is used. The body plan is shown in the
figure below,

Hydrostatics:
From the Hydrostatics the Draught vs Displacement graph is constructed. In the
current report Microsoft Excel is used. The Graph is shown in the figure below,
Procedure:
1. First the displacement is found at the draught, this is done by putting the value of x
which is 6.8m for the current report, in the equation provided in the graph.
2. Now, an upper and lower limit for the displacement is calculated, the upper limit is
1.10 times the displacement at draught and lower limit is 0.35 times the
displacement at draught for 50 angle of heel.
3. The corresponding values for the initial displacement at 50 are taken as the
Waterlines at the upper and lower limits of the displacement.
4. In the current report, the upper limit is 7.43m and lower limit is 2.60m making an
angle of 50 with the horizontal.
5. Two lines are drawn on the body plan at upper limit and lower limit for a specific
station, the region is divided into 7 equal parts. This process is shown at 5th station
at the lowest Waterline in the figure below.
6. The region is flooded and the areas and centroid of the filled region is noted as
shown in the figure below,

7. The same procedure is done for all the station (i.e., 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6,
7, 8, 8.5, 9, 9.5, 10) for all the 7 Waterlines. With this all the immersed areas of the
hull at 50 is calculated.
8. Now, for the heel angles 100, 150, 200, 250, 300 the upper limit is increased by 3%
for each heel angle and the lower limit is decreased by 3% for each heel angle.
9. For the heel angle 350, 400, 450, 500 the upper limit is increased by 5% for each heel
angle and the lower limit is decreased by 5% for each heel angle.
10. Similar to this 50-heel angle, the immersed areas and centroids are calculated at all
the heel angles from 50 to 500 at 50 intervals.
11. After all the immersed areas and centroids are calculated, at a heel angle for a
Waterline at all the station the net Volume immersed, Horizontal Volumetric
Moment and the Vertical Volumetric Moments are calculated using the Simpsons
formulae.
12. The below figure shows a sample table for this task,
13. The displacement is calculated by multiplying the volume with the density of sea
water (1.025 tonnes/m3).
14. Now the KN values can be determined using the below formulae,

KN = ((Vertical Vol.Mom * sin) + (Horizontal Vol.Mom*cos)) 

 = Displacement.
15. Using the above formulae, the KN values at different Waterlines at specific heel
angles are calculated and the KN values are plotted against the displacements to
obtain the Cross Curves of Stability.
16. The below figure shows the manually drawn graph,
