STAIRCASE PRESSURIZATION CALCULATION:

Design Reference
QCDD Regulations
British Standard BS5588 Part 4:1998

A pressurization system has two modes of operation.

Mode -1 Dectection Phase - To raise a pressure differential in the protection space - stair case by the
required amount when all doors are closed.
Mode -2 Fire fighting phase - To maintain a specified Air velocity (1.0 m/sec) through the open doors in to
the fire floor with various other doors open.

Staircase- 1
Leakage Area Calculations:

Air leakage Area through doors

Number of single leaf door opening in to pressurized space = 2 Nos
Number of single leaf door opening outwards from a pressurized space = 1 Nos
Number of double leaf door opening in to pressurized space = 14 Nos
Leakage Area through single leaf door opening into a pressurized space = 0.01 M2
( Reference Table D.1 BS 5588)
2
Leakage Area through single leaf door opening outwards from a pressurized space = 0.02 M
( Reference Table D.1 BS 5588)
2
Leakage Area areathrough double leaf door opening outwards from a pressurized space = 0.03 M
( Reference Table D.1 BS 5588)

2
Air leakage Area through all single leaf doors opening into a pressurized space = 0.02 M
2
Air leakage Area through all single leaf doors opening outwards from a pressurized space = 0.02 M
2
Air leakage Area through all double leaf doors opening into a pressurized space = 0.42 M

Air leakage Area through windows

Number of windows (pivoted and weather stripped) W2 (Perimeter - 4.40 m) = 2 Nos

2
Leakage Area through pivoted and weather stripped window per m length = 3.60E-05 M
( Reference Table D.2 BS 5588)

2
Air leakage Area through all windows = 0.0003 M

Air leakage Area through walls.

2
Exterior wall area of stair wall (towards the non pressurised area) = 548 M
2
Internal wall area of stair wall (towards the pressurised lobby) = 96 M

2
Leakage Area through exterior stair walls ( Tight wall tightness ) per sq. meter = 7.00E-05 M
( Reference Table D.3 BS 5588)
2
Leakage Area through internal stair walls ( Tight wall tightness ) per sq. meter = 1.40E-05 M
( Reference Table D.3 BS 5588)

2
Air leakage Area through exterior stair wall = 0.038 M
2
Air leakage Area through internal stair wall = 0.001 M
2
Total leakage Area (Door + window + wall) = 0.500 M

As per QCDD the Stairwell pressurisation system required to maintain minimum 25 Pa pressure
1
difference between stairwell and the occupant area (Lobby) for buildings that are non-sprinklered.

Considering lobby area to be maintained at 12.5 Pa pressuse difference

To calculate the staircase pressurisation we required to maintain 37.5 Pa with all doors closed.
The formula for doing the calculation of supply air volume
1/n
Q = 0.83 A E P
3
Where Q= Voume of air required (M / Sec)
AE = Leakage area from the space (M 2 )
P= Pressure differential (Pa) ( 37.5 Pa)
n= Leakage factor (For door n=2 & window cracks n =1.6)

1/2 3
There fore, Q= 0.83 x 0.500 x 37.5 = 2.541 M /Sec

Velocity Check Q=AxV

V= 0.508282694 m/s

2 To calculate air flow through open fire floor door

2
Area of double leaf door = (2.0 x 2.50 = 5.0sq.mt) = 5.000 M
Velocity to be maintained across door = 1.000 m/sec
3
Q=AXV = 5.000 M /Sec

3
Total Airflow from calculation 1 and 2 = 7.541 M /Sec

Velocity Check Q=AxV

V= 1.508282694 m/s

Lift Lobby Pressurisation ( 12.5 Pa pressure difference)

One wall adjoins the pressurised space so there will not be any leakage where they have common wall

Leakage through walls:

a Typical From 1st to 5th floor inlcuding lower roof:

The length of lobby walls not adjoining a protected space = 1.936+5.13+1.377+3.66 m = 12.103 M

leakage area through walls = 12.103 x 3.6 x 0.14 x 10 ^-4 = 0.001 M

2
Total Leakage Area from doors in the lobby = .06+.06+.015 = 0.135 M
1/2 3
Air supply to typical floor lobby = 0.83 x.135 x12.5 = 0.396 M /Sec
3
Total Air supply for all floors from 1st to 5th including lower roof = 2.3769394 M /Sec

b Ground Floor
The length of lobby walls not adjoining a protected space = 1.936+5.13+1.377+3.66+1.54+1.54 m = 15.183 M

leakage area through walls = 15.183 x 3.6 x 0.14 x 10 ^-4 = 0.001 M

2

2
Total Leakage Area from doors in the lobby = .06+.06+.015+.02+.02 = 0.175 M
