2. Design of U-Trough At 2.6m Height
1.1 General:
This Design Note presents the structural design of R.C. U- trough
section with clear size of 5.0m x 2.6m proposed to be utilized as
approach to the subway This approach portion of the subway is
proposed to be constructed cast-in-situ with 1:18 slope longitudinally.
1.2 Analysis:
The U trough portion is modeled as a plane frame structure of 1.0m
length with c/c dimensions in STAAD. Loads corresponding to these
widths are evaluated and structure is analyzed. Since the underpass is
fully resting on the soil, discrete spring supports are provided for the
base slab to model the earth pressure to simulate the base support
condition. Soil springs are calculated based on a sub-grade modulus of
the soil considering the safe bearing capacity of 10 t/sqm.
The box is analyzed for loads and appropriate combinations as defined
in the below sections and critical case is adopted for the design. The
analysis is carried out using STAAD pro.

STAAD INPUT FILES
1.0 Introduction
1.1 General:
Approach portion of the underpass at Bhojaraj nagar is proposed with
RC U-trough on raft foundations. Soil investigation Report has
recommended for raft foundations with 10t/sqm. Subsequently, as
Railways are adopting pile foundations with 1.0m dia. for the portion
below railway limits, it was decided by Corporation authorities to adopt
pile foundations for approach portion also. Hence U-trough for its full
length has been founded on 1.0m dia piles.
This Design Note presents the structural design of piles.
1.2 Analysis:
The U trough portion is modeled as a plane frame structure of 3.0m
length with c/c dimensions in STAAD. Loads corresponding to these
widths are evaluated and structure is analyzed. Since the underpass is
fully resting on piles at 3.0m spacing (max.), piles are modeled as
structural members upto fixity depth to simulate support condition.
The box is analyzed for loads and appropriate combinations as defined
in the earlier sections and critical case is adopted for the design. The
analysis is carried out using STAAD pro.
As stated above in #1.2 above all the loads and load combinations are
considered as per the analysis submitted earlier. However loads
corresponding to 3.0m length ( max. influence area for each pile) have been
considered to arrive at the max./min. pile forces.
3.0 Design Forces in piles:
Using all possible load combinations, pile loads are arrived. The loads on
piles are as tabulated below:
A) For U-Box at Max. height
Vertical Force Hor. Force

34 203 32 bottom -43.146 2.257 -5.903
34 202 32 bottom -43.146 3.178 -8.305
The members are designed for highlighted governing forces as per IRC-21-
2000. The design of these members is presented in the following sections.
4.0. Design of pile:
Design of pile has been carried out using an in-house program. Output for the same has been provided in
the section below:
