INTRODUCTION

HS3400 - HYDRAULIC DRIVE

The Brandt HS3400 centrifuge is a high speed/high G-force decanting type unit
utilised for the continuous controlled removal of solids from contaminated fluids. The
functions of solids sedimentation, separation and draining are all combined in the
Brandt HS3400 centrifuge.

This manual contains information and instructions for safe operation, installation,
start up and maintenance of the Brandt HS3400 centrifuge and ancillary equipment.
All sections of this manual should be read and understood before attempting to
operate or service the equipment. As this is a high speed machine which can
generate forces in excess of 3000G particular emphasis should be given to the
safety section contained within this manual.

It is strongly recommended that Brandt Engineer be in attendance during installation,

start up and commissioning phases. This Engineer will give full training instructions
in operation, application and maintenance of HS3400 centrifuge which, if followed
should ensure long, trouble-free operation of unit.

If in any doubt regarding safety or process suitability of HS3400 please contact any
of the Brandt service centres referenced inside front cover of this manual. Brandt
have a team of experienced Service Engineers who are normally available on a 24
hour call out basis should further assistance be required.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

STUDY THIS SECTION CAREFULLY BEFORE ATTEMPTING START UP,

OPERATION, REPAIRS OR MAINTENANCE TO CENTRIFUGE
UNSAFE PRACTICES CAN CAUSE CONDITIONS HAZARDOUS TO
PERSONNEL AND EQUIPMENT

1. Do not remove guards or attempt to repair any rotating parts unless power is
safely isolated and machine is at rest.

2. Adequate walkways and guardrails should be installed around machine if

mounted in elevated position.

3. Do not operate centrifuge until machine is securely mounted and assembled

correctly.

4. Do not operate centrifuge unless all guards are securely fitted and bowl lid is
bolted in position.

5. Do not attempt to rotate centrifuge by pulling on drive belts as fingers are

easily trapped.

6. Always use recommended tools and lifting appliances detailed in this manual
when attempting repairs, assembly or dismantling of centrifuge or its
components.

7. Never mechanically or otherwise block the tripping action of the torque

overload mechanism.

8. Never attempt to decelerate the rotating assembly by using wooden blocks or

other braking devices. Severe equipment and/or personnel damage can
occur.

9. Do not operate the centrifuge if unusual noise or vibration exists - consult

Brandt if in any doubt.

10. If undertaking electric welding on any part of the centrifuge ensure that no
earthing current passes through the bearings.

11. Do not operate HS3400 centrifuge until start-up and shutdown procedures are
fully understood.

12. Do not attempt to use the centrifuge for applications other than that stated in
the purchase order. Do not exceed maximum recommended speeds or
process specific gravity stated on nameplate.

13. Do not interchange bowl parts since specific parts are balanced as a unit.

034-900-M01
2-1
BRANDT HS3400 VSD HIGH SPEED CENTRIFUGE
OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL

14. Follow recommended oil level check procedure and recommended greasing
procedures and schedules.

15. Severe damage to equipment can be caused by running in wrong direction.

Centrifuge should always rotate in clockwise direction when viewed on driven
pulley.

16. Corrosion, Erosion & Pitting of Centrifuge Equipment

a. To ensure a high factor of safety under operating conditions, high

speed centrifugal equipment, manufactured by Brandt, is designed after a
careful stress analysis has been made of highly stressed parts. A thorough
control of metallurgical properties is maintained throughout manufacture and
all material is warranted as free from defects at time of shipment. The
equipment is designed and built for a long useful life.

b. It should be recognised, that equipment subjected to severe erosive or

corrosive environments may deteriorate over a period of time, depending upon
the severity of exposure and/or possible misuse. Users of high speed
centrifugal equipment should be aware of this fact and also that extremely
high forces are brought into play when their equipment is in operation. Any
weakening of highly stressed members by misuse, erosion, corrosion,
chemical pitting or stress cracking must be guarded against to prevent
possible metal failure.

c. In the interest of longer and safer operation of customer equipment,

Brandt recommends that the customer maintain a periodic (monthly)
inspection on highly stressed moving parts such as bowls, shaft, spindles etc,
which are subjected to corrosive or erosive wear.

d. The following points should be noted and the recommended action

taken.

1. Do not operate equipment when:

a. Holes are worn through moving parts.

b. Grooves greater then 1.5mm deep are worn in moving parts.
c. Evidence of cracks is present in moving parts.
d. Chemical pitting of 1.5mm depth or greater is present on moving parts.

2. Chemical Pitting Observed

All cases of chemical pitting, even under 1.5mm depth, should be watched
carefully. This action is almost always due to the breakdown of the passive
film on stainless bowl shell walls, in the presence of chlorides. This can occur
under heel cake that has not been cleaned from the bowl wall. High
temperature and high acidity accelerate the action.

UNIT DESCRIPTION

MAIN COMPONENTS

The Brandt HS3400 centrifuge consists of the following units and assemblies which
are identified in the general assembly drawings.

1. Bowl Assembly

This assembly is made up of four main components these being cylindrical

and tapered bowl sections and front and rear hubs. The rear hub is fitted with a V-
belt pulley which rotates the complete assembly about its horizontal axis. The rear
hub is fitted at the tapered (or beach) end of the bowl and provides 360o discharge
of solids.

The front hub is fitted with adjustable dam plates through which the clarified
liquor discharges and which regulate the pond depth of slurry within the bowl. The
outboard ends of the hubs are mounted in pillow blocks which in turn are fixed to the
main frame.

2. Conveyor Assembly

This unit is enclosed within the bowl assembly and is driven through the
hollow front hub by the splined output shaft of the gearbox. Conveyor is rotated
about the same horizontal axis and in the same direction as the bowl but at a slightly
lower speed.

The function of the conveyor is to scroll sedimented solids to the rear end of
the bowl and discharge these solids through the solids discharge porting at the
tapered end of the bowl. Conveyors are normally supplied with hard surfacing to
minimise wear on the flights.

3. Gearbox Assembly

This unit consists of a two stage epicyclic gearbox which is bolted directly to
the front hub of the bowl assembly. Differential drive is transmitted to the conveyor
via a splined output shaft in same direction of rotation as the bowl with a ratio of 51
turns of conveyor to 52 turns of bowl.

Gearbox reaction torque is transmitted via sun gear shaft protruding from
outer end of gearbox to a torque control assembly mounted on centrifuge frame.

MAIN COMPONENTS (continued

4. Torque Control Assembly

This assembly, bolted to the centrifuge main frame provides the reaction force
to the sun gear torque and automatically trips at preset value in event of transmission
overload.

In event of overload and subsequent tripping of this device conveyor and bowl
will rotate at same speed. A limit switch fitted to this assembly detects trip condition,
automatically stops both pump and centrifuge drive motors and provides visible and
audible alarms within control panel to indicate overload condition.

5. Casing Assembly

This unit encloses the bowl and directs the clarified liquid and solids streams
to two separate outlets positioned in lower section of casing. Casing is fitted with
internal baffles to ensure both streams remain segregated. The top half of the
casing is hinged to allow easy access to the bowl for inspection and maintenance
purposes. In operation a gasket is fitted between lid and lower casing and both parts
are securely bolted together.

6. Main Frame

This rigid fabricated unit supports both the main bearings and casing
assembly and is in turn bolted to the subframe. Accurate machining of bearing
locations ensures that rotating assemblies can be interchanged without any need for
shimming or any other adjustments.

7. Sub Frame

This unit carries the main frame and drive assembly. Sub frame has five
shock mounts fitted to underside which can be bolted directly to prepared foundation
for permanent installation or left bolted to transportation frame for mobile
installations. Fixed links are provided between sub frame and transportation frame
which are utilised during lifting and shipping of unit to prevent damage to shock
mounts.

8. Drive System

a) Power Pack

This is a self-contained unit which can be fitted on existing skids in most

cases. An axial piston variable displacement pump driven by a 30kw, 1750
rpm motor is used to provide power to the hydraulic drive motor.

The pump is provided with a pressure override to provide "soft" start for motor and to
protect the electric motor from overload. No fluid coupling is required. A
simple mechanical linkage system - via a vernier type control cable, is
connected to the pump hydro - mechanical, servo displacement control to
maintain desired speed. No other adjustments are necessary.

b) Hydraulic Drive

This consists of an axial piston fixed displacement motor close coupled to a

twin bearing layshaft which is fitted with a standard belt pulley. The motor and
layshaft are mounted on a common base having same mounting dimensions
as existing electric motor.

c) Tachometer

Inside an Ex(d) enclosure behind a glass facia which allows easy

viewing of the tachometer The tachometer is mounted. Pulses to the
tachometer are sent via a proximity sensor which picks up from the gearbox
filling plug as it passes the sensor head thus giving very accurate indication of
bowl rpm. This speed sensor also controls interlock and shutdown functions
which inhibit pump starting below 1500 rpm and initiate pump and centrifuge
shutdown should bowl speed rise above 4000 rpm.

DRIVE SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

The Brandt HS3400 Centrifuge supplied with a hydraulic drive will give infinite speed
control from 1500 rpm to 4000 rpm, (1500 rpm minimum speed must be achieved
before Seepex pump will start).

A fixed displacement axial piston motor is used to drive the centrifuge via V-belt
drive.

Hydraulic power is provided (via a closed loop hydraulic circuit) by a variable

displacement axial piston pump with swashplate controlled by a manual vernier
adjustment).

Pump is also fitted with an override system to prevent motor stall and to provide 'soft
start' of centrifuge without using a fluid coupling.

For information, listed below, is the main operating characteristics for the Eaton
Hydrostatic Transmission utilised by Brandt.

CHARGE PUMP PRESSURE

Charge pressure is provided by a small gear pump mounted to the main pump and
driven by a common shaft.

The charge system has four duties:-

a) To compensate for leakage in pump and motor.

b) To ensure minimum pressure in the main system.

c) To deliver oil flow to control system (e.g. pump servo cylinders).

d) To continuously replenish the oil in the main system with oil from the reservoir.

In the neutral position, oil is pumped from the charge pump through the two check
valves in the main system. When the set pressure of the preset charge pump relief
valve is exceeded, oil flows through the valve to the pump housing and reservoir.

When the main system is operating, oil is pumped into the low pressure line through
one of the two check valves to compensate for leakage and to replenish from the
reservoir the oil which leaves the main system through the shuttle on the motor valve
block.

PURGE RELIEF VALVE PRESSURE

The preset relief valve is built into the motor manifold block and is normally set at 2
to 4 bar, lower than the charge pump pressure relief valve.

The shuttle valve, built into the motor manifold block, ensures that a quantity of hot
oil leaves the low pressure sides to run through the surge valve via motor and pump
housing to the reservoir.

PRESSURE OVERRIDE SETTING

This control valve is sandwiched between servo control valve and pump body on
Eaton units.

This is a pressure limiting valve and is controlled by presure in the high pressure line.
If the pressure in the high pressure line exceeds the set value, the action of the
pressure limiting valve moves the pump swashplate back towards neutral (i.e.
reducing flow) to a position corresponding to a lower oil flow than the operator has
set for the pump. It also provides controlled acceleration of centrifuge bowl and
minimises wear on drive belts during start up.

HYDRAULIC SYSTEM DESCRIPTION(continued)

HIGH PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE

This valve is preset and is built into the motor manifold block.

Should a rise in pressure occur and pressure override fails to function, this valve will
dump system flow from H.P. line to L.P., by-passing motor.

LOW PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE

This valve is built into the motor manifold block and is used to 'brake' the bowl when
speed is being decreased or when unit is being shutdown.

Due to large flow across this valve during decelleration pressure gauge will show up
to 50% more pressure than nominal pressure setting of valve.
NOTES:
a) All pressure settings, with the exception of pressure override, are factory
preset and cannot be adjusted in field without change of spring, and/or spacers.

b) Fairly accurate pressure override setting can be observed during start up or

accelerate of bowl to higher speeds.
Should setting be lower than those tabulated, these can be reset by loosening lock
nut on pressure override valve and adjusting allen screw as required, retightening
lock nut after adjustment.

c) Under heavy loading conditions, override setting can be increased by up to

20% providing bowl speeds are less than 3000 rpm. Pressure override setting
should always be at least 10 to 15 percent below main line H.P. relief valve settings
(i.e. maximum override setting of 185 bar on Eaton units).

d) On start-up of hydraulic pump, charge pump pressure gauge will show setting
of charge pressure relief valve.
On moving swashplate from neutral position, this gauge reading will decrease,
showing setting of purge relief valve and will continue to show this setting until pump
swashplate returned to neutral position.

e) Low pressure line gauge will show only charge pressure or purge pressure as
above, unless bowl is slowing down.

f) Filter flow is approximately 32L/Min through a 10 micron element. Under

clean operating conditions, filter indicator should indicate clean condition and
vacuum gauge should not exceed 0.15 bar (maybe high, up to 0.25 bar at start-up
when oil is cold). Under no circumstances should unit be run with vacuum pressure
greater than 0.5 bar.

CHARGING PUMP

Unless requested otherwise charging pump assembly provided by Brandt is a

Seepex
35-6LBN eccentric screw pump driven by a 7.5kw electric motor via a Stober variable
speed gearbox.

If pump is not supplied by Brandt we strongly recommend use of variable speed

eccentric screw pumps as other types of pumps may result in less efficient
separation within centrifuge. e.g. a centrifugal pump normally has to have flow
regulated by valves which results in increased turbulence within casing and causes
further breakdown of particles which centrifuge may not be able to remove.

The 35-6LBN pump is available with selection of output gears to provide variation of
speed and feed range. The pump variation supplied can be identified from the
gearbox part number.

Maximum feed rate to the centrifuge is dependent on many variables including liquid
and solids properties into unit and desired output properties of end products in terms
of separation efficiency, dryness etc.

In addition, centrifuge settings in terms of bowl speed, differential speed and pond
depth will also affect the ultimate optimum feed rate.

The following table provides some information on expected throughputs. Figures in

this table have for the most part been derived from separation of drilled solids from
drilling mud in oil and gas well drilling operations. Where solids concentration is low
these figures can increase by up to 50%.

4000 3180 27 4 - -

As noted above, throughput and product quality can also be affected by pond depth
of slurry in bowl which is varied by change out of ring dams. Some common sizes of
ring dams together with corresponding pond depth and dry beach length are
tabulated here under.

INSTALLATION
TRANSPORTATION & HANDLING

a. The equipment is packaged to afford protection from rust and corrosion for a
period of twelve months if stored indoors.

b. If the equipment is not to be installed immediately, Brandt strongly

recommends that it be stored in the original factory packing.

c. If the equipment is to be used for only short periods of time necessitating

prolonged shutdown, e.g. as with seasonal operation; if it must be uncrated
and unused for any reason; if it will be exposed to outside elements for any
period of time, protective measures must be taken.

d. Each piece of equipment should be carefully inspected on arrival and any

damage should be reported promptly.

UNPACKING THE CENTRIFUGE

The centrifuge may be shipped completely assembled or with the rotating assembly
removed and packed separately. In either situation, carefully unpack the equipment
and ensure that no damage is sustained. The rotating assembly should be handled
with particular care to avoid damaging any of the surfaces (see Component Lifting
Procedures).

MOUNTING OF CENTRIFUGE

When selecting a location for the centrifuge, the following basic requirements should
be considered.

a. The foundation for the frame/sub base and motor should be level and capable
of supporting the entire weight of the centrifuge (see 'Frame Installation').

b. Sufficient headroom must be available to allow the rotating assembly to be

lifted from the frame with the aid of a suitable hoist of 1000kg (1 ton) capacity
(see Section 12 for General Arrangements drawing for overall dimensions and
necessary clearances). It must be possible to position the hoist so that the
centre line of the hook can traverse the longitudinal centre line of the bowl
(see Figure 4A).

c. Sufficient clear floor space or walkway must be provided around the centrifuge
to allow easy manipulation and setting down of components and assemblies
when removed from the machine; this is particularly important where two or
more units are group installed. Space should also be provided for
disassembling and cleaning at each end of the machine for removal of the
feed tube and gearbox.

FRAME INSTALLATION

a. The machine can be mounted on a concrete floor, a concrete pedestal or a

structural steel support. For permanent installations, it is recommended that a
composite foundation of concrete and structural steel be used; this will provide
greater strength and will aid noise suppression. It is nevertheless essential
that a sub base and vibration isolators be used between the centrifuge frame
and the foundation.

b. Note: Transportation base provided may be used as a mounting base.

c. The foundation must be carefully levelled to within ± 3.0 mm (1/8").

d. Set the bolts for securing the vibration mounts to the foundation as shown on
the installation drawing for specific contract. If a concrete foundation is used,
grout the bolts in place and allow the grout to harden thoroughly.

e. Install the vibration mounts and level the top surface to within ± .8 mm (1/32")
ie, 1.6 mm (1/16") total, corner to corner, using an engineer's level.

f. Install the centrifuge complete with its sub base on the vibration mounts and
secure with nuts and washers.

Caution: If the frame and sub base are not level to within the limits stated
above, distortion will be introduced into the frame which may
cause rubbing of the bowl and casing, rubbing of the feed tube
against the rotating assembly, and bearing failure.

Note: Where centrifuge has been supplied complete with transportation base above
procedures have already been carried out in relation to that base, therefore
machine can be mounted via transportation base to a level foundation as per
paragraph (b) see General Arrangement in Section 12.

f. After installation of the complete machine, remove the Shipping Cradles

(where fitted) from the bowl/casing (see Figure 4B) and secure the pillow
blocks to the frame as described under 'Install Rotating Assembly' (see Index).

Important Note: Remove hold down brackets 034-803-000 painted yellow

after installation.

REMOVE ROTATING ASSEMBLY FOR MACHINE INSTALLATION

If the HS3400 has been delivered as a complete unit and if handling equipment
capable of lifting the weight of the complete machine is not available, the rotating
assembly may be removed to reduce the overall weight; this may be achieved as
described in the 'Repair & Overhaul' section under 'Remove Rotating Assembly' (see
Index) after removal of shipping cradles from the bowl/casing.

Note: The shipping cradles are installed to prevent damage to the main bearings
during transit.

RE-INSTALL ROTATING ASSEMBLY

Re-install as described in the 'Repair & Overhaul' section under 'Install Rotating
Assembly' (see Index).

Note: The instructions given under the heading 'Remove Rotating Assembly' and
'Install Rotating Assembly' are mainly applicable to maintenance operations,
therefore, instructions such as 'Shut off Power' will not apply unless the motor has
been connected to the electrical supply.

FIGURE 4B

INSTALL DRIVE BELTS

034-900-M01
4-4
BRANDT HS3400 VSD HIGH SPEED CENTRIFUGE
OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL

After installing and/or re-securing the rotating assembly into the frame and prior to
fitting the feed tube, install the drive belts.

a. Ensure the motor pulley and centrifuge pulley has not sustained nicks or burrs
during handling. Also check that the pulleys have not been contaminated with
dirt, oil or rust etc, all of which can damage drive belts; check the alignment of
the pulley by holding a straight edge against the pulley outer faces (see Figure
4C); any evidence of pulley wobble will make pulley alignment impossible.

b. Ensure that the drive belts are clean, dry and in good condition. If belts have
been contaminated by grease or oil, clean thoroughly with a suitable non
flammable cleaning agent.

c. Each belt has a 'code' allocated by the manufacturer. It is inadvisable to mix

belts of different codes, or to mix new belts with old belts.

d. Install belts on the motor and centrifuge pulleys and turn the belt adjusting
screw(s) in the appropriate direction (see Figure 4D).

To achieve correct belt adjustment:-

i. Ensure that both pulleys are in alignment

ii. Measure the span in metres or inches

iii. Adjust the tension in the belts to permit 16 mm deflection per metre
(1/64" deflection per inch) of span, measured at the centre of the span
of each belt, when a force of 1.5 to 2.0 kg (3.3 to 4.4 lbf) is applied at
90o to each belt by a hand held scale (see Figure 4E).

Note: There will normally be a drop in belt tension during the first 10 to 12 hours of
operation. During this run-in period, the belts tend to seat fully into the grooves of
the pulley and the initial stretch takes place. After the first 10 to 12 hours of running,
the drive should be stopped and another check made for correct tension.

INSTALL FEED TUBE

a. Remove the four screws securing the feed tube clamping cap to feed tube
bracket (see Figure 4F), and withdraw the cap. Ensure that the feed tube
clamping surfaces are thoroughly cleaned.

Note
The feed tube bracket and its clamping cap are both marked with matching
alignment numbers or marks on the face or side of the bracket - when refitting
the cap these numbers or marks must coincide.

b. Insert the feed tube into the bowl until the collar on the tube contacts the face
of the bracket.

c. Assemble the clamping cap to the feed tube bracket ensuring screw holes are
aligned. Insert the four fixing screws and tighten evenly so that the clearance
between the cap and the bracket is even on both sides of the tube.

d. Install the belt guard and secure to the frame. (See General Arrangement).

HOOK-UP OF FEED, SOLIDS & EFFLUENT LINES

034-900-M01
4-7
BRANDT HS3400 VSD HIGH SPEED CENTRIFUGE
OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL

a. Feed Line - The feed line from the pump should always be connected to the
end of the feed tube by means of a flexible hose. Brandt can provide hose
adaptor for end of feed tube if required.

Note - Never connect feed line to feed tube using rigid pipe. Also do not hang
undue weight on feed tube inlet as either of these conditions may deflect the
inner end of the tube and cause rubbing against the inside of the conveyor
resulting in premature failure of feed tube.

When possible a valve tee-piece should be inserted in pump suction or feed

line to allow flushing of feed line, bowl and conveyor prior to any prolonged
shutdowns of system.

b. Solids Discharge - Any chute or adaptor hung off the rectangular solids
discharge flange should not weigh more than 50 kgs. Brandt can provide an
adaptor for this flange to use in conjunction with a tundish or sloping chute.

Alternatively a flexible lightweight bellows can be connected directly into a

conveyor or chute. Any sloping gravity chute mating up to outlet adaptor
should be inclined at steepest possible angle to prevent build up of solids on
chute which can lead to solids packing off inside centrifuge and shutdown of
centrifuge through overload.

When possible a line should be connected to centrifuge casing flushing point

provided to assist on the removal of solids from both casing and solids
removal chute.

c. Effluent Line - As for solids discharge flange, maximum weight hanging from
liquid discharge flange should be less than 50 kgs. Connection from this
discharge point should be made into discharge line by tundish or flexible
connection. Brandt recommend 6" (150mm) discharge line for single
centrifuge discharged and 8" (200m) discharge line for dual centrifuge
installation.

Arrange for a fall of 20mm/metre length of discharge piping.

ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION

a. Ensure that the correct size pulleys are fitted to motor and centrifuge.

Warning: Never start the motor without the belt and gearbox guards and
upper casing securely in place.

Caution: Before attempting to start the centrifuge, ensure that the bowl
rotates freely; that the pillow blocks or bearing clamps are securely
attached to the frame and that the centrifuge is securely mounted.

b. Make temporary wiring connections to the motor at first, and momentarily start
the motor to ensure that the motor fan rotates in clockwise direction when
viewed from the cowl end of the motor.

c. When the direction of rotation is correct, make permanent connections to the

motor and starter in accordance with the wiring diagram supplied. Select wire
sizes in accordance with local electrical codes.

d. When using a Brandt supplied control panel make connections to supply,

main drive motor, pump motor, pump motor and torque switch as per wiring
diagram provided.

e. All interlocks, alarms, etc. Necessary for safe start up, operation and
shutdown are incorporated within this panel.

Note - In wet and/or humid atmospheres it is recommended that electric motor anti-
condensation heaters be wired back to panel. Provided power is left on to
main control panel, heaters will be activated when motors are not being run.

PUMP INSTALLATION

f. Whenever possible, variable positive displacement eccentric screw pumps

(Seepex or similar) should be sited so as to have flooded suction. (i.e. pump
suction to be below feed slurry level).

g. Where this is not possible and pump has to be sited above tank level, suction
line should be fitted with priming point and foot valve should be fitted to end of
suction hose.

h. When fitting rigid suction and feed lines to pump ensure that undue stresses
are not induced in casing due to pipe misalignment.

i. When pump is installed out of sight of centrifuge or control panel, it is

recommended that "stop" push button be fitted local to pump for use in
emergencies.

j. Caution Never attempt to run pump dry even for short periods as severe
damage will occur to rotor, stator or both.

OPERATION

SPEED, FEED & POND DEPTH ADJUSTMENT

1. SPEED ADJUSTMENT

The reason for changing speed is to modify the G-force imparted to the slurry
in the centrifuge - generally increasing speed will improve clarification of
effluent and dryness of solids.

However, offset against operating at high speed is lower throughput and

higher wear rates and subsequent maintenance cost. For example, doubling
the speed of the centrifuge will increase the g-force by a factor of 4, will
increase the wear rate by a factor of 8 and lower maximum throughput by up
to 50%.

G-force for any decanting centrifuge at any given speed can be calculated as
follows:-

G = .0000142 x (RPM)2 x bowl diameter (inches)

for HS3400 G = .0001988 x (RPM)2

NOTE: It is very important that max centrifuge design speed for any
particular slurry S.G. is not exceeded. Refer to nameplate on
machine or purchase order acknowledgement for specified duties.

Also refer to "operating data" in section 3 of this manual (Unit Description -

Technical Details) for formula to determine maximum bowl speed. If in any
doubt please refer to Brandt for advice.

OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL

SPEED ADJUSTMENT

The Brandt HS 3400 Centrifuge supplied with a hydraulic drive will give infinite speed
adjustment from 1500 RPM to 4000 RPM. (1500 RPM minimum speed must be
achieved before Seepex pump will start).

To adjust speed simply turn the vernier control knob until the required speed is
shown on the speed indicator located in the monitoring panel. (See figure 5A.

FIGURE 5A

034-900-M01

BRANDT HS3400 VSD HIGH SPEED CENTRIFUGE
OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL

2. FEED ADJUSTMENT

If using Seepex pump supplied by Brandt, feed adjustment is achieved by rotation of

handwheel mounted on side of Stober gearbox.

A table listing pump speeds and feeds for various combinations of gearbox and
electrical supply is provided in Section 3 of this manual under Unit Description -
Charging Pump details.

In some case, especially when processing slurries with high specific gravity,
minimum pump feed may be in excess of centrifuge capacity. Under these
circumstances a tee-piece should be fitted in pump delivery line with shut off valve to
allow proportion of feed volume to be bypassed and returned to suction tank.

3. POND DEPTH (See Figs 5A & 5B)

The degree of sedimentation which takes place in the centrifuge bowl for any specific
application is a function of centrifugal force applied and the average retention time of
the liquid phase in the bowl.

Centrifugal force changes are effected by changes to speed while retention time
changes can be achieved by either adjustment of feed rate or by altering volume of
liquid in bowl.

Volume of liquid in the bowl can be altered by regulating the pond depth within the
bowl. Refer to table in Section 3 of this manual under Unit Description - Technical
Details for ring dam sizes available and corresponding pond depths and dry beach
lengths. Normally maximum clarification is achieved at deep pond depth although
there are special cases where the reverse is the result. Deep pond depths also
result in wetter solids and reduces scrolling torque levels.

The optimum pond depth for each application can only be determined by analysis of
results. However, as a general rule of thumb:-

a. If maximum clarification of liquid phase is of prime importance and the

moisture free content of solids discharge is secondary, the deepest pond
setting should be used.

b. If maximum dryness of the solids discharge is of prime importance, the

shallowest pond setting should be used.

OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL

3. POND DEPTH ADJUSTMENT - (Cont'd)

To change pond depths proceed as follows: -

a. Shut off power to machine, ensure bowl has stopped rotating and open upper
casing lid.

b. Remove each of the four dams, gaskets, retainer and securing screws from
the front hub.

c. Retain all sets of 4 dam plates together for future use by wiring or typing
through screw holes.
d. Note1: Each dam plate is marked with a number, which corresponds with the
inside diameter of the cylindrical pond formed when the bowl is rotating.
e. Note2: Dam plates of different numbers must not be mixed on the same bowl.

f. Select a set of dam plates that will provide the requisite pond depth and fit in
the same manner and position as the extracted set.

g. Check that both sets of casing gasket are in place, close the upper casing and
secure with screws.

Machine can now be restarted.

FIGURE 5B FIGURE 5C

SHUT DOWN PROCEDURE

a. Turn variable speed control on pump to lowest setting and press "Pump Stop"
button on control panel.
NOTE Stop buttons on Brandt control panels are of the "Stay-Put" type and need to
be manually released before function can be restarted.

b. If further slurry is to be processed through centrifuge within short period,

centrifuge can be left running with no detrimental effects until such time as
pump is restarted.
NOTE In many circumstances it is less harmful to leave centrifuge running
continuously rather than switch on and off several times per day.

c. If centrifuge is to be shutdown even for relatively short periods it is desirable to

continue running for 10 to 15 minutes after pump shutdown prior to stopping
unit.

d. If centrifuge is to be shutdown for periods longer than 24 hours pump and

delivery lines should be flushed through to remove solids in lines.
NOTE Some processes may require flushing through for shutdown periods much
shorter than this.

e. Slow centrifuge bowl by screwing vernier cable fully clockwise.

f. Press centrifuge stop button.

g. Switch off water flush to solid discharge (if fitted).

h. If centrifuge is to be shutdown for periods longer then 72 hours upper casing

should be opened and all traces of solids and slurry washed out of upper and
lower casing sections. This should be done in addition to pump and delivery
line flushing referred to in previous paragraph.

i. If centrifuge is to be shut down for periods of 4 weeks or more, consideration

should be given to refitting shipping cradles (referred to in section 4 of this
manual) to prevent damage to bearings. If this is not possible, bowl and
motor needs to be rotated periodically either manually or by applying power to
motor.

NOTE Following shutdown power should be left on at main panel for panel
and motor anti-condensation heaters.

IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE It should always be remembered that the bowl

will continue to rotate for a few minutes after stop button is pressed and that
no attempt should be made to open lid until rotation has completely ceased.

OPERATION

TORQUE CONTROL MECHANISM

This mechanism provides the reaction force to the sun gear torque arm and
automatically trips at pre-set value in event of transmission overload. In event of
overload and subsequent trip both pump and main drive motors will be automatically
shut down. Motors cannot be restarted until mechanism in reset.

To reset torque controls proceed as follows: -

a. Shut off power to the drive motor and lock starter in 'OFF' position.

b. Ensure that the bowl has stopped rotating.

c. Remove the screws securing the gearbox guard and withdraw the guards.

d. Before resetting the torque control make the following checks.

(i) Endeavour to turn the torque arm by hand in clockwise direction. If the
torque arm turns without obstruction and the gearbox remains
stationary; this indicates that the conveyor is not blocked or stalled
within the bowl; if the gearbox rotates when the arm is turned a
blockage is indicated.

(ii) If the torque arm turns and the gearbox remains stationary, endeavour
to rotate the gearbox casing by hand. If the gearbox will not rotate, a
blockage in the casing is indicated.

e. If the centrifuge has cleared itself, reset the torque control by applying
sufficient hand pressure to torque control lever in the anti-clockwise direction
to overcome the pressure of the compression link assembly and to set the
lever over-centre against the stop pin.

f. Caution: It is advisable to protect the hands with strong industrial

gloves when resetting the control, especially if a high trip setting is in
use. Alternatively a simple reset bar may be manufactured.

g. Reinstall and secure the safety guard assembly and recommence operation.

h. If the centrifuge has not cleared itself, reset the torque control mechanism as
described above, introduce a wash liquid into the centrifuge bowl and restart
the machine. Continue washing until all solids are cleared; the bowl will
usually free itself of solids during the period of acceleration when centrifugal
force is at lower value than at full speed. As soon as the bowl is clear, the
slurry feed can be restarted.

TROUBLE SHOOTING

PROCESS

Centrifuge handling capacity (throughput), dryness of solids discharge and cut point
(size of particles removed) will vary according to the viscosity of the mud, the particle
size distribution within the mud and the following variables within the centrifuge
package.

Pond depth within the centrifuge bowl (adjustable by changing ring dam plates).

(Ring dam plate numbers relate to the diameter in millimeters of the pond).

Deep pond 246

Standard pond 252
Shallow pond 285

Flowrate to the centrifuge (adjustable by variable speed drive on the pump).

Rotational speed of the centrifuge (adjustable by changing pulleys).

At a given speed, better separation (cut point) is achieved by longer retention time
within the centrifuge. Longer retention time is achieved by:-

a. Slower feed rate

b. Deeper pond

Deeper pond will, however, generally give a wetter solid product.

Insufficient Capacity: Pond depth too shallow. Torque arm incorrectly

set. (On very heavy mud dilution may assist total
volume processed by reducing viscosity).

Insufficient Separation (Cut): Pond depth too shallow. Feed rate too high.
Conveyor flights worn. Incorect bowl speed.

Solids too wet: Pond depth too high. Feed rate too high.

Solids too dry: Pond depth too shallow. Insufficient feed rate.

LUBRICATION

Important - Ensure only recommended lubricants are used.

1.0 CENTRIFUGE

1.1 Main Bearings - (grease with unit running)

- Remove both plugs from bearing housings and fit grease nipple
(supplied in tool kit) to one side.

- With machine running slowly pump grease through until clean

grease exits through open plug hole.

- Change grease nipple to other side of bearing housing and

repeat above procedure. After greasing allow machine to run for
some time before refitting plugs.

- Above procedure to be carried out every 4-6 weeks minimum.

(No problem with increased frequency, if desired e.g. - once per
week).

1.2 Conveyor Bearings - (grease with unit stopped)

When greasing these bearings, always ensure that grease escape hole is not
plugged. Grease very slowly and rotate torque arm forwards and backwards
respectively to distribute grease. Continue greasing until clean grease
emerges from escape channel.

Note: Greasing gearbox end while escape channel is plugged, or injecting

grease too fast, may result in damage to gearbox seal due to excess
pressure being applied which may be possible cause of oil loss from
gearbox.

2.0 CHARGING PUMP

Grease motor slide rails weekly.

3.0 CONTROL PANEL

Smear door threads with lubricator every occasion door is opened, or at least
once every 4 weeks.

Do not use any abrasive materials (e.g. Brasso) on door threads. To clean
use white spirit, paint brush and clean cloth.

LUBRICATION

GEARBOX

The gearbox is normally supplied ready filled with lubricant, but the oil should still be
checked before initial start up; it should subsequently be checked every two months
unless otherwise specified, and changed every twelve months. Mild EP type Mineral
oil such as Shell Macoma R220 is required which must be of a non-corrosive nature.
Any additives should be such that they will not separate out under continuous
centrifuging.

To check and fill the gearbox, proceed as follows:-

a. Shut off the power to the drive motor and lock the starter in 'OFF' position.

b. Ensure that the bowl has stopped rotating.

c. Remove the screws securing the gearbox guard and withdraw the guards.

d. Rotate the gearbox until the filler plug

in the side of the gearbox casing is in
the topmost position, this will set the
two 1/8" pipe plugs in the front face of
the gearbox in vertical alignment (see
Figure 7A).

e. Thoroughly clean the gearbox casing

in the area of the filler and level
plugs, then remove the filler plug and
the upper level plug. Check that the
oil level is slightly below the upper
level plug; if not, add oil of the
recommended grade to bring up the
level using the gearbox oil syringe.

FIGURE 7A

Caution:Exercise care to prevent dirt or chips from entering the gearbox.

f. If consistent loss of oil is evident, check the pinion shaft seal i.e., where the
torque arm is attached to the gearbox; also check the gearbox adapter area
i.e. where the gearbox is attached to the bowl hub.
If leakage occurs from the pinion shaft seal, this may be replaced as
described under 'Gearbox Assembly' (see Index). If leakage is evident around
the gearbox adapter, the complete gearbox must be returned to Drexel
Service Department for factory repair.

g. If no further lubrication is necessary, re-install and secure gearbox guard.

CONVEYOR BEARINGS

The front and rear conveyor bearings are lubricated at the factory before shipment,
and must be lubricated at least once every 4 weeks of operation.

If the centrifuge application necessitates frequent washing and/or steam cleaning,

the conveyor bearings must be lubricated on each occasion after steam cleaning and
prior to returning the machine to service.

Caution: Steam cleaning and high-pressure water cleaning should not be

applied in the immediate vicinity of the pillow blocks

If any doubts exist relative to cleaning or to frequency of lubrication, contact Brandt

service department.

Front Bearing (Gearbox End)

a. Grease introduced through the grease fitting situated in the wall of the
gearbox adapter (see Figure 7B) passes along the bore of the hub extension
to the spline bushing and into the conveyor bearings. Excess grease passes
back through an escape channel in the bowl hub extension, which terminates
in an aperture through the extension wall within the casing seal holder.

b. Inject grease of the recommended grade slowly into the grease fitting until
clean grease emerges from the escape channel.

Note:
(I) During greasing, remove the upper front parts of the gearbox guard and
rotate the torque arm forwards and backwards alternately. This will
distribute the grease and reduce the risk of possible rupture of the
grease seals. Reinstall the guard securely after greasing and before
starting the machine.

(II) If any resistance to the input of grease is experienced, this will indicate
plugged channels; in this event, greasing should be stopped
immediately to prevent possible damage to the seals. The escape
channel must then be cleared, if necessary by removing the pillow block
assembly and clearing with a suitable rod or wire.

(III) If during greasing, dirt or centrifuge product emerges from the escape
channel, this will indicate that the bearing seals are damaged and in
need of replacement as described under 'Disassemble Front Bearing'
(see Index).

7-4 034-900-M01
BRANDT HS3400 VSD HIGH SPEED CENTRIFUGE
OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL

(IV) If during greasing, metal chips emerge with the old grease, this will
indicate bearing deterioration that should be checked as described
under 'Disassemble Front Bearing' (see Index).

Rear Bearing (Pulley End)

a. Grease introduced through the grease fitting situated in the pulley hub
adjacent to the rear pillow block (see Figure 7C) passes directly along a
channel in the bowl hub extension to the conveyor bearing. Excess grease
passes back through a parallel escape channel in the bowl hub extension wall
within the casing seal holder.

b. Inject grease of the recommended grade into the grease fitting until clean
grease emerges from the escape channel.

Note: (i) During greasing, remove the gearbox guard and rotate the
torque arm forwards and backwards alternately. This will
distribute the grease and reduce the risk of possible rupture of
the grease seals. Reinstall the guard securely after greasing and
before starting the machine.

(ii) If any resistance to the input of grease is experienced, this will

indicate plugged channels; in this event, greasing should be
stopped immediately to prevent possible damage to the seals.
The escape channel must then be cleared, if necessary by
removing the pillow block assembly and clearing with a suitable
rod or wire.

(iii) If during greasing, dirt or centrifuge product emerges from the

escape channel, this will indicate that the bearing seals are
damaged and in need of replacement as described under
'Disassemble Rear Bearing' (see Index).

(iv) If during greasing, metal chips emerge with the old grease, this will indicate
bearing deterioration that should be checked as described under 'Disassemble Rear
Bearing' (see Index)

MAIN BEARINGS
7-6 034-900-M01
BRANDT HS3400 VSD HIGH SPEED CENTRIFUGE
OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL

The main bearings, situated in the front and rear pillow blocks are lubricated at the
factory before shipment. After initial filling, grease replenishment is normally
necessary every 1500 working hours (2 months continuous). If however, conditions
are such that condensation can occur inside the bearing chamber, this interval
should be reduced to 500 or 750 hours depending on the severity of the conditions.

To repack with grease, proceed as follows: -

a. Refer to Lubrication Schedule for type of lubricant.

b. Ensure that the drive belt and gearbox guards are securely in place.

c. Ensure that the upper casing is closed and secured to the lower casing.

d. Remove the grease plugs from the front and rear pillow blocks (see Figure
7D).

e. Insert grease fitting into one of the holes in each pillow block that was vacated
by the grease plugs.

f. Run the machine so that the bowl is rotating at normal speed, and inject
grease in small amounts at intervals sufficient to allow the grease temperature
to rise gradually.

g. If the grease escape hole is plugged with hardened grease, insert the grease
fitting into the plugged aperture and inject grease in the reverse direction.

h. When front and rear main bearings have been lubricated successfully remove
the grease fittings and run the machine for approximately 10 hours with all
four holes open to allow excess grease and trapped air to exhaust through the
apertures.

i. After the requisite setting period, install the grease plugs securely.

j. When the machine is running but slurry is not being fed, or if the slurry feed is
cool, the normal running temperature of the pillow blocks is less than 50oC
(120oF). When the bearings are first filled however, the temperature will rise
above this point for a short period of time but should not be in excess of 75oC
(165oF).

If excessive temperature is encountered, remove the bearing end plate, as

described under 'Repair & Overhaul' and remove sufficient grease to leave the
cavity approximately half full.

TORQUE CONTROL
(Ref Drwg 034-802-000 in Section 12).

The inside of the female spring compression link and the outside of the male spring
compression link projection are lubricated at the factory before shipment and should
normally be greased every four weeks. On certain applications however, shorter
intervals between greasing may be necessary.

To lubricate the control, proceed as follow:-

a. Refer to Lubrication Schedule for type of lubricant.

b. Shut off the power to the drive motor and lock the starter on 'OFF' position.

c. Ensure that the bowl has stopped rotating.

d. Remove the screws securing the gearbox guard and withdraw the guard.

e. Using industrial protective gloves, or suitable setting bar, manually trip the
torque control by turning torque control lever (034-065-000) in clockwise
direction until it snaps over centre and rests against the stop pin.

f. Loosen locknut (034-057-000) and turn adjusting nut out all the way.

g. Remove split pin (001-056-401) from pin (034-056-000) and remove the pin
from compression link (034-060-100). Slide the male compression link from
female compression link (034-060-101).

h. Apply the appropriate grease to the inside of the female compression link and
the outside of the projection of the male compression link and reassemble the
two parts. Reconnect the male link to the torque control lever with pin (034-
056-000) and split pin (001-056-401) ensure that the drain hole in the male
compression link is positioned at the bottom.

i. Adjust and reset the torque control as described under 'Assemble Torque
Control' (see Index).

BOWL CLEANSING
Where a specific process dictates that the centrifuge bowl must be flushed with hot
water, caustic or other dilutant, whether regularly or otherwise, this should be
undertaken before shutting down. Arrangements should be made to divert the flow
of flushing medium for the duration of the flushing operation to prevent contamination
of the effluent.

Caution: Conveyor flights etc is equipped with hard surfacing systems

which are designed to protect them from abrasive wear. These
systems are by nature not so corrosion resistant as the stainless
steels used in construction of the centrifuge. Therefore in order to
reduce the risk of chemical damage, the user should consult
Brandt Solids Control prior to using any cleansing, rinsing,
washing or bacteria killing agents in the centrifuge.

a. Shut off flow of feed slurry

b. Shut off rinsing (if in use).
c. Operate flush/feed diverter control (if fitted).
d. Introduce flushing liquor.
e. After requisite flushing period, shut off the centrifuge but continue flushing
after the bowl has stopped rotating; this flushing will deliver flushing liquid and
some solids into the liquid discharge ports.
f. Lock the starter in 'OFF' position, but continue flushing.
g. Ensure that the bowl has stopped rotating.
h. Remove the screws of the gearbox guard and withdraw the guard.
i. Rotate the bowl forwards and backwards by rotating the gearbox several turns
alternately in each direction by hand while the flushing continues. When
flushing is complete, shut off supply of flushing liquid.
Note: The action of rotating and contra-rotating the bowl will displace a
proportion of the solids into the liquid discharge. If this procedure is
unacceptable, arrangements should be made to divert this discharge to
waste during the cleaning period.
j. Remove the screws that secure the upper casing to the lower casing; ensure
that the screws in both side and ends of the casing are removed. Swing the
upper casing back on its hinge or remove as applicable.
k. Flush out the upper and lower casings with steam, hot water or solvent.

Caution: (i) Take necessary safety measures to prevent possible

injury from cleaning medium.

(ii) Steam cleaning and high pressure water cleaning should

not be applied in the immediate vicinity of the pillow
blocks (main bearings).

each part must be cleaned individually

n. After cleaning, re-assemble the bowl etc, close and secure the casing and
securely refit the gearbox guard and belt guard.

HYDRAULIC CONTROL SYSTEM

Inlet Filter (Between Fluid Reservoir and Change Pump)

The filter element must be exchanged as soon as the pressure drops below 0.75 bar
absolute (-0.25) when the transmission is at normal operating temperature. The filter
must also be exchanged each time the pressure fluid is changed.
Filtration Grade = 10 micron nominal.

Change the Oil

Under normal operating conditions, the oil should be changed at the following
intervals:

The first oil change should be carried out after maximum 80-100 hours of operation
but at the latest one year after first-time operation.

The second change should take place after maximum 500 hours of operation but at
the latest one year after first-time operation.

Thereafter, the oil should be changed at least every 1000 hours of operation or at
least once a year.

To change the oil; the used fluid must be drained off when the system is at operating
temperature! Remove any residual dirt or sludge from the reservoir.

In extremely dusty atmospheres, the intervals between oil changes must be

correspondingly shortened.

Oil samples should be taken every 500 hours of operation. To do this take
approximately 0.5 litres of oil from a point on a level with the inlet (suction)
connection. Fill the sample in a container that is free of residues.

Have the oil examined for serviceability by Oil Manufacturer or by an appropriate

institution.

Important: Use only recommended oils! It is not permissible to mix oils.

Leak Test

Carry out leak test on the transmission (inlet line, pipe and hose lines and
connections, valves, control elements, pump and motor) giving due consideration to
the service life of the transmission, environment protection and reduction of oil
consumption.

Tighten up any leaking joint and other connections while the system is not under
pressure.

7-14 034-900-M01
BRANDT HS3400 VSD HIGH SPEED CENTRIFUGE
OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL

Cleanliness

Make certain that the air filter/breather for ventilation of the oil reservoir is regularly
cleaned, since the input pressure may be affected if it is dirty. If there is an oil
cooler, the cooler surface should be kept free from contamination. On units, which
have hose couplings on the connection pipes, contamination of any sort must be
avoided. Cotton rags or lint cleaning cloths may not be used for cleaning. Use only
lint-free materials.

When changing the oil, be sure the area around the filler cap is free from foreign
objects. The oil, which can be kept clean by using a filter cloth, should be added by
means of a clean funnel.

Checking of the Oil Level

The level of the oil should be checked daily using the gauge glass. In cases of loss
of oil, the leak must be rectified.

Important: Use only recommended fluids! It is not permissible to mix.

INSTALL ROTATING ASSEMBLY

034-900-M01
8-3
BRANDT HS3400 VSD HIGH SPEED CENTRIFUGE
OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL

a. Check that the mounting faces of the pillow blocks and mating surfaces of the
frame are free of obstruction. Connect the bowl lifter and lifting straps to the
hoist and bowl as described in (n) above.

Warning: Take great care when guiding the rotating assembly into the frame
that hands, fingers or clothing etc are not vulnerable in the event
of accidental release of lifting gear.

Lift the rotating assembly and suspend it centrally over the centrifuge frame.
Carefully lower the assembly until the mounting faces of the pillow blocks are
just clear of the top face of the frame pads, then insert the dowel pin outer
sleeves through the pillow blocks and into the frame as follows:-

Warning: The importance of the pillow block dowels and sleeves should not
be underestimated. Correct and careful assembly is essential to
the safety and smooth running of the centrifuge.

Loose, cracked, distorted or missing dowels or sleeves can

cause:-

1. Serious misalignment of the pillow blocks.

2. Premature failure of main bearings.
3. Extreme vibration.
4. Friction between the rotating assembly and casing baffles
causing heat and possible fire hazard.
5. Fracture of pillow blocks and frame pads.
6. Loosening and fracture of pillow block securing screws.

(i) Align the pillow block dowel holes with those in the frame pads by
inserting a suitable length of steel rod (slightly smaller in diameter than
the holes) through one of the dowel holes in each of the pillow blocks
and into the frame.

(ii) With the pillow block and frame holes accurately aligned, lower the
rotating assembly further until the pillow blocks just touch the frame
pads, then press one dowel sleeve into the vacant hole in each pillow
block; use only hand pressure and ensure that the recessed end of the
sleeve enters the hole first. The sleeves must not be forced into place
by hammering as this will damage the sleeves and the frame; if more
than hand pressure is necessary to position the sleeve fully against the
shoulder at the bottom of the hole, carefully tap into place with a soft
faced mallet.

(iii) Remove the two locating rods and insert the remaining two sleeves.

INSTALL PINION SHAFT BEARING

(Ref Figure 8J)

a. If bearing replacement is necessary, mount the pinion shaft and bearing

assembly on an arbour press and press the bearing from the shaft. Using a
suitable length of clean steel tubing, press the new bearing by the inner race
onto the pinion shaft.

b. Insert the pinion shaft into the gearbox, taking care to mesh the gear teeth on
the first stage planet gears. The inner end of the pinion shaft is supported by
a bearing within the gearbox and must enter the bearing within the gearbox
and must enter the bearing as the shaft is inserted. If the pinion outer bearing
(pressed on the shaft) does not enter the recess in the gearbox front cover
completely, agitate the shaft slightly to enter it in the bearing. Once entered,
the pinion shaft may be pushed fully into place allowing the outer bearing to
seal fully in the recess in the front cover.

c. Press a new pinion shaft oil seal into oil seal housing. Insert screws into the
seal housing and assemble a new housing gasket to the housing by locating it
on the screws.

d. Apply an even film of mineral oil to the bore of the seal and install the
assembly to the gearbox front cover; secure in place with screws.

e. If replacement of the pinion bearing was undertaken with the gearbox out of

a. Ensure that the mating surfaces of the gearbox and the adapter are free of
obstruction. Alignment of the gearbox and smooth running of the machine
depend on true fitting of these surfaces.

b. Support the gearbox with a sling attached to a hoist. Raise the gearbox and
suspend it level with the axis of the bowl. Align the gearbox spline shaft with
the adapter and carefully enter the shaft through the adapter and front hub
into the spline bushing in the conveyor. To facilitate engagement of the shaft
and bushing, rotate the gearbox pinion shaft to align the male and female
splines, while simultaneously pushing the gearbox into engagement with the
gearbox adapter. Prior to the full entry of the gearbox spigot into the adapter,
align the clearance holes in the adapter with the tapped holes in the mating
face of the gearbox.

c. Insert and tighten the gearbox-to-adapter screws securely.

d. Rotate the gearbox pinion shaft to position the torque arm location flat at the
top (see Fig 8F).

e. Ensure that the torque arm locking screw is clear of the bore and assemble
the arm to the pinion shaft. Tighten the locking screw securely onto the
location flat and lock in place with the locknut. Reset the torque control as
described under 'Assemble Torque Control'.

f. If the machine is equipped with conveyor differential control, reconnect and

ensure alignment is correct.

g. If previously drained, refill the gearbox with the correct grade of oil to the
correct level as described under 'Lubrication' (see Index).

h. Reinstall and secure the gearbox guard.

CONVEYOR

REMOVE CONVEYOR

a. Remove rotating assembly (see Index), and remove the gearbox in the
process.

b. Remove front hub assembly (see Index).

c. Remove two diametrically opposed securing screws (111) from the front seal
holder (105) (see Figure 8L).

Warning: Take great care when removing the conveyor from the bowl that
hands, fingers and clothing etc are not vulnerable in the event of
accidental release of lifting gear. Guide only by exerting side pressure
against the hoist chain; do not grasp the conveyor flights.

Note: Conveyor should always be removed from the bowl vertically (see
figure 8K) to prevent damage to tungsten carbide tiles.

d. Attach the conveyor lifter securely to the vacant screw holes in the conveyor
front seal holder using hex head, high tensile steel M10 x 60 screws (not
supplied). Connect the lifter to a hoist using 'D' shackle and carefully withdraw
the conveyor from the bowl (see Figure 8K). Once clear of the bowl, lay the
conveyor horizontally on wood blocks to keep it from rolling or in the case of a
tiled conveyor, set it carefully on a conveyor stand; take care not to chip the
tiles. Remove the conveyor lifter.

Caution: The machine is equipped with a bowl liner, which cannot be

removed for cleaning.

Note: The conveyors have flights which are 'hard surfaced' to resist
wear from particularly abrasive process material. A
characteristic of hard surfacing is the evidence of radial cracks in
the hard surface material. The characteristic occurs during
manufacture, and is the result of the different rate of expansion
and contraction of the basic metal of the conveyor flight and hard
surfacing material when cooling.

Cracks of this nature are neither detrimental to the performance

of the centrifuge nor unsafe.

f. If the rotating assembly is mounted vertically, screw two M12 eyebolts spaced
180o apart securely into the tapped holes in the front hub flange and connect
to a hoist. Lift the assembly clear of the stand and carefully lower to horizontal
position on a firm foundation using wooden blocks to keep it from rolling.

g. With the rotating assembly laying horizontally, and if the bowl lifter was
removed, reconnect securely to the hoist and the bowl.

h. Thoroughly check and ensure that the frame pads and corresponding
mounting faces of both pillow blocks are clean and free from burrs and
damage.

Warning: Take great care when guiding the rotating assembly into the
frame that hands, fingers and clothing etc are not vulnerable in
the event of accidental release of lifting gear.

(i) Lift the rotating assembly and suspend it centrally over the
centrifuge frame. Carefully lower the assembly until the
mounting faces of the pillow blocks are just clear of the top face
of the frame pads, then insert the dowel pin outer sleeve through
the pillow blocks and into the frame as follows:-

Warning: The importance of the pillow block dowels and sleeves should
not be underestimated: correct and careful assembly is essential
to the safety and smooth running of the centrifuge.

Loose, cracked, distorted or missing dowels or sleeves can

cause:

(i) Align the pillow block dowel with those in the frame pads by inserting a
suitable length of steel rod (slightly smaller in diameter than the holes)
through one of the dowel holes in each of the pillow blocks and into the
frame.

(ii) With the pillow block and frame holes accurately aligned, lower the
rotating assembly further until the pillow blocks just touch the frame
pads, then press one dowel sleeve into the vacant hole in each
pillow block; use only hand pressure and ensure that the recessed
end of the sleeve enters the hole first. The sleeves must not be
forced into place by hammering as this will damage the sleeves and
the frame; if more than hand pressure is necessary to position the
sleeve fully against the shoulder at the bottom of the hole, carefully
tap into place with a soft faced hammer.

(iii) Remove the two locating rods and insert the remaining two sleeves.

j. Continue lowering the hoist. With the mounting faces of the blocks fully in
contact with the frame, insert the tapered portion of each dowel pin and tap it
fully home with a light soft faced hammer. Install the dowel pin protector caps.

k. Insert the pillow block attaching screws

complete with washers and tighten
securely.
Note: After removal of any part of the
main bearing assembly, it is essential
that an alignment check is made. To
perform this successfully will entail the
use of a small accurate Dial Test
Indicator and a mounting bar by which
the indicator can be held against the
outer face of the pillow block while being
rotated with the hub (see Figure 8V). FIGURE 8V

l. Check the alignment of the front main

bearing as follows:-
(i) Manufacture a suitable mounting
bar and secure this to the end of
the front hub extension by
screwing it into one of the two M8
tapped holes (see Figure 8V).

(ii) Attach the indicator to the

mounting bar and set the
indicator probe against the front
face of the pillow block. Rotate
the hub carefully and ensure that
the indicator can sweep as near
FIGURE 8W
to 360o around the face as possible without obstruction.

(iii) Set the probe at the 12 o'clock position (see Figure 8W) and adjust the
dial to register zero.

(iv) Rotate the bowl and note the dial readings as close to the 3, 6, and 9
o'clock positions as possible. The acceptable limits are as follows:-

3 o'clock to 9 o'clock ± 0.025 mm (0.001") from zero.

12 o'clock to 6 o'clock ± 0.051 mm (0.002") from zero.

If either of the readings is not within the above limits, re-check the
mounting faces of frame and pillow blocks. Check also the alignment
of the frame and its mounting bolts and possible distortion of the pillow
block.

n. When a satisfactory reading had been obtained, re-check the security of the
pillow block attaching screws and remove the dial test indicator assembly.
Remove the lifting gear.

o. Tighten screws (409) evenly.

p. Assemble end plate (304) to the outer face of the pillow block and secure in
place with screws (311).

q. Assemble flinger (306) to the gearbox adapter ensuring that the recessed side
of flinger faces the pillow block when the adapter is installed. Do not tighten
the setscrews at this stage.

r. Install the gearbox adapter on the hub extension, ensuring that the location
dowel is in place. Secure in position with the attaching screws.

s. Adjust the position flinger (306) to provide approximately 0.8 mm (1/32")

clearance between its face and the end plate. Tighten the two setscrews in
the flinger and check the clearance at several points as uniform clearance is
important.

t.. Assemble outer flinger cover (302) and secure in place with screws (312).

u. Attach the dial test indicator by its stand to the top surface of the frame and
set the indicator probe against the gearbox registering bore in the gearbox
adapter. Rotate the bowl carefully by hand and note the indicator reading.
Set the indicator probe against the front face of the gearbox adapter and
repeat the abovecheck. If the respective readings are greater than 0.025 mm
(0.001") Total Indicator Reading, the gearbox adapter may be distorted or not
seating fully against the bearing. Check for burrs or foreign matter trapped
between the adapter and the bearing inner race and correct the condition.

(vi) Assemble the heated bearing to the hub extension and guide it along
until it seats fully against the location shoulder. Allow to cool at room
temperature.

(v) Continue assembly as described in (b) (i) thru (v) above.

d. Assemble outer flinger (306) to the pulley extension ensuring that the
recessed side of the flinger faces the pillow block when the pulley is installed.
Do not tighten the two set screws at this stage.

e. Heat Pulley (7), by induction heating method to 130oC-140o. Install the pulley
on the hub extension and secure in place with attaching screws.

f. If the bowl lifter was removed, re-connect securely to the rotating assembly
and to the hoist.

g. Thoroughly check and ensure that the frame pads and corresponding
mounting faces of both pillow blocks are clean and free from burrs and
damage.

h. Warning: Take great care when guiding the rotating assembly into the
frame that hands, fingers and clothing etc are not vulnerable in the event of
accidental release of lifting gear.

Warning: The importance of the pillow block dowels and sleeves should
not be underestimated: correct and careful assembly is essential to the safety
and smooth running of the centrifuge.

Loose, cracked, distorted or missing dowels or sleeves can cause:-

1. Serious misalignment of pillow blocks.

2. Premature failure of main bearings.
3. Extreme vibration.
4. Friction between the rotating assembly and casing baffles
causing heat and possible fire hazard.
5. Fracture of pillow blocks and frame pads.
6. Loosening and fracture of pillow block securing screws.

(i) Align the pillow block dowel holes with those in the frame pads by
inserting a suitable length of steel rod slightly smaller in diameter than
the holes through one of the dowel holes in each of the pillow blocks
and into the frame.

The sleeves must not be forced into place
by hammering as this will damage the sleeves and the frame; if more
than hand pressure is necessary to position the sleeve fully against the
shoulder at the bottom of the hole, carefully tap into place with a soft
faced hammer.

(iii) Remove the two locating rods and insert the remaining two sleeves.

j. Insert the pillow block attaching screws complete with washers and tighten
securely.
Note: After renewal of any part of the main bearing assembly, it is essential
that an alignment check is made. To perform this successfully will entail the
use of a small accurate Dial Test Indicator and mounting clamp, by which the
indicator can be held against the outer face of the end plate while being
rotated with the hub (see Figure 8Z).

k. Check the alignment of the rear main bearing as follows:-

(i) Manufacture a suitable mounting

clamp/bar and secure this around
the pulley (See Fig. 8Z).

(ii) Attach the indicator to the mounting

bar and set the indicator probe
against the face of end plate (303).
Rotate the hub carefully and ensure
that the indicator can sweep as near
to 360o around the face as possible
without obstruction.

(iv) Rotate the bowl and note the dial readings as close to the 3, 6, and 9
o'clock positions as possible. The acceptable limits are as follows: -

3 o'clock to 9 o'clock 0.025 mm (0.001") from zero.

12 o'clock to 6 o'clock 0.051 mm (0.002") from zero.

If either of the readings is not within the above limits, re-check the
mounting faces of the frame and pillow blocks. Check also the
alignment of the frame and it’s mounting bolts and possible distortion of
the pillow block.

l. When a satisfactory reading has been obtained, re-check the security of the
pillow block attaching screws and remove the dial test indicator assembly.
Remove the lifting gear.

m. Adjust the position of flinger (306) to provide approximately 0.8 mm (1/32")

clearance between its face and the end plate. Tighten the two set screws
(313) in the flinger and check the clearance at several points as uniform
clearance is important.

n. Assemble outer flinger cover (302) and secure in place with screws (312).

o. Tighten screws (409) evenly.

p. Install gearbox (see Index).

q. Install the drive belts and adjust the tension as described in the 'Installation'
section under 'Install Drive Belts' (see Index).

r. Install the feed tube as described in the 'Installation' section under 'Install
Feed Tube' (see Index).
s. Check that both sections of the casing gasket are in place, then close and
secure the upper casing to the lower casing and check for freedom of rotation.

t) Lubricate the assembly as described under 'Lubrication' (see Index).

REMOVE FRONT HUB ASSEMBLY

a. Remove rotating assembly (see Index) and remove the gearbox in the
process.

b. Attach the conveyor lifter (490-3) securely to the tapped holes in the flange of
the gearbox adapter using two M8 x 35 high tensile steel hex head screws
(not supplied) and connect to a hoist with 'D' shackle (490-4). Restrain the
rear (pulley) end of the assembly to prevent sliding and carefully raise the
bowl assembly into vertical position.

c. Secure the bowl assembly, pulley end downwards, either in the bowl cradle or
set it vertically in the bowl stand. Alternatively stand it on wooden blocks with
the pulley clear of the floor and lash it securely to a stanchion.

Caution: (i) Do not rest the pulley on the floor or on the blocks.
(ii) Do not under normal circumstances, attempt to
remove the conveyor from the bowl in horizontal
position.

d. Remove screws (17) securing the front hub to the bowl; also remove socketed
grub screws (21) from the jacking screw holes.

e. Jack the hub assembly away from the bowl shell with the aid of the special
jackscrews supplied with the machine. Ensure that the screws are not
damaged with notches or sharp edges that may burr the surface of the bowl
rim (See Fig. 8AA)

f. With the aid of the hoist, carefully lift the front hub complete with the front
bearing assembly and gearbox adapter not more than 25 mm (1") from the
face of the bowl; lift as near to vertical as possible.
CAUTION
At this stage make certain that the conveyor is not lifting with the
hub assembly; the conveyor can be seen through the gap between
the bowl rim and the hub. If the conveyor has lifted and is still
suspended on the hub, proceed as described under step (g)
onwards. If the conveyor has not moved however, proceed as
described under step (I).
WARNING
Under no circumstances must hands or fingers be inserted
between the hub and bowl rim to release the conveyor, or for any
other purpose, in case accidental release of lifting gear.

g. Re-check the security of the bowl in its support

h. Perform the following conveyor release methods in sequence, as applicable:-

1. The bowl hub has through holes for the plate dam securing screws, if
these are in line with the face of the conveyor, remove two plate dam
securing screws at 180o spacing. Hoist the hub assembly
approximately 12 mm (½") clear of the bowl face and insert 100 mm
(4") long jacking screws to release the conveyor.

2. If method (1) above is not practicable or is not successful, hoist the hub
assembly just far enough to make the gap between the conveyor top
and the hub assembly accessible, and pry the conveyor away from the
hub using wedges if necessary.

3. If methods (1) or (2) are not successful, lower the hub assembly back
onto the bowl and attach with the securing screws. With the conveyor
lifter still attached securely to the gearbox adapter, just support the
weight of the rotating assembly with the hoist, remove the bowl from the
cradle or stand or from its safety lashings and lay the assembly
horizontally on blocks to keep it from rolling.

Remove the bowl hub securing screws and jack the hub assembly clear of the
bowl together with the conveyor. Lay the hub assembly/conveyor on blocks
and pry free with wedges.

i. Set the front hub assembly down on a clean working surface taking care not to
damage the mating face.

REPAIR & OVERHAUL

TO REMOVE DRIVE PULLEY

a. Slacken all screws by several turns, remove one or two according to number
of jacking off holes shown thus ● in diagram. Insert screws in jacking off
holes after oiling thread and point of grub screws or thread and under head of
cap screws.

a. Tighten screws alternately until bush is

loosened in hub and assembly is free on the
shaft.

b. Remove assembly from shaft.

TO INSTALL DRIVE PULLEY

a. Remove the protective coating from the bore and outside of bush, and bore of
hub. After ensuring that the mating tapered surfaces are completely cleaned
and free from oil or dirt, insert bush in hub so that holes line up.

b. Sparingly oil thread and point of grub screws, or thread and under head of cap
screws. Place screws loosely in holes threaded in hub, shown thus ! in
diagram.

c. Clean shaft and fit hub to shaft as one unit and locate in position desired,
remembering that bush will nip the shaft first and then hub will be slightly
drawn on to the bush

d. Using a hexagon wrench tighten screws gradually and alternately to torque 50

Nm.

e. Hammer against large-end of bush, using a block or sleeve to prevent

damage. (This will ensure that the bush is seated squarely in the bore).
Screws will now turn a little more. Repeat this alternate hammering and screw
tightening once or twice to achieve maximum grip on the shaft.

f. If a key is to be fitted place it in the shaft keyway before fitting the bush. It is
essential that it is a parallel key and side fitting only and has TOP
CLEARANCE.

g. After drive has been running under load for a short time stop and check
tightness of screws.

a) Fill empty holes with grease to exclude dirt.

INSTALL DRIVE BELTS

After installing and/or re-securing the rotating assembly into the frame and prior to
fitting the feed tube, install the drive belts.

a. Ensure the motor pulley and centrifuge pulley have not sustained nicks or
burrs during handling. Also check that the pulleys have not been
contaminated with dirt, oil or rust etc, all of which can damage drive belts;
check the alignment of the pulley by holding a straight edge against the pulley
outer faces (see Figure 8EE); any evidence of pulley wobble will make pulley
alignment impossible.

b. Ensure that the drive belts are clean, dry and in good condition. If belts have
been contaminated by grease or oil, clean thoroughly with a suitable non
flammable cleaning agent.

c. Each belt has a 'code' allocated by the manufacturer. It is inadvisable to mix

belts of different codes, or to mix new belts with old belts.

d. Install belts on the motor and centrifuge pulleys and turn the belt adjusting
screw(s) in the appropriate direction (see Figure 8EE).

To achieve correct belt adjustment:-

i. Ensure that both pulleys are in alignment.

ii. Measure the span in metres or inches.

iii. Adjust the tension in the belts to permit 16mm deflection per metre
(1/64" deflection per inch) of span, measured at the centre of the span
of each belt, when a force of 1.5 to 2.0kg (3.3 to 4.4 Ibf) is applied at
90o to each belt by a hand held scale (see Figure 8FF).

e. Install Feed Tube (see index)

Note: There will normally be a drop in belt tension during the first 10 to 12
hours of operation. During this run-in period, the belts tend to seat fully
into the grooves of the pulley and the initial stretch takes place. After
the first 10 to 12 hours of running, the drive should be stopped and
another check made for correct tension.
