Workshop Week 6: Hypothesis testing on one sample

1. A grocery shop has packed oranges in special bags and ensures that one bag yields 2.5 litres
of juice. After randomly selecting 42 bags, the packer found that the average juice production
per bag was 2.2 litres. Historical data states that the population standard deviation is 0.2
litres. Using this sample, can it be concluded that the shop’s claim is correct? Report the
p-value used.
Answer: H0 : µ = 2.5; Ha : µ 6= 2.5; Zcal = −9.721; p − value = 0; Reject H0

2. Before the 1973 oil embargo and subsequent increases in the price of crude oil, gasoline
consumption in the United States had increased at an average seasonal adjustment rate
of 0.57 % per month. In 15 randomly selected months between 1975 and 1985, gasoline
consumption had an average rate of increase of only 0.33 % per month, with a standard
deviation of 0.10 % per month. For a significance level of 0.01, can you conclude that the
increase in gasoline use was reduced as a result of the embargo and its consequences?
Answer: H0 : µ = 0.57; Ha : µ < 0.57; Tcal = −9.295; p − value = 0; tα = −2.624; Reject
H0

3. Camilo Dı́az, the new manager of a grocery chain in Bogotá, is interested in the percentage
of customers who are totally satisfied with the shop. The previous manager had 80 % of
totally satisfied customers and Camilo assures that the same is true today. Camilo obtained
a sample of 300 customers and found that 207 were completely satisfied. With a significance
level of 5 %, is there evidence that Camilo’s statement is valid?
Answer: H0 : π = 0.8; Ha : π 6= 0.8; Zcal = 1.06; p − value = 0.28929; zα/2 = 2.576; don’t
reject H0

4. In 2001, it was estimated that about 62 % of Colombian households are cable TV

subscribers. The editors of a certain magazine, were sure that their readers had cable
subscriptions on a higher average than the general population and wanted to use this fact
to help sell advertising space for the cable premiere channels. To verify this, they sampled
280 of the magazine’s subscribers and found that 134 of them had cable TV subscriptions.
With a significance level of 2 %, does the survey data support the publishers’ view?
Answer: H0 : π = 0.62; Ha : π > 0.62; Zcal = −4.737; p − value = 1; zα/2 = 2.054; don’t
reject H0
