Forexample: fromthe verb run -a running brook; from the verb meditate - a man meditating, from the verb sing - a girl singing. present participles one which descibes action occuring simultaneous tothe action ofthe action of the primary verb, It could be used with a present, past or future verb. For example: ‘The man és content studying Sanskrit. ‘The man was content studying Sanskrit. ‘The man will be content, siudying Sanskrit. ‘The participle studying, in all 3 cases is present in relation tothe time ofthe action is, was or will be. The participle also modifies, in each case, the subject of the sentence. It becomes simple (0 understand how ‘a participle is used in Sanskrit if we rephrase the sentence: ‘The man, studying Sanskrit, is content. Here, studying is clearly ysed as an adjective modifying man, Therefore, like man, it must be putin the Ist Case singular. To ritake this even clearer, we could use a participle in the following way: A singing man is a happy man. Here the participle singing is used directly as an adjective. But the advantage of a participle over other adjectives such as good, strong etc. is that, like the verb itis derived from, it can take an object, ¢-g. ‘Aman, singing Sanskrit, is a happy man. A participle must agree with the noun it modifies! 2nd Case - direct abject) I heard the man singing Sanskrit, Here, singing modifies man, which is the direct object. It must also appear in the 2nd case singular. The formation of present participles is determined by the two classifications of verbs: 1) Parasmaipadt and 2) Atmanepadi. 1) This lesson will cover only the Parasmaipadt. Present participles for Parasmaipadi verbs of the Ist, 4th, 6th and 10th houses (pg.2 Les. 3). They are formed by adding Pl to the verbal base. Root Base Participle Ist House oe ary ‘TIAL (knowing) 4th House A ce RFA (dancing) 6th House fae fz FAA (Finding) 10th House Ks ary ATTA (stealing) Present participles, ending in 37¢ are declined like nouns and adjectives ending in and FA with the one exception of the Ist case sing., where the vowel does not lengthen with participles. Example.
