Reference textbook:

Although the 2nd edition of the reference textbook dates from 1996, it is still a very good reference for this
mathematical course (better than many more recent textbooks). This classic textbook does not include additional
material like Matlab laboratories or online illustrations, but such additional material will be provided to you
separately. Since this is a classic textbook it is also easier to buy a used copy (see the section on the VirtualCampus
course page).

H0104 and STE G0103. A seating plan will be published.
Why this course?

This course introduces some fundamental notions of signals and systems analysis. These notions are
required in several fields related to electrical engineering: telecommunications, control and automation,
multimedia processing (speech, audio, video, image), electromagnetics (wireless comm., antennas), optics,
power transmission systems, biomedical engineering, etc. In addition, hardware and software systems
developed in computer engineering are often for applications related to the above fields. In several
subsequent courses, students will have the opportunity to use and learn further about the concepts
introduced in this course.

Calendar description:

"Continuous-time and discrete-time signals. Mathematical description of systems. Properties of systems.

Convolution and impulse response of continuous and discrete time LTI systems. Fourier series of periodic
continuous and discrete time signals. Decomposition and approximation of signals by orthogonal functions.
The Fourier transform of continuous and discrete time signals. Frequency response of systems. Frequency
selective filtering. First and second order systems. Sampling and interpolation of continuous-time signals.
LTI system analysis with Laplace transforms."

Virtual Campus:

The Virtual Campus environment (https://tlss.uottawa.ca/site/connection-to-the-lms) will be used to post

a lot of information about the course (material to study, some problem solutions, information on labs and
quizzes, illustrations and examples, results, etc.).
