A 2-year-old girl is diagnosed with cystic fibrosis.

How do the alterations in her exocrine glands

influence her breathing?
Well first off cystic fibrosis is an autosomal recessive inherited disease and it affects the lungs,
digestive tract, reproductive organs. So exocrine glands do secrete abnormally produce thick
mucus because of the epithelial ion transport. In your lungs, there are thick secretions that
obstruct the bronchioles and predispose your lungs of any infections.
The thick mucous also causes mucous plugging, and atelectasis. Her airway walls are destroyed
by air trapping. She is predisposed to frequent infections and develops chronic inflammation.
This leads to increased dyspnea, frequent chronic cough, and sputum production.
