Quickly get up the mountain and out of the hot lava’s way by counting by 10s all the
way to 100. In this lesson, you will explore counting by 10s by using your body and
playing online games!

Can you count to 100? Do you know a quicker way to count to 100? We can skip some
numbers that we know are there, and count more quickly. Let's do it!

Do you know a quicker way to count to 100? 

We can skip some numbers that we know are there, and count more quickly. One of


the quickest ways is by counting by 10s.

1. Print out the 1 - 100 Number Chart found under Downloadable Resources in
the right-hand sidebar.

2. I want you to start right before the 1 and count 10 spaces. What number did you
land on? Yes, the 10. Color that space in.

3. Now count another 10 spaces from the number 10. What number did you land
on? 20? Good! Now color in that space.

4. Again, count 10 spaces and color in that space. Are you starting to see a
pattern? What space do you think you will color in next?
5. Count another 10 spaces and color in that space. Were you correct with your
guess?

6. Continue coloring in every 10 spaces until you get to 100. Great, now you have all
of the 10s colored in (10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100).

Say each 10 aloud and count by 10s to 100. Excellent!

Counting by 10s is one way we can skip-count.

We are going to continue practicing our 10s-skip-counting climbing up a mountain and


out of the way of hot lava!

Can you get to safety at the top of the mountain by counting by 10s all the way
up to 100?

Give it a try!

Get out 11 paper plates or pieces of paper and write 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80,
90, 100 (one number on each plate) on them.

Lay them out, in order from biggest (100) to smallest (0), on the ground far enough
apart that you could jump to each one. Each plate is a rock you can rest on, because
in between them is hot lava!

Start at the 0 rock and quickly tiptoe to the 10, so as to not get burned by the hot
lava! With each step, count from 1-10.

Rest on the 10 rock and, when you are ready, tiptoe quickly to the 20"rock, counting
from 11-20. You made it safely!
Now tiptoe to the 30 rock, counting from 21-30. Keep counting each step until you
reach the top of the mountain at 100!

Did it take you a long time to make it across?


Did you get burned by the hot lava?

Let's try to get to safety more quickly!

Start again on the 0 rock. This time, jump to each rock, counting by 10s.

Next time, try to take large steps across counting by 10s.

Can you jump sideways to each rock?


How about using your arms to pretend to fly to each rock?

Yes, 10 cents, or 10 pennies. Using your 100 chart, let's see how many dimes it takes
to make $1.00, or 100 pennies.

Place a dime on each 10 until you get to the 100. How many dimes are in $1.00?

Let's take the dimes off the chart and skip-count 10s all the way to $1.00.

Can you guess how many dimes there are in $2.00?

Would it be easier to count by using dimes (10s) or pennies (1s)?
