HOW TO USE THIS SUPPLEMENTARY LEARNING MATERIAL (SLeM) S
Before you start answering the module, I want you to set aside other tasks
that will disturb you while enjoying the lessons. Read the simple instructions below to
successfully enjoy the objectives of this kit. Have fun!
1. Follow carefully all the contents and instructions indicated in every page of
this module.
2. Write on your notebook or any writing pad the concepts about the lessons.
Writing enhances learning, that is important to develop and keep in mind.
3. Perform all the provided activities in the module.
4. Let your facilitator/guardian assess your answers.

BRIEF INTRODUCTION
Many scientists are given credit in the development of the theories in
4
electromagnetic waves. Electromagnetic waves are waves that are created as a
result of oscillations of electric and magnetic fields, they propagate through
space, carry energy and move at a speed of 3x10 8 m/s. Electromagnetic theory
proposed by James Clerk Maxwell.
Scientists involved in the development of the Electromagnetic Theory
are James Clerk, Maxwell, Andre Ampere, Michael Faraday, Hans Christian
Oersted and Heinrich Hertz.
ACTIVITIES
Complete the concept map about electromagnetic waves.

REMEMBER
The electromagnetic theory proposed by James Clerk Maxwell proposed the
Electromagnetic theory stating that electromagnetic waves are oscillations of electric
and magnetic fields that travel through space as waves moving at the speed of light.
POST TEST
Modified True or False. Write True if the statement is True but if not change the
underlined word to make it correct.
1. Electromagnetic Waves are produced by vibrating charges and propagate
themselves through space by the mutual generation of changing electric and
magnetic fields.
2. Electric and magnetic fields vibrate parallel to one another.
6
3. Oersted discovered that a magnetic needle is deflected by an
adjacent electric current while Ampere began developing a mathematical and
physical theory to understand the relationship
between electricity and magnetism.
4. Electromagnetic Induction introduced by Maxwell states that light waves are
of the same character as the electromagnetic waves that are caused by a
rapidly vibrating electric current.
5. Faraday discovered Electromagnetic wave theory.
PRETEST
Choose the letter of the BEST answer.
1. Traveling disturbances that carry energy and do not require a transmitting
medium to travel are called ________________.
A. Electric Waves C. Magnetic Waves
B. Electromagnetic Waves D. Radio Waves
ANSWER: A
2. Electromagnetic waves are produced by __________________________.
A. accelerating protons C. accelerating waves
B. accelerating charges D. changing electrons
ANSWER:C
3. The speed of electromagnetic waves is
A. 3 x 10 10 m/s C. 3x 10 8 m/s
B. 3 x 10 8 km/h D. 3 x 10 -8 m/s
ANSWER:D
4. Unlike mechanical waves, EM waves
A. have higher amplitudes C. can propagate in air
B. have longer wavelengths D. can travel in empty space D.

3. can travel through a vacuum.
4. travel at the speed of light in vacuum, c=3×108 m/s
5. may be produced by oscillating electric charges or from the transition of
electrons between different energy levels in an atom.
6. obey the wave equation c=fλ
ACTIVITY
Make a graphic organizer to summarize the topic on Electromagnetic Spectrum. Use
a separate sheet of paper.
REMEMBER
Electromagnetic Waves are disturbances that carry energy that does not require a
medium to travel. They vary with different wavelengths, frequency and energy. The
longer the wavelength, the lesser the frequency and energy. The shorter the
wavelength the greater the frequency and energy.
POST TEST

A. directly proportional C. directly square proportional
B. inversely proportional D. inversely square proportional
ANSWER:A
2. What will happen to the frequency of an EM wave if its wavelength is
increased?
A. Also increase C. Decreases
B. Increases 2x D. Decreases 2x
ANSWER:C

3. Electromagnetic waves are produced by vibrating
A. Electrical charges C. Protons
B. Water waves D. Neutrons
ANSWER:B
4. Which of the following is FALSE about Electromagnetic Waves?
A. Transverse in nature.
B. Needs a medium to travel
C. Travel as fast as the speed of light in a vacuum
D. Arranged in an electromagnetic spectrum in terms of increasing
frequency from radio waves to gamma rays.
ANSWER:A
5. What will happen to the energy possessed by an electromagnetic wave if the
wavelength increases?
