WOOL FELT
Wool felt is made of sheep's
wool fibres. The fibres consist of
a core surrounded by a shell of
microscopic scales/barbs.
The various properties of wool
felt depend on the structure of
the fibres and their ability to mat
together.
When subjected to pressure,
moisture and heat, the fibres
mesh together, making the
material hard and abrasion
resistant.
Wool felt is particularly suitable
for processing and is available
in a variety of different types
and grades. Carbonised felt,
for example, in which a stiffener
has been added to provide a
hard smooth surface which will
not fray. Wool felt can also be
impregnated with flame retardant
compounds.
Thanks to the absorbing
properties of felt, the material is
particularly suitable for lubricating
seals.
