Chemical changes

 Study the nature of chemical changes further.

Activity 8.4
Activity 8.5
Activity 8.6
Activity 8.7
Features of a chemical change-
1. Evolution of gases
2. Change in colour
3. Change in temperature (exchange of heat)
4. Formation of precipitates
5. Production of sound/light
6. Production of an odour

The formation of a new substance having a different composition or

several new substances by one or more substances undergoing change
is known as a chemical change or a chemical reaction.
The substances that get subjected to change during a chemical reaction
are called reactants.
1. What are the reactants of burning of magnesium?

The new substances formed by a chemical reactions are referred to as

products.
2. What is the product of burning of magnesium?
3. Write the reaction of burning of magnesium.
4. Write examples for chemical reactions.

Law of conservation of mass

 Do total mass of the substances that are subjected to the
chemical changes?
Activity 8.8 –draw the figure
Activity 8.9
Open systems - The systems in which the substances can exchange
between the system and the surroundings are referred to as open
systems.
Closed systems-The systems in which the substances cannot exchange
between the system and the environment are called closed systems.

 Find out whether a change occurs in the total mass of substances

taking part in a chemical reaction

Activity 8.10 -draw figure 8.6

Activity 8.11 –draw figure 8.7
The French scientist Antoine Lavoisier (1743 - 1794) - Law of
conservation of mass.
Law of conservation of mass -
During chemical reactions the total mass does not change. That means
the mass is conserved.
