3.4 Mount flexx to the wall

The following steps will help you to prepare the wall mounting. Be sure that:

● the terminal has been mounted to the flexx housing

● the two terminal cables have been guided into the inside
● the cable from the external wall power supply has been guided into the inside
● a possible network cable has been guided into the inside

Now you can start mounting the flexx to the wall by using the provided wall mounting rail
(see drawing below) and a spirit level. There are nine (9) holes of 8 mm diameter for fixing
the mounting rail to the wall. After mounting just hook in the flexx. For the final wall
assembly we further recommend to use the four prefabricated boreholes (8 mm diameter)
in each corner of the backplate (see arrows in the pictures).

Take care, that the backplate is not being bent while fixing the additional screws.
If there is any tension on the backplate and/or other parts of the housing, this may
result in problems when closing the service door or the front door.

3.5 Connect external wall power supply

Attention:
At this point of installation there is a non-connected high voltage cable leading into
the inside of your flexx housing. For safety reasons we recommend to connect the
external power supply cable to the internal power supply unit of your flexx, before
taking any further steps in installation!

1.

Connect the external power supply cable as

3.9 Operating the flexx without Ethernet Network

If you choose to operate your flexx system directly controlled by a (local) PC without using
a network connection, your delivery will include a USB adapter, e.g. SNG 3.
Now you have several possibilities to connect your (local) PC, also depending on if you
want to operate your flexx system with or without a proxSafe terminal. The individual
connections/settings of the SNG 3 will be given below for each option.
SNG 3 adapters with one yellow and one green LED are being powered by the USB cable
from the PC.

Note:

1. If you want to connect an earlier version of SNG3 adapter with two green LEDs
and have problems with powering, use an additional power supply for the
SNG3 itself. For further information ask your local sales and service partner.
2. All following options given in this chapter require jumper settings as shown in
picture 3.8.2.1 (jumpers not set!)!

3.9.1 Connect PC with proxSafe terminal via USB adapter

For operating the flexx system without network connection using the proxSafe terminal, you
have two possibilities: For direct connection of the PC with the terminal not using the
backplane connect the SNG 3 as follows:

1. 2.

b)

a)

Set both dip switches on the adapter to Connect to SNG 3 as follows:

position “ON”. a) cable “Slave” from the proxSafe terminal
to connector “proxSafe” on SNG3
b) USB connector to PC

3.9.2 Connect PC with proxSafe terminal via backplane PCB

The second option for operating the flexx system using the proxSafe terminal without
network connection is to directly connect the PC to the backplane PCB. For this connect
the SNG 3 as follows:

1. 2.

Set both dip switches on the adapter to Connect to SNG 3 as follows:

position “ON”. b) USB connector to PC
d) “To PC” on backplane (green 4 pin)

3.9.3 Connect PC with backplane PCB not using a proxSafe terminal

If you choose to operate your flexx system without network connection and without using
the proxSafe terminal, you can connect the PC directly to the backplane PCB. The setting
of the dip switches on the SNG 3 depends on one hand on how many flexx systems (i.e.
flexx backplane PCBs) are connected (also refer to 3.16 „Install further flexx housings“)
and where the SNG 3 is located within the bus line. The connections and settings for the
SNG 3 are as follows:

1. 2.

e)

Set both dip switches on the adapter as follows: Connect to SNG 3 as follows:
a) 1 flexx backplane --> both “On” b) USB connector to PC
b) 2 or more flexx backplane PCBs with e) “Local MUX” --> “Terminal MUX” on
SNG 3 at end of bus line --> both “On” flexx backplane PCB
c) 2 or more flexx backplane PCBs with SNG
3 in the middle of bus line --> both “Off”

3.10 Connect keyPanels to backplane PCB

1. 2.

Plug the first cable from the topmost flexx If your flexx system includes more than 4
keyPanel into the most right connector in the keyPanels (“24U”), continue with the next
behind row (as shown above). Then stay in keyPanel cables starting in the front row and
the same row and move with the next cables moving again from right to left.
to the left.

3.11 Connect terminal to backplane PCB

In order to establish a connection between the terminal and the backplane proceed as
shown in the picture below:

Plug the two supplied cables coming from

the terminal into the backplane PCB:
Cable “Master” -> Plug “Terminal MUX”
Cable “Slave” -> Plug “Terminal PC”

3.12 Connect LEDs

In order to connect the LEDs on top of the flexx housing, proceed as shown in the picture
below:

Plug the LED cable (coming down within the

housing) from the LEDs on top of the flexx
into the connector “LEDs” on the flexx
backplane PCB.

After the LED cable has been connected to

the backplane PCB and the power has been
turned on, the three LEDs should look as
shown in the picture:

yellow: standard operating mode;

always active, as long as power on
green: after door has been released
for taking or returning keys
red: alarm case

28 ps_flexx_wi_en V08/09/09
proxSafe flexx

Important:
The functions of the red and green LEDs described above refer to operation of the
flexx system with the proxSafe terminal!

Only the yellow status LED indicating the standard operating mode will be active
as long as the power is turned on, even if the system is being operated without the
proxSafe terminal!

3.13 Connect Door Contact

In order to allow the flexx system to control the front door, the door contact has to be
connected to the flexx backplane PCB.

Therefore two different jacks on the flexx backplane need to be connected to the (4-core) cable
coming from the door lock of the front door. The input „Door contact“ is used for the feedback
about the opening status of the front door (i.e. to report within the system, if the door is open or
closed) and the output „Door strike“ is responsible for unlocking the front door.

Connect as shown in the picture below:

Connect two cables (brown and white) to the

output “Door Strike” and two cables (green
and yellow) to the input “Door Contact”.

V08/09/09 ps_flexx_wi_en 29

3.14 Install/Activate tamper switches

The proxSafe flexx is equipped with two different tamper switches.

The right internal tamper switch (a) in picture 1 below) is connected to the input „Tamper
Wall“ on the flexx backplane PCB. It has a small metal strap used as a wall contact (see
picture below). This wall contact will initiate an internal alarm in case of a forced removal
from the wall. This alarm case consists of a message within the connected software system
(terminal/network PC), the red LED on top of the flexx will be turned on (only if operated
with proxSafe terminal; see also bottom note in 3.12 „Connect LEDs“) and another red
LED on the flexx backplane PCB itself will be turned on as well.

Note:
Due to connection to the internal power supply of the backplane PCB this tamper
alert will naturally fail to report any sabotage actions in case of a (forced)
disconnection from the power supply.

The left external tamper switch (b) in picture 1 below) is independent (potential-free) from
the flexx software and the flexx power supply. It is connected to a second small metal strap
also used as a wall contact (see same picture below). This external tamper switch can be
connected using the provided three pole connector (with 6.3 mm flat blade connectors). In
case of any removal from the wall this contact will release a signal, which can be used to
initiate an alarm in an external monitoring system (i.e. alarm system).

There is another input on the backplane PCB called „Tamper Service“. This contact is
normally bridged. If connected to an magnetic switch (optional) at the service door, this
tamper alert can also be used to report any (unauthorized) access to the flexx service door
within a software system (terminal/network PC).

3.15 Connect power supply and back-up battery

Your proxSafe flexx system needs a supply voltage of 13.8 V in order to charge the back-
up battery during operation. If you prefer operating without back-up battery, it is sufficient
to supply the system with 12 V/DC.
First the power supply unit inside the flexx has to be connected to the external wall power
supply (see 3.5 „Connect external wall power supply“).

For connection of the internal power supply unit and the back-up battery use the cables,
which have been supplied with your flexx system.
1. 2.

two isolated backplanes in picture 2. (b))

2. (b)

Important:
If you plan to connect more than two flexx housings (i.e. more than two flexx
backplanes), you will need additional power supply units. For sufficient power supply
in this case contact your local sales and service partner.

3.17 Close flexx doors

After closing the service door with one of the service keys and pushing the front door back
into place until clicking you can operate your new flexx.

5. Commissioning of the proxSafe system

The following commissioning procedure is operated automatically by the terminal. Note,
that this procedure works only once, when the system is in its initial state (factory delivery).
If you should need to repeat this procedure, please contact your local service partner for
further instructions.

5.1 Selftest
After turning the power on the terminal will show the following screen:
The device carries out a selftest. The screen
may look as follows. Carefully watch the
Welcome following messages:
to proxSafe V.1.xx

• All messages should end with an “OK”-

symbol “√”
Device Check ...
02.flexx16 8 8 0 0 √
• With each flexx keyPanel you see the
Card Reader xx.xx √ number of connected proxCylinders per
Key Reader √ row. For example for the proxSafe flexx
keyPanel 3U (with 16 slots) this should
always be “8 8 0 0”.
The commissioning procedure will then
run through every connected flexx
keyPanel counting upwards.

Note:
This message will only be correct
after full commissioning of your
proxSafe flexx!

If more than one flexx housing is
connected to the terminal, you should
receive one message for each flexx in
the 2nd line.
• If you chose to install a deister card
reader into the terminal, you should
receive the version number of the card
reader in the 3rd line.
• If no card reader or a Wiegand reader
is installed, the 3rd line will display
“Wiegand interface √”.
You may repeat the device check several times before continuing. Just disconnect and re-
connect the system power.

Present Card of the keyTag reader (integrated into the
Mo 01.01.01 12:12:12 keypad).
:History 0-9:PIN

Important:
The first card presented to the
terminal will be registered by the
terminal as Administrator card.

The administrator status can be changed

later on within the according PC Software.
We strictly recommend to store the
administrator card in a safe place after
the commissioning procedure!

The administrator card authorizes to directly change the system settings, the keyTag
settings, the date and time at the Terminal.

5.3 Addressing of flexx housings

After having created the administrator card, the terminal will start the addressing
procedure for the flexx housings. If you operate only one flexx with your terminal, you can
skip this procedure by pressing the red key <C>. The terminal will then continue with
teaching-in the keyTags (see 5.4 „Teach-in of keyTags).
Present one of your keyTags to the built-in
keyTag reader. The doors of all flexx
Please present housings will simultaneously be unlocked

proxCylinder of the first flexx housing.

You will hear a beep and the display shows

the following screen:
Please remove keyTag Now you can remove the keyTag from the
first flexx.
C:Cancel

Important:
In most cases there is more than one keyPanel (up to 8) located within one flexx
housing. Make sure, that you do not insert a further keyTag into any proxCylinder of
the same flexx housing! (This will result in address confusion!)

Repeat this procedure for the following flexx housings No. 2, 3, etc. After you have
removed the keyTag from the last flexx, press <C> in order to terminate the flexx
addressing procedure. After the flexx addressing procedure the system may perform
another self-test.

pressing the red key <C>.
C:Cancel Proceed as well with the other keyPanels,
until all panels are filled.

Repeat this procedure with all flexx housings. If all keys have been inserted into the flexx
housings, your proxSafe flexx system is ready for test operation.

5.5 Test Operation

With the above procedure you have created a minimum key management system with the
following specifications:

• one user named “administrator”

• all keyTags named “keyTag Cxxyy”, where xx is the number of the flexx housing and yy
is the number of the slot, where this keyTag is located

• an administrator, who has the right to access all keys and all configuration functions
of the terminal

You are now able to test all system functions.

Your system is now ready to receive data from your PC application.

6. Emergency Unlock of proxCylinders

If normal operation failed (e.g. the processor does not work) to get the keyTags out, there
is a possibility of unlocking each single proxCylinder by hand for manual keyTag release.
In this case the service door of the flexx has to be opened first (see 3.2 Open flexx). Each
single proxCylinder is equipped with a little metal lever on its own, which can easily be
reached from the inside. Now this lever has to be pressed down to unlock the proxCylinder
and then release the keyTag.
Press down the lever of the proxCylinder by
hand for manual keyTag release.
