INTRODUCTION
Air Conditioning is a system used to cool down the temperature of a space by removing the existing heat and moisture from the
room.
In a nutshell, they work by taking warm air into a system and dispersing cold air. This means that they require some input of work
to operate.

Step 1 – A cold liquid refrigerant absorbs heat from the space

into the evaporator, cooling the room down.
Step 2 – The refrigerant then changes phase to a gas, and is put
through a compressor to increase its temperature.
Step 3 – The refrigerant then passes through the condenser
coils, transferring heat from the refrigerant to the
outside air.
Step 4 – Refrigerant expands in order to decrease its
pressure and cool down to below the room’s
Air Conditioners work similar to heat pumps,
temperature to repeat the cycle again. but follow a cooling cycle.
TYPES OF AIR CONDITIONING
A. Wall Mounted, Split Unit Air Conditioning System
Commonly known as Split AC, this system is named so because it consists of both an outside and an inside unit. The outside unit is
installed on or near the exterior wall of the space to be cooled, and comprises the compressor, condenser oil and expansion oil.
The indoor unit sits on the wall and contains the cooling oil and an air filter.
Both units are connected with wires and tubing.
Split ACs are very quiet as the compressor and fan are located on the outside unit.
The maximum cooling capacity is up to 5 tons and are commonly placed in residences.

B. Window Air Conditioner
These air conditioners are installed at a window and are used to cool a single room or space. A window air conditioning system is a
standalone, self-contained unit, where all of the components sit inside a single box.
This system is compact, and is installed along the lower half of the window and pull hot air from the room and push it outside,
blowing cold air into the space to cool it down.
The maximum cooling capacity is up to 5 tons and are the cheaper,
more energy consuming alternative to split ACs, used in residences.

C. Packaged Air Conditioner
In Packaged air conditioners all the important components of the air conditioners are enclosed in a single casing like Window AC.
Thus, the compressor, cooling coil, air handling unit and the air filter are all housed in a single casing and assembled at the factory.
They work by installing the single component and connecting the system to ducts laid throughout various rooms. By using
electricity as its power source, the unit circulates the refrigerant through the coils.
The cooling capacity lies from 5 to 15 tons, and are commonly used in
Restaurants, small halls, telephone exchanges, large residences, etc.

D. Central Air Conditioner
Central AC is a system in which air is cooled at a central location and distributed to and from rooms by one or more fans and
ductwork. The system works from a cooling compressor, which is located outside.
Much like other air conditioners, a coil filled with refrigerant is used to cool the air, which is then blown out by a fan and circulated
throughout the building with the use of ducts located on the walls or floors.
If there is warm air in a room, the ducts will register the heat and the air will then be transported back to the air conditioner to be
pushed outside.

FACTORS FOR CHOOSING A SUITABLE SYSTEM
Capacity
The size of the space to be cooled and the limit of cooling determines the size and type of the AC be installed. The right size and
type of AC is important to determine to preserve and maintain the device for a longer lifespan, and hence, a better investment.
For Example, for Residences and Clinics, Window ACs are the cheaper option in place of the much quieter Split ACs.
Consequently, the cooling capacity of a Split AC is preferred in larger rooms.
For larger residences and smaller institutional and commercial spaces, Packaged AC is the most efficient option.
For shopping malls, central libraries, etc., Central AC is the best option.

Energy Efficiency
The Energy Efficiency standardizes star-rated energy efficiency ratings. We must make sure to buy Air Conditioners with a rating of
3 star and above. This is important to determine to lower energy bills, using less power and hence cost-saving.

Air Quality
Indoor air quality is achieved by installing an AC with a good filter, and cleaning the filters regularly, preferably once in two
months. These air filters remove dirt, germs, smoke as well as odour
