Chem 112B

Preparation for Lecture on Jan 27.

The first part of Chapter 14 Dienes, is based on reactions you saw in Chem 112A. It will help
understand the new material if you review some of the concepts and reactions that you already saw in
112A.

Review these sections in McMurry:

Sec 7.7 to 7.10; 11.5

Know the significance of these terms/phrases:

Electrophilic addition
Cation classification and stabilities
Regiochemistry of reactions
Markovnikov addition

What is an allylic cation and why is it stable when compared to non-allylic cations?
Resonance forms of allylic cations

Complete the following reactions by showing the electron-flow and final product:

HBr HCl
? ?
ether CH2Cl2

Which structures have resonance forms (“RF”)? Draw all possible RF’s.
(review what is and what isn”t a resonance form)

H 2C

If I modify the structures, show all the RF’s that are possible

H 2C

During the semester, I will post chapter readings and sample problems from the material we will cover
in the next week. Read and work the problems so you will be prepared before each lecture!
To prepare for the following week, I will post a reading assignment with questions on Friday or
Saturday. Look in Canvas Files for a folder called “Weekly Readings and Problems”. From time to time,
I will also post “mini-reviews” of important topics from 112A.
