Directions: Use the articles posted to Bb, video clips, and Cradle of Shame website to identify:
(1) the priority population in SC
(2) determinants (i.e., risk factors, risk conditions, factors that influence health, barriers) of infant mortality
(3) public health approaches/prevention strategies to address each determinant
(4) brief explanation of the public health approaches/prevention strategies
Hint: Determinants may be addressed by multiple prevention approaches. For example, telemedicine and positioning health clinics
along bus routes are strategies to address the barrier of lack of transportation. Public health approaches/prevention strategies may
address multiple determinants. For example, Nurse Family Partnership addresses lack of access to prenatal care, lack of
transportation, and lack of social support.
This is a study tool for you for the upcoming exam. You will not be submitting this activity for course credit.
There are MANY (20+) determinants/approaches described in the documents posted to Bb. You need to be familiar with enough
information to discuss the concept of infant mortality.
Who is the priority
population in SC? individuals living in poverty
Determinant Public health Description of the approach/strategy

Examples:
Lack of access to breast milk Mother’s Milk Bank of SC Severely premature babies are more likely to die if they are
given infant formula instead of breast milk.
MUSC launched nonprofit milk bank to ensure that
premature infants in neonatal intensive care units at the
state’s major medical centers have access to a reliable supply
of human breast milk at a lower cost.
Lack of transportation Telemedicine SC’s telemedicine network connects medical specialists and
doctors with patients in rural and underserved areas.
Unintended pregnancy Increase access to contraception Poor women are more likely to experience an unintended
pregnancy. Medicaid, Title X, and other federal and
government programs are critical sources of funding for
access to contraception.
